I had read a number of reviews before going there. Consequently, I went there with very few expectations. It would have been easy for them to make me pleasantly surprised.

The great: The "sister" resort, Villa del Arco, is located two buildings over and is extremely easy to get to. It is much more lovely. The Villa del Palmar "spa" makes reservations for you at the Villa del Arco's "Desert Spa". This spa is as good as you can expect from any normal spa facility. Hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, plunge showers, and massages. It is beautiful and well done.

The good: The room was clean and reasonably well taken care of. The cleaning lady did a quality job. This completely exceeded all the reviews I had read. Finding the right wall switches and learning how to find the circuit breakers for the kitchen stuff took a bit of time.

The indifferent: The bar staff, although slow, did somewhat well. The quality of the drinks varied by bartender and by order. Most drinks were drinkable, some were either too watery or too strong. The bell boy did a decent job of taking our bags to our room. The same cannot be said for getting help when we were leaving. We had to take our bags to van ourselves.

The bad: The pool looked horrid. It looked like too many people had scummed it up for years without a proper scrubbing. The restaurant food was pretty bad, unless you like your glazed carrots to be boiled for weeks and your shrimp to be overcooked to rubber. The nightly shows were the same half dozen staff members doing similar dances every night (with different costumes to imply the theme for the night).

Specific experiences of note:

We agreed to attend the timeshare 60-90 sales pitch, knowing that they always take 2+ hours. It took 2+ hours. They offered us a free breakfast with the sales pitch. When we were finished with the breakfast portion, the sales person asked us to leave a tip for the breakfast.

When we got ready to check out, we noticed a $3.68 "optional" tip charge added for every day of our stay. When asked, the manager explained that it is to "simplify" the tipping process. It would have been nice if we were told about it at any point in the process instead of discovering it for ourselves.

We considered playing miniature golf, but decided to not pay the (non-refundable) $5 fee per person. Later that day, we noticed that the golf course was more like a practice putting green with lots of holes, instead of a normal mini golf course.

Express checkout requires going to the checkout desk and stand in the same line as the regular checkout people. The difference is you fill out a piece of paper beforehand if you are using "express". The non-express checkout does not require the form.

Recommendations:

Go elsewhere. If you choose to go to this hotel/timeshare, be prepared. Do not take the $65/$83 per day per person "all-inclusive" meal plan. Each receipt at the end of each meal includes a line for a tip (sigh). Better food can be found a bus ride away at Wal*Mart. A week's worth of food for two can be purchased there for the same price as one day's "all-inclusive" for the same two people. We paid $1.40 for the very quick bus ride, $150 for a week's worth of food and alcohol for two, and $7 for a taxi back. We even had enough money to tip the taxi driver a couple dollars and save a little more than $5 over the hotels meal plan.

Speaking of which, it is easy to get a taxi from the front of the hotel. The taxi ride to Wal*Mart is $7. The bus is 70 cents per person. You may want to take a taxi back from there if you have food that needs to remain cold, since the return bus trip is by way of the entire city.

The demand for tips was pretty bad. The only thing worse than it was the predatory techniques used to get us to take a timeshare tour, even after we had done so. As we were walking between the hotel and the front gate, we discovered they have someone "stationed" along the road to grab us. This is in addition to the various attempts at the front desk, the bell hop, near the on-site stores, near the pool, etc.

“Don't Do It!”

First of all, Cabo is time share hell. I had been there a couple of years ago with a friend who owned a place at the Pueblo Bonito Rose. It was very nice. I was hopeful that this place would be a similar experience. Sadly, it was not.

The room was okay for a 3 star resort. The maid service was very nice. That being said:
- the restaurant food was disappointing
- the service was terrible
- the shows were pathetic
- the pool is DISGUSTING!

Shall I go on?

Don't do the food plan. It isn't worth it. Instead, take the bus to Walmart and go grocery shopping (they even have organic items.)

Oh... and watch for mystery charges. We found a $3.50 daily charge on our bill. This is their automatic tipping plan. We had been tipping the maid, but other than that we didn't use their amenities. So it wasn't the tipping we had a problem with, it was the fact that they didn't tell us about this "convenience" and that you have to sign a form if you choose not to participate.

Do yourself a favor and don't stay here.

We did manage to have a wonderful time. We went diving, pool hopped to check out the other resorts, and played downtown.

We are so glad to be home.

This was our second time to Cabo. First time we stayed at the Westin (Awesome). We needed to use our timeshare so decided to give this resort a try even after reading many bad reviews of the resort. I warn you in advance that if you go through Intervale, be prepared to get a horrible room. Unless you are an owner there, they put you in the worst room. HOWEVER, do complain because they upgraded us to a beautiful studio overlooking the sea of cortez that was breathtaking and at no charge. The staff at the front desk was more than accommodating. The resort is older than the Arco which is next door. But there is plenty to do. We didnt eat there except for lunch which was great. Always a chair at the pool and the beach. Lots of activities all day around the pool. The entire staff is pleasant. If you sit on the beach, be prepared to be hounded by the locals to buy items. Just ignore them, and they will go away. Go to walmart down the street instead of the market which is over priced on the facility. If you are single or a couple, go to the Melia at Nikki Beach for the day. Lots going on there. The entire trip was sooo wonderful that we purchased another timeshare at the Arco. Great restaurants i.e. Puerta de Vieja, Pitahayas at the Sheraton, Ediths, Ruth Chris' to name a few. A bit pricey, but hey you are on vacation. The resort is extremely clean, maid service is excellent and so I'd give this resort a try. If i had to pick out one thing i didn't like, it was the beach chairs. They are plastic and after a few hours become uncomfortable. BUT GO FOR IT!!!!

“Not Happy With Room”

Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa Los Cabos

I stayed at Villa Del Palmar June 15th to June 20th. Externally the hotel is very nice, the staff was great, the Ocean beautiful, Restaurants on the property was ok but very very pricy. Gym was ok, had lots of weight machines, room with treadmills are very small but acceptable. Grocery store very expensive.Taxi's are very expensive so if you plan on leaving the resort daily it's best to rent a car, negotiate, you should not pay anymore than $120 for a week, when you try to rent a car you must negotiate as we started at $300 and end up paying $90 for 5 days. San Jose Carbo, very expensive, Cabo San Lucas is cheaper but the hotel tells you that San Jose is cheaper and it's $60 round trip on a taxi to get there, public bus is $6.00 round trip.

Iron Board- it's a table top iron board. Come on, iron boards are cheap.
I heard other people complaining. I cannot believe I exchanged my resort for this piece of crap.

Stove- table top stove, 2 burners, it's placed against the kitchen
wall which in my opinion is not safe and it looks like crap.

Microwave- so small you can't even fit a regular plate.

No washing machine or dryer, no dishwasher.

Bedroom- light from the hallway constantly reflects in our bedroom 100% of the time.

Plumbing- When the guests above are taking a shower or using the toilet, it flushes through the pipes and gives a huge sound that wakes us up each morning. This was really annoying.

The noise in the resort is absurd, no matter where you are located, the noise from the pool area is so loud it carries throughout the resort. Pool is not that big.

They lied to us about the gym and having to pay $8.00 if we did not listen to their time share.

While all this might be ok to some folks it's really not to most of
the people I met there. They also complained about Interval.

When you invest $28,000 in a time share and you exchange, you expect at least to receive certain basics. It never existed here. If they had nicer rooms then we were never told. This resort is for young college folks who are looking to have a party time no matter where it is, as long as they have a bed to sleep and the beach. I'm sure they will be disappointed once they get to the beach to see that the tides are too high 90% of the time to swim. Absolutely no one gets in the water at that resort because of this.

We purchased a time share at the Grand Mayan in San Jose, absolutely fabulous and the ambiance is breath taking.

“Theft. Bad Management. And not so All-Inclusive.”

Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa Los Cabos

Jun 19, 2008

We stayed at the Villa Del Palmar in Cabo and were completely let down. Not really all inclusive. The wait staff would give you this dirty look if you did not tip them. Not only that, but on the first day we were there, they stole all of our cameras from our room. We filled out a security report, and they even checked the key card system at the door. They told us that "only two people were in and out of your room while you were gone, and we interviewed both of them, and they said they did not take anything." Imagine that. The employee did not say they stole a camera bag from inside our room while they were there cleaning or stocking the fridge? Strange.

The hotel room was nasty. Dirty bathrooms, broken coffee table, gross drop panels different colors from stains, tv was worthless, pool was cold....

The all inclusive basically gave us the two beach restaurants, and the deli. Food was ok, and way more over priced than I would have paid for them on the menu. The deli was good.

It was very odd that you could not have anything from inside your room with out a charge. $4 for a small bag of chips $5 beer in your fridge?

Just so you know... they are going to steal from you and you will be let down. This resort is more like a two star than a five star. The other resorts are great. Stay at ARCO that is brand new really clean.
