Where do we start? Fawlty towers is still alive and well in Torquay. On check in nothing went well - no porters to help with luggage, rooms not ready and had to chase them to chase housekeeping. Two of the rooms were sad and tired looking with the cot allocated in the wrong room. The other room we had was quite nice, but although the soft furnishings had been re-freshed in the re-furb most of the furnature was tired and tatty. In our room there was dust a plenty in all the corners and the bath was full of black spots where the enamel had erroded. When booking we had not been informed of the refurbishment taking place which regularly closed the only staircase and the one lift only has space for five - not funny when the conference broke for meals etc..
Breakfasts - the food quailty was good however, only one member of staff seemed to give a toss and always had to ask for tea, toast, coffe etc and it was always pot luck if it actually ever arrived. Drinks in the bar was just as hap-hazard with tables not being cleared for over an hour after people had left and empty glasses left on our table all evening - we had a collection!
Eating in the bar area was not worth the hassle. We ordered seven meals - five arrived after 50 mins, 1 was cold, the other two - one was a panini and we were told after a 50 min wait that the machine had broken! The other was a salad which eventually arrived after 1 hour and 20 mins and the side order of bread never materialised.
Huge amount of noise from unruly guests on two occasions - it was like being on a club 18-30 holiday.
General apathy rife amoungst the hotel staff towards guests - definately not 4* service.
And on check out they couldn't produce a proper bill as the computer wasn't working and couldn't take payment as the PDQ was down.
Such a shame as this does have the potential to be a truly grand hotel but suffers from a lack of interest and attention to detail from those employed there. That said, one of the duty managers did try his best to redeem things but I sense he may be fighting a loosing battle!
We didn't actually see Basil - but I'm sure they were working from his "how to run a hotel" guide, and I'm also sure I spotted Manuel in corridors late at night!!
