“AWAY FROM THE BELLS”

Grapevine Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Ludlow, United Kingdom
Apr 9, 2008

Having been to Stow in the past I was aware of the problem with the church bells at night and therefore chose the Grapevine, close but not that close.
I suspect I would have been happier with the BELLS !!!
Whilst my wife and I had ann "Executive" room, I suspect that if I had had to work in it my job would have benn somewaht harder, No near plugs to the workdesk, grovel on floor behind other furniture to succeed there.
Small portable television in the room with only four terrestial channels ably complemented the cracked basin and poorly repaired top in the bathroom. A plug in the sink would have been handy.
The general feel of the place gave an impression of being undermanaged, tired arround the edges, dirty in others and with a small compliment of staff either having language difficulties or disinterested.
The food was certainly uninteresting and possibly worse, no rosettes here I am afraid.
The portal between the kitchen and dining room was "filthy" with chipped and cracked paintwork to accentuate it.
A nice touch were the numerous sand filled galvanised buckets dotted arround the place for cigarette butts, most likely those of the staff??
On a plus the bed was large and comfortable and the free wireless internet connection worked well.
Overall most dissapointing.

“Fantastic food but....”

Grapevine Hotel

Feb 12, 2008

Overall, we had a really good stay at this hotel.
The food in the restaurant was excellent- we really enjoyed all of our evening meals and the staff were attentive and friendly.
Breakfast was fantastic. We can't remember a cooked breakfast more nicely done.

However....we booked Room 11because it looked so attractive in the picture on the hotel website. What a disappointment! It was dated and faded with ugly old furniture and stained carpets. There was peeling ceiling paper in the bathroom (which wasn't too comfortable anyway) and plenty of cobwebs in the corners. An unsightly old trouser press in the wrong place finished the picture! Not good enough by any standards and certainly not for the money being asked!

We quickly complained and the staff were willing to move us to a much nicer and very comfortable room at the rear of the hotel.
Ultimately, our stay was great - but be warned about that room!

Downstairs areas cramped and not very comfortable and reception staff vaguely friendly.

“Charming if heating worked!”

Charming hotel, lovely rooms and restaurant breakfast, plenty of off-street parking. But we could not get the heating to work in our room and the shower took at least 10 minutes to heat up.

“Great food and service at the Grapevine this Christmas”

Grapevine Hotel

Jan 2, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

My wife and I stayed here for the 3 night Christmas package with 2 friends and had a wonderful time.

All the staff were friendly and the food was excellent throughout.
Everything was obviously freshly cooked and there was no problem with special requests.

Our room (room 1) was quite small but very comfortable, it had a well equipped bathroom and wonderful fluffy towels.

Only a few minor niggles:
- The TV in our room was old and with poor reception.
- The hotel was too warm particularly in our room and the bar.
- The lounge and bar areas are too small if the hotel is busy.

All in all though a good Christmas at the Grapevine and we would certainly recommend it.

“Wonderful stay over Christmas”

Grapevine Hotel

Dec 31, 2007

We had a wonderful 4 day stay at centrally located The Grapevine Hotel over Christmas. We had been apprehensive as the reviews here are quite mixed but we need not have worried.

We were in Stow on the Wold to visit family who had rented a cottage for Christmas and although we had to buy into the entire Grapevine Christmas package (dinner on Christmas Eve, Christmas lunch etc etc) the only meal we had at the hotel was breakfast (which was excellent). This did no detract from our enjoyment at all.

The Grapevine was tastefully decorated for Christmas which gave the public spaces a nice festive feel - the lounge, bar, restaurant.

We were in Room 11, a good sized room with king sized, comfy bed on the first floor at the front of the hotel. The room was well furnished with two comfy chairs, television, wardrobe, chest of drawers and desk - and if it had one problem it was too warm something I never normally complain about. Tea making facilities were provided as well as a small bottle of mineral water each side of the bed every day. Housekeeping was efficicent, even on Christmas Day.

The bathroom with its wooden floor had a large rain shower over the bath, all the toiletries you could want (no need to bring your own) and plenty of soft, fluffy white towels. A bathroom to enjoy a long soak, which I did many times.

All in all a first class stay - and the proof of the pudding is that we would happily go back.

The only downside to the hotel is that it is pet friendly - for me this meant too many dogs (some were enormous) lying around the hotel bar and staying in the rooms - fortunately not near us.
