“Nothing special, but adequate”

Ibis Hull

3 of 5 stars
London, United Kingdom
May 13, 2007

I've stayed here several times over the last 9 months, 2 or 3 (weekday) nights at a time. Yes, it is in the red light district, and consequently un-accompanied females may feel uncomfortable in the environs of the hotel, however for me (a male business traveller) its location close to the station and the town centre together with a reasonable price makes it a no-brainer choice.

Some of the rooms are now starting to show signs of wear, but I’ve always found them clean and well presented. The decent sized desk with a bright light above makes it a good hotel to work in of an evening. The powerful showers are a real bonus. The continental breakfast is reasonable value for money with a decent choice. My experiences in the restaurant of an evening are rather less positive with poor service, poor value for money, and until the recently introduced new menu, poor choice. In any case there are a number of places to eat close by, with a J.D. Wetherspoon just a block away.

The 23p a minute charge for 0845 telephone numbers, makes using the internet in the hotel a bit pricey. The rooms have a combined air conditioning / heating unit but the summer / winter mode appears to be set remotely, and consequently in Hull’s changeable weather occasionally you want heat when the unit is set to deliver cooling. The major drawback to the hotel, is however, the lack of on site parking provision for customers.

“Ibiz - mal”

I have just come back from visiting my sick mum in Hull and chose last minute to stay in the Ibiz Hotel because of its proximity to the railway station which is good. I found the staff eager to help when they had stopped chatting among themselves and on 3 occasions i just walked away through waiting for them to help me.
When i booked my room she treid to overcharge me, then she gave me the room key and sent me on my way with only as much as a thankyou. I had no idea about any facilities and was hungry for a snack.. I hoped there would be some literature in the room about the restaurant which bosted 24 hour snacks. There was no literature ( I later found it pinned up in the lift).
The shower doors were grimey and covered in limescale. The walls had splashes of i dont know what all over them and the even though i had ordered a non smoking room there were cigerette burns on both the tables.
I have attached photos of these burns and the dirt. I didnt want to sleep in the hotel after that but i had to so i stayed out late and went out early. I hated it and i have been to some bad Hotels. This is truely the worst hotel i have been to and would compare it to a brothel in Thailand. Dont let the photos fool you. It is in a redlight district.

“Actually, pretty good”

Ibis Hull

Hull doesn't have the best reputation in the UK, or Europe for that matter, but this hotel went a long way to making up for that. Entrance is on the busy Ferensway, but very reachable by car or by rail. In fact, the Humberside Airport bus stops at Anne Street, just behind the hotel. The Princes Quay shopping mall, city centre and Marina area are all within 5 minutes walk.

No thrills Ibis, but very clean, a fantastic and peaceful night's sleep and the staff were both courteous and extremely helpful. If you need to stay over for a night, then this is the one to choose.

“I would not like to stay there again on my own!”

Room clean, and serviced well each day.

Shower spacious and powerful.

Each room had one small window . My room was at the back and appeared a little dark, perhaps because it overlooked a brick wall, and the dustbins, etc.

Reception and eating area were smokey upon arrival.

Some of the staff appeared bored and not particuarly helpful.

The hotel is not in a very good area of the city. Even though it is very handy for walking into the centre - it is in the red light district, and therefore not safe to wander around at night.

As a lone female traveller working in the city, I stressed upon booking that it was of paramount importance that I had on-site parking - which I was told was not a problem. Yet upon arrival, I was told that I had to park in a multi storey car park down the road (in the prostitute area). After much upset I was eventually told I could park in the staff car park, but I wasn`t guaranteed a place. I therefore had the worry each night of whether I would be able to get parked or not.

O.K. for male travellers, or accompanied female travellers.

Overpriced in my opinion.

“Fine for what it is”

First stay in an Ibis, nothing noteworthy good or bad. Comfy enough bed, but thin matress. Strong shower in a clean bathroom. No parking on-site, 500m to nearby shopping centre car park and costs c. £3 over night. No bathroom toiletries but comfy towels.
