“Friendly and comfortable”

My partner and I stayed at Bloomfield House at the end of April for a weekend away, having read previous comments on Trip Advisor from both former guests and the owner herself, and we really enjoyed it.

Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and informally by the owners, provided with maps of the area and recommendations for pubs and restaurants and asked what time we would like breakfast. Here I fully agree with the owner's previous Trip Advisor comments that on a weekend break not everyone wants to be up and about early in the morning. We were keen to have at least something of a lie-in and I suspect this suited the owners well, although I don't doubt that had we wanted to be up early they would have been equally as accommodating. Whatever time you do have it, the breakfast is lovely and cooked to order.

Our room was large, had a 4 poster bed and was clean and comfortable, with lovely views.

Throughout our stay we were made to feel extremely welcome and we really appreciated the informal, friendly atmosphere.

“Not obviously eco”

It's good to stay at a place where the owners are trying to provide an eco/sustainable environment. However there was little evidence of this -- we weren't shown any composting or recycling facilities on site or any info about energy sources; bedroom biscuits were organic but in little plastic packets. The decor in the smallish room was somewhat oppressive and eclectic and the spotlight bedroom lighting shone into the eyes (difficult for people with migraine). There was no info of the kind common to basic hotels e.g. how to use the telephone to get an outside line. The location was about a 20 minute not very pleasant walk from the city centre (we took a taxi back after dark). The owners were charming when they were around, but at least on the night we stayed didn't give us the impression of being really into their guesthouse business or present for their guests. Certainly a reasonable place for a short stay, perhaps improves over time to get to know the family, but not ideal for a relaxing or romantic short break.

Hi, Once again I feel the need to respond, mainly because people do not talk face to face if they don't like/understand anything. I just wanted to say that, we do have a composting bin in the corner of the garden, and we do recycle your waste for you, we don't ask you to do it as you are away having a break! Recycling should be part of all our lives, I hardly think I have to show you the bins to prove it. Of course the biscuits are wrapped. They have to be otherwise they simply go stale. It takes much more clingfilm to cover a plate and it just doesnt' work well enough, I know, I have tried!

The telephone instructions, should be in your room, I will now go searching and replacing.

And finally, I am almost always here for my guests in the evening. Early August happenes to be our Wedding Anniversary (22 years if you're asking) and I took my husband out to dinner!

I know I can't be all things to all people, but I try my best.
Karen.

“Disappointing and expensive”

I felt that Bloomfield House fell short of the images/information on its own website. We were the only guests on our first night and there was barely enough car parking. Our registration slip was left lying on the hall table until I retrieved it - I would prefer that my personal details were looked after more carefully (later int he week I saw another registration slip also left lying around). As part of the arrival process the owner strongly dissuaded us from coming down to breakfast before 9am and said that if we did she would not be around! The room was only adequate - no shower screen or curtain, hospitality tray partially filled (no milk, biscuits), clock didn't work. There was nowhere to hang damp towels so they had to be replaced every day - odd for an 'eco-hotel'. Halve the price, call it a B&B and Bloomfield House is fine!

I was really upset to hear that this couple were not happy with their stay with us. They made no reference to it at the time which gave us no chance to address any of their issues. Needless to say I have taken on board all their comments and we have changed the things I can. I now remove all registration forms immediately (good point) and have replaced the battery in the clock (it had been 'borrowed' by another guest.

However I would like to say that they just misunderstood me over breakfast. When you arrive I usually ask what time you would like breakfast and if you say 9 - 9.30 then I say, fine, but don't worry if you sleep (and lots of people do) well you can come down any time after 9, even if it is 11 I'm happy, after all you are here to relax. If you want breakfast at 7 that's also fine, but I can't just sit in the kitchen and wait from 6 just in case - can I?
Anyway, if you want perfection, don't come here. We are relaxed, friendly and flexible. I wash clothes for guests who are travelling for a long time, I have sewn up grooms trousers on the morning of his wedding and if there is no chance of a taxi in time for your reservation - yes we will run you down into town.
Finally, if anyone thinks we could run a Georgian house like this on half the rates then sorry think again. If we were wealthy and this was just pocket money then maybe, but life's not as simple as that. Rant over. If you are in any doubt then choose somewhere else, but rest assured we do have many happy customers.
Yours Karen.

“Loads of Character”

We really liked this place, we found the owners to be incredibly friendly and helpful (directing us from the city centre when we got lost in the very confusing one way system of Bath was a godsend!) The house is a beautiful Georgian building with loads of original features, it is a bit rough around the ages, but that makes it all the more charming! The breakfast has to be noted, which was delicious - it's not often that you can look out of the window and see the farm that the bacon you are eating has come from. Over all a very down to earth, pleasant place to stay.

“Rather disappointed”

Bloomfield House

We were looking for a romantic, quiet place to stay for a special occasion. Unfortunately, Bloomfield house did not live up to those expectations.

Whilst the owners/managers were nice they fell well short of creating a boutique style environment or indeed a simple quiet retreat. (For those that only want to have stayed in an historic building then this is for you.)

We didn't mind the cats and dog in the accommodation however we did not expect the dog to be running around the kitchen whilst breakfast was being cooked.

The sunday evening that we had put aside to relax in our room was rather spoilt by a stereo being played by one of the family with pop/dance music (going from 7.30 to about 9.30pm) and children shouting down to their parents (the owners).

Another very small thing but one which adds up, is that breakfast was not laid out at the pre-agreed time, as the owner had overslept.

All in all it didn't seem very well run. With the noise and proximity to animals and the family it felt like much more of a homestay.

Besides Blomfield house, Bath is a fantastic place to visit and stay. We would recommend Bath and it's attractions to anyone.
