“Delightful residence from which to explore Bath”

Eagle House

Jul 15, 2008

This wonderful house proved the perfect place for a weekend retreat for 13 friends from which we walked the picturesque canal into Bath (20 minutes) and enjoyed the atmosphere and food in local pubs. John & Rosie Napier were the perfect hosts, they gave us the run of the house day and night yet were always on hand to offer assistance and local advice when needed. The rooms were clean, homely and comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious. During our stay we were not lucky with the weather but Eagle House offered the perfect location to relax with the papers, a glass or two of wine and a catch up with good friends in a home that could be a film set from a period drama. We look forward to returning and highly recommend Eagle House to anyone visiting the Bath area.

My husband and two teenage daughters (ages 16 and 13) stayed here for two nights in late June. John and Rosie could not have been kinder, with tips for getting in and out of Bath (we drove and it was very easy) and recommendations for meals at nearby pubs (one of which, The Long Arms, served one of the best meals I have had in a long time). Our daughters loved the old house and felt quite at home immediately. They especially enjoyed breakfast in the lovely breakfast room and were loathe to leave because John was just getting the tennis court up and running! I think we will have to return just to stay there for longer and enjoy the Somerset experience. Tubs/showers, etc. performed perfectly and beds were comfortable with crisp cotton sheets and beautiful quilted bedspreads. Our room was a family room with two twin beds in it for our daughters which worked out perfectly for us and saved us a little bit by not having to have two rooms. Would happily recommend Eagle House to anyone.

“Lovely Georgian Manor”

Our family of four stayed two nights at this manor tucked in the hillside village of Bathford on the outskirts of Bath. While portions of the house seem a bit worn around the edges, our spacious ensuite family room had a fabulous view and the equally large bathroom appeared to be recently remodeled. The remainder of the house was charmingly cluttered with the most interesting objects as if it belonged to an English country gentlemen who was an avid collector of curiosities. It felt like we were visiting our rich, eccentric old uncle for the weekend.

The hosts were gracious and professional, but unobtrusive. Despite the presence of other guests, we had a sense of quiet privacy and seclusion. Bathford is just a short bus ride away from Bath, yet removed from the traffic, noise and tourists. We enjoyed dinner on both evenings at the Crown Pub just down the hill from the Eagle, but it is a slightly steep walk back up.

The cat, dog and rabbit do add a friendly family touch and my kids loved the open terraced lawn, tree swing and trampoline hidden in the lower garden. My husband and I had the large, eclectic drawing room to ourselves one evening and enjoyed the view from the floor-to-ceiling picture windows over a glass of wine with classical music playing in the background.

If you like history, it is worth reading the collection of articles about the property available in the drawing room. The manor was built by one of the famed Bath architects using the same Cotswold stone. The beauty of its architecture, however, can only be appreciated by going round for a front view from the lawn as the entrance is configured at the back of the house by the road to allow the house to face the best view downhill.

“The Eagle has Landed!”

Well as you can see this review is long overdue! But I figured better late than never, seeing as it is Summer in Bathford and people will be looking for a great place to stay...

Make no mistake, Eagle House is wonderful and amongst the best experiences of our time in the UK and Europe.

My wife and I wanted to see Bath but we made the decision to stay in Bathford to avoid the crowds. This turned out to be a great idea as Bathford was so charming and the walk to Bath was just beautiful. Of course after a big day in Bath we cheated and caught the bus home.

John and Rosie and family were friendly and welcoming and made us feel like old friends. John was kind enough to let me play with the kids Lego and build a spaceship (named "The Eagle", naturally!) and he even put it up on a shelf as a display piece. Now that's what I call service!

Of course I musn't forget to mention Aquila the Dog and the Largest Rabbit I have ever seen - all part of the charm of Eagle House.

We were incredibly lucky as July 2007 was when most of England flooded, but we somehow travelled one or two days ahead of the storms, meaning we had glorious sunny days in Bath/Bathford. We even managed a bit of leisurely tennis on the backyard tennis court. Brilliant.

Rooms were charmingly quaint and well appointed, breakfast was excellent, the house is magnificent. But the real attraction is the owners - lovely genuine people who excel at making you feel welcome.

I cannot recommend Eagle House highly enough. Writing this makes me jealous of all of you who will get to stay there this summer!

John and Rosie, we promise we will be back one day, so you can meet our daughter Ruby!

(More photos to come!)

My fiance and I stayed at Eagle house for a surprise romantic long weekend.
On contacting the owner John he was very helpful and due to the late availability even discounted the rooms he offered.
We were given the choice of a room in the house, a suite or a garden room in the walled cottage.
The room we took was in the garden cottage. On arrival the house is spectacular to say the least! An amazing Georgian mansion with terraced gardens complete with tennis lawn.
As the owners were on holiday the lady looking after the house showed us to our room along a beautiful path into a private secret walled garden. It was so romantic and the suite next door was unoccupied so it felt even more private and special.
The rooms are exceptionaly clean and although probably not upto hotel standards in some ways nicer as you can tell how much effort goes into the upkeep of this unique place. My only negative and disappointment was that the double bed was infact two single pushed together and not fixed together which was less than ideal.
The breakfast is lovely and the option squeeze your own orange juice is a nice twist too.
Eagle house is a special find and we will certainly use it again. Its loaction is 2.7 miles into the city and just off the M5....ideal.
The people enrolled to help out were all very nice and friendly and the lady in overall charge was very helpful, not least when my fiance left her mobile phone in the room when we left. She was kind enough to post it and just used my credit card for the postage.
Well done Eagle House you are possibly one of the nicest places I/we've stayed.
