“Struan Bed And Breakfast - St. Andrews - Wonderful!”

Struan Bed & Breakfast

5 of 5 stars
Brighton, MI
May 7, 2008

The Struan Bed and Breakfast in St. Andrews is absolutely the BEST!

We stayed here in April 2008 and were absolutely thrilled. We were greeted warmly upon arrival by Coral Napier, the owner, and our entire visit was wonderful.

Struan's accomodations are excellent. The Bed and Breakfast is immaculate and very tastefully decorated.

The suite contains your very own large living room, including a fireplace, sofa, chair, coffee table, end tables, and a round dining table in front of a large bay window overlooking the front garden.

The bedroom also was a very nice size and included a very comfortable king size bed (which could be made into two twins). There is a large chest of drawers, two smaller chests on either side of the bed, and a large armoire to store hanging clothes. Again, there is a beautiful fireplace in the bedroom. On the mantel, a crystal container awaits you with Scotland's famous whiskey. The bedroom overlooks a beautiful, private garden in the back, which you can access through the french doors.

The bathroom is completely updated and included a large shower (plenty of hot water!), sink, toilet, and large heated towel rack. A window provides plenty of sunlight. The bathroom is only for your use and is large.

Another of our favorite parts of Struan were the breakfasts! Delicious does not begin to describe them. The food was expertly prepared and there was so much we should not have eaten anything for the rest of the day! An assortment of fresh fruits, juices, coffee/tea, muesli, cereals, croissants, breads, toasts, yogurts, jams, jellies, honey arrived, only to be followed by a traditional Scottish hot breakfast or eggs cooked to order with bacon and sausages. Coral will gladly work with your schedule and prepare it fresh for the time that works for you.

Speaking of food, Coral also leaves the best desserts and cookies with an assortment of teas in your living room. You have your own pot to brew the hot water in, and she leaves fresh milk and water bottles in your own private refrigerator located in a storage closet in your suite.

Coral and her husband, Norman, strive to make your stay memorable and enjoyable. Norman even took my husband to the golf course early one morning so I could sleep in! They are both a wealth of information, and have a whole drawer full of brochures and pamphlets about the area. I asked so many questions but both were very gracious and so willing to help! And they have everything you would need - hairdryer, iron, ironing board, toiletries, alarm clock, phone....My husband required band-aids for his blisters from new golf shoes - and Coral came to the rescue! And when we were pressed for time to get to a local distillery tour after his golfing, Coral had prepared an elaborate lunch so we could make the deadline for the tour and eat in the car!

Another aspect we loved about Struan was the location. Just a little outside of town, Struan was a nice retreat to return to after a busy day and night. It is nestled in a cozy, safe neighborhood but just a few minutes to the city center. I did notice a lot of B and B's in town, but I also noticed that parking seemed to be at a premium. Coral and Norman reserve the driveway for you, so there was never a problem finding a parking space as I thought there might be had we stayed in the city center. There was also plenty of street parking in front of the house at all times when friends came to visit us.

Wireless internet is also available, which is a plus!

My advice when visiting St. Andrews - stay at Struan! You will love it! We have stayed in many fine resorts and hotels across the world, and Struan is at the top of our list!

“5 -star "Struan"”

Struan Bed & Breakfast

5 of 5 stars
Ashbourne Derbyshire
Apr 3, 2008

Having just spent 2 nights with my Mum in this delightful bed and breakfast I felt I had to let other travellers to St.Andrews in on the secret of the "Struan" experience.
We couldn't have asked for anything better-
A warm welcome from Coral who very professionally showed us to our accommodation which was of a very high standard.
Lovely comfortable beds in a tastefully decorated bedroom with French doors opening out on to the garden.
Through from the bedroom we had personal use of our own private lounge complete with television ,DVDs, books etc. Through from the bedroom there is a beautifully finished shower room complete with a lovely walk-in shower unit and all the toiletries you could want!!
we also had access to our own private fridge- great for bringing in a bottle of wine to enjoy in comfortable surroundings after a hard day's sightseeing!!!! Coral has obviously made a huge effort to make this B and B a real home from home -fresh flowers in each room added a lovely touch.
As for the breakfasts where do we start?
Each morning we had our breakfast in front of a sunny window and what a breakfast it was!
Cereals, hot croissants and pains au chocolat, toast made from delicious local bread, jams, honey and whatever cooked breakfast you could want. Delicious!
Coral was the perfect hostess. Welcoming but unobtrusive.
A font of local knowledge and extremely helpful.
Having had such a lovely stay my Mum and I would definitely recommend "Struan" for anybody wishing to spend a relaxing, stress-free and comfortable holiday in St. Andrews!!
Thank you Coral!!!

Struan Bed & Breakfast

After trawling the web for hours only to find over-priced, average looking accommodation, I took a break from the screen, made a cup of tea and had a wee look at the holiday ads in the paper. Here I immediately found Struan St Andrews and my holiday headache started to wane.

What made Struan the perfect place to stay?

High quality accommodation - unlike most B&Bs, Struan offers a spacious private suite with your own lounge, dining area, shower room and garden patio. Tasteful decor and furnishings give a real "at home" feel the opposite of guest house twee. The patio doors, glass panelled doors separating the lounge and bedroom, and bay front window ensure your stay is sunny throughout the day.

Special touches - petits fours, whisky decanter, fair trade tea/coffee, mini fridge with fresh milk and bottled water, fresh flowers, selection of books, magazines and DVDs, heated towel rail.

Breakfast - delicious fresh fruit salad, croissants, pains au chocolat, porridge and traditional cooked breakfast. All high quality, served in your room, at your convenience.

Hospitality - there are no unfriendly 'no vacancies' signs hanging outside Struan. You arrive at the Napiers' home, and park in their driveway. Your host, Coral, provides ample local information guides, but she also generously offers advice on tide times, wind directions, bus routes and anything else a walker, golfer or general tourist may wish to know about. Coral will not only ring round recommended restaurants to book you a table, she may well offer to chauffeur you down there!

This is the sort of place you won't want to leave.

“Home Away From Home”

Struan Bed & Breakfast

I traveled to St. Andrews to work the Ladies British Open recently and was only told I was going a week in advance. By that time, every B & B (including the university) was booked to full capacity. Very expensive hotels like The Fairmont (at $600US nightly) were the only availabilities. I truly believe I had an angel guiding me along the way when I stumbled upon Struan B & B. About a 20 min walk to the city center, Struan is nestled in a cute, quaint, and peacefully quiet neighborhood just outside the city. You're greeted by it's owner, Coral, who graciously walks you into your 'mini-apartment' located in her home. You have your own living room area with a small sofa with 2 wood end tables, a matching sofa chair, wood coffee table, fireplace, & flat-screen tv. There's a round table with 2 chairs placed at the bay window to sit and work on the FREE wireless internet and have breakfast, while looking out into the front garden. French doors (with curtains that hang in front) open to your full-size bedroom painted in a beautiful dark green with white framing and wood floors (throughout the place as well). The queen-size bed is sooooooo comfy you sleep like a baby. The linens/comforter are really quite soft and cozy. There's a fireplace in the bedroom with a bottle of brandly and 2 snifters for guests to have (perhaps as a nightcap). There's a wood armoire to hang clothes and a wood dresser for clothes as well. There are french doors that open to the backyard with your own patio with a wood table/chairs to sit in the garden. A door opens to a path to another door to the bathroom. Spacious, with toiletries, bathmat, towel warmer (you rarely find a towel warmer in any hotel). The best part? Coral's home-cooked breakfast every morning to your liking. Warm croissants/toast, fresh fruit, cereals, eggs, bacon - anything you like. She'll drive you into town or pick you up if you don't feel like walking. The day I had to work the golf tournament which was from 6am-4pm, she was so sweet to pack me a lunch with sandwiches, fruit, tea, cookies.

I had heard a story about a golf pro who, after walking into her B&B she reserved, she turned around and walked back out because of its poor condition. I walked through town and popped my head into a couple of the B&B's I had attempted to stay at and, after viewing their rooms the dining areas, I was so happy to be at Struan. It was truly your own private 'home away from home!' I'll surely be seeing Coral again on my next trip out to St. Andrews :)

“A true home from home.”

Struan Bed & Breakfast

Having been a frequent visitor to St Andrews for 30 years we are always on the lookout for something different. Usually wary of bed & breakfasts, this year we relented and booked Struan, St Andrews - and very glad we did.
Talk about a home from home! Our suite (the only accommodation offered) consisted three rooms - a bedroom, shower-room and separate sitting room. All good-sized rooms and not just created for the sake of it. What a difference it makes being able to sit on a comfortable couch, relax or watch television after a day's sight-seeing without resorting to sitting on the bed!
Breakfast, which was served in the sitting room, was excellent and provided when WE wanted it rather than at the owner's convenience. A fridge was provided and we were actively encouraged to use it - and to bring in whatever food we wanted. All the crockery/cutlery we needed was readily supplied.
The bedroom has French doors that lead out into the back garden and, although the garden is used by the family, we were actively encouraged to make whatever use we wished of it - the weather can be (and was for us) good in Scotland.
Struan is within easy walking distance of the town centre and parking (unlike most of St Andrews) is not a problem.
I could go on, but won't - you get the general drift. All credit to the owner, Coral Napier, for providing something different in a town filled with accommodation. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.
