The Struan Bed and Breakfast in St. Andrews is absolutely the BEST!
We stayed here in April 2008 and were absolutely thrilled. We were greeted warmly upon arrival by Coral Napier, the owner, and our entire visit was wonderful.
Struan's accomodations are excellent. The Bed and Breakfast is immaculate and very tastefully decorated.
The suite contains your very own large living room, including a fireplace, sofa, chair, coffee table, end tables, and a round dining table in front of a large bay window overlooking the front garden.
The bedroom also was a very nice size and included a very comfortable king size bed (which could be made into two twins). There is a large chest of drawers, two smaller chests on either side of the bed, and a large armoire to store hanging clothes. Again, there is a beautiful fireplace in the bedroom. On the mantel, a crystal container awaits you with Scotland's famous whiskey. The bedroom overlooks a beautiful, private garden in the back, which you can access through the french doors.
The bathroom is completely updated and included a large shower (plenty of hot water!), sink, toilet, and large heated towel rack. A window provides plenty of sunlight. The bathroom is only for your use and is large.
Another of our favorite parts of Struan were the breakfasts! Delicious does not begin to describe them. The food was expertly prepared and there was so much we should not have eaten anything for the rest of the day! An assortment of fresh fruits, juices, coffee/tea, muesli, cereals, croissants, breads, toasts, yogurts, jams, jellies, honey arrived, only to be followed by a traditional Scottish hot breakfast or eggs cooked to order with bacon and sausages. Coral will gladly work with your schedule and prepare it fresh for the time that works for you.
Speaking of food, Coral also leaves the best desserts and cookies with an assortment of teas in your living room. You have your own pot to brew the hot water in, and she leaves fresh milk and water bottles in your own private refrigerator located in a storage closet in your suite.
Coral and her husband, Norman, strive to make your stay memorable and enjoyable. Norman even took my husband to the golf course early one morning so I could sleep in! They are both a wealth of information, and have a whole drawer full of brochures and pamphlets about the area. I asked so many questions but both were very gracious and so willing to help! And they have everything you would need - hairdryer, iron, ironing board, toiletries, alarm clock, phone....My husband required band-aids for his blisters from new golf shoes - and Coral came to the rescue! And when we were pressed for time to get to a local distillery tour after his golfing, Coral had prepared an elaborate lunch so we could make the deadline for the tour and eat in the car!
Another aspect we loved about Struan was the location. Just a little outside of town, Struan was a nice retreat to return to after a busy day and night. It is nestled in a cozy, safe neighborhood but just a few minutes to the city center. I did notice a lot of B and B's in town, but I also noticed that parking seemed to be at a premium. Coral and Norman reserve the driveway for you, so there was never a problem finding a parking space as I thought there might be had we stayed in the city center. There was also plenty of street parking in front of the house at all times when friends came to visit us.
Wireless internet is also available, which is a plus!
My advice when visiting St. Andrews - stay at Struan! You will love it! We have stayed in many fine resorts and hotels across the world, and Struan is at the top of our list!
