“Quite nice, but....”

Maryborough Hotel & Spa

3 of 5 stars
Dublin, Ireland
May 26, 2008

We just stayed there recently for two nights. We stayed in one of the suites in the old part of the house which seemed very impressive. We arrived late at night, so when we opened the curtains in the morning we got a lovely surprise as our rooms looked onto beautiful gardens with many many different coloured rhodedendrum trees - really beautiful. There are only 5 suites in the old house and ours was very spacious and quiet to say the least. If you are reserving a suite .. there is a bit of a walk up the old winding staircase of the house to the suites. The staff helped bring our stuff up, so it wasn't a problem really. I didn't realise that the suites were furnished in "the old style" in keeping with the old style of the house (I was thinking they'd be a larger version of the photos shown on the website). I was a bit surprised at some of the furniture in the living room - e.g. two antique dining room chairs, but the upholstery on the seating part was ripped from left to right on both of them. I'd never sit on them! Some of the occasional tables reminded me of furniture you might find in your granny's house 50 years ago. The coffee table was very modern though. The writing desk in the bedroom had a lot of white ring marks on it which are easily removed with a product found in most hardware shops. The bed was OK, even though it was a Zip and Link (two singles) - bed linen was perfect.
We were attending a family function and had to dress up for it, and there was one thing I really would have liked ... a full length mirror! I definitely liked other touches in the suite, such as the complimentary bottles of wine (small ones), water, the mini bottles of Baileys, good selection of toilettries. There were robes, slippers, an ironing board, trouser press, safe etc.. There was also a turn-down service which was very nice and appreciated. The bath in the bathroom looks like it could do with a good scrub between the tiles - you know how the grouting can get .. bleach works every time though. It also took me ages to figure out that you have to turn the dial on the shower three times in order to get it to the hottest postion, so I had a warm shower the first day, and a better one the next day. We had other family members staying at the hotel too, and they had mixed feelings about their stay. We didn't use the spa or pool, but we had a look - looked very nice.
Would I go back ? I probably would. The gardens are beautiful, peaceful, and on a sunny day .. just lovely to sit there reading the paper and enjoying a very nice cappucino. The staff were friendly, and efficient.

“gorgeous hotel”

Maryborough Hotel & Spa

May 13, 2008

i attending a wedding there recently. its a really gorgeous hotel, beautiful gardens and it has the most friendly staff i've come across in ages.

i stayed in a spa room which was really nice, its very peaceful but a bit of a trek from the main reception though. the bathroom was a little impractical, joint shower/bath and when using the shower, the water tended to come out over the bath and flood the floor. on a plus note though good power hairdryers for once!
also just to note that there is no full length mirror in the actual room, the only one is in the bathroom against the bath, kind of strange..

brekkie was yummy, great choice. the food in zings was amazing, the desserts are out of this world...

i didn't get a chance to use the spa, it looked lovely though,

i will definately be back

“Four Star Hotel? Are You Kidding?”

Maryborough Hotel & Spa

2 of 5 stars
Dublin, Ireland
Apr 14, 2008

We stayed recently for two nights for a wedding. A very nice setting and reception area but a dated and unkept annex let the whole place down. In order to get to our room we had to walk through a crowded bar area where another wedding was taking place. We really felt like we were intruding on the couples day.

The room was tidy and clean but dated, with worn carpets and a bathroom with many signs of repair and damage. It would appear that some of the other rooms facing the other direction are better and include balconies.

We had a very average meal on the first night in Zings restaurant. We felt that they chef was trying to be too fussy with the menu where simple wholesome food would have been preferable. We were woken on the Saturday morning to the sound of bottles from the wedding the night before being dumped into the refuse directly below our window. This went on for 45 minutes.

The wedding itself was a great success and we didn't use the spa so can't comment on that. The experience also wasn't cheap. For the money that we paid we would have expected a far better experience than this.

“gret weekend”

Maryborough Hotel & Spa

Feb 29, 2008

had a "surprise" treat at the weekend - an early mother's day spa weekend at Maryborough and it was just pure heaven. everything and everyone that we met could not have been better and the hotel (especially the spa) is truly the best I've been to in ages...

“Great Hotel”

Maryborough Hotel & Spa

Feb 28, 2008

I have Stayed in this hotel over the last few years on numerous occasions and I find some of the previous reviews to be a bit baffling. My partner and I always find the rooms to be clean and comfortable and always well kept. The service is always very good from the girls at the desk to the staff in the restaurant and bar. They have a leisure centre and spa (what a spa even a relaxation pool and area for us poor men to have peace) The bar area is comfortable and relaxing and there is always a good atmosphere in the bar on the weekend with some music playing. Food and service is good. We will be back again and again.
