“Clean, chic, stylish... the usual City Inn formula”

City Inn Manchester

4 of 5 stars
Wiltshire, England

We stayed for a weekend and found the City Inn very similar to the London branch, although inexplicably it was more expensive.

Bedrooms and public areas are chic, clean and stylish. Bed linen and towels were of a very high standard. The bathrooms are particularly smart, although we missed the fluffy dressing gowns of the London branch. Desk service was, as always, efficient and polite.

Free wifi in all rooms was very welcome. TV in the bedroom was via an AppleMac, which could cause moments of puzzlement, especially if you are more of a PC user!

As ever, food and drink is rather expensive and we preferred to walk to one of many excellent coffee shops, pubs and restaurants within easy range of the hotel.

It is just a short walk to the nearest tramway station at Piccadilly Gardens, which gives cheap and easy access to most of the central area. Manchester Piccadilly mainline railway station is also very close.

We like City Inn and the new Manchester branch measured up to expectations.

Long term car parking can be very expensive in Manchester. Try Park Avenue parking near GMex. They do a weekend special for £15 that runs from Friday pm through to Sunday evening.

“Fabulous hotel”

City Inn Manchester

Stayed here for one night when we went to a concert at the Apollo. Everyting about this place was great. Hotel room super cool and trendy with all the mod cons. Staff were excellent and helpfull. Great bar area.
Breakfast was not the best we had and a bit slow but the staff made up for it when they kept checking if we had been served and chased it up.
I did also order wine, beer and balloons in our room as a birthday treat for my husband but the balloons did not arrive.
When we checked out and they asked if we were happy with the balloons they were more than apologetic about them not appearing. They promised me they had arrived but someone else must have found them in their room!! They didn't charge us for the drinks in the room to make up for it and as the staff were so good we could not get angry at all.
All in all a few hiccups but the quality of the hotel, staff, location etc more than made up for it.
Also as an added bonus Mark Ronson and his band who we went to see were also staying there.
A very posh hotel with a laid back feel, we will return.

“OK, but...”

City Inn Manchester

Feb 17, 2008

This is one of those hotels which should be an unalloyed pleasure but it's somehow a bit chilly and not as much of a winner as it should be.

On the plus side - good location, nice and smart public areas and it's all very functional. It has all the promise of a sassy urban venue.

On the negative side - I paid £159 for a room at a weekend and it had a shower only. The room itself was white and clean, but the bedding felt sparse and the bed didn't reach the comfort levels of really good hotels. Meanwhile, the Mac Television and entertainment centre is clever but actually rather annoying and slow to use if, er, you just want to watch television. It sits there telling you it's "loading BBC1" as opposed to just switching itself on, and I never found out how to change the volume. Chairs in the room feel more suited to an office than a living space.

Room service breakfast was no more than adequate: toast that had been warmed for a few seconds rather than actually toasted and an undercooked sausage.

I don't mean to sound too picky but I can't see any reason for staying here rather than the V&A if you can get a good rate there, and this has many of the annoyances of the Radisson Edwardian but the latter wins on room size and facilities. A bit of warmth in the decor and in the hotel as a whole would work wonders.

“Cold service lets down cool hotel”

City Inn Manchester

2 of 5 stars
Suffolk, UK

Really stylish hotel in the centre of Manchester. Rooms very comfy with some hi-tech Apple Mac entertainment system. To be honest, I found it quite fiddly to work but having free use of a computer and free wi-fi was a plus.

At 11.30 PM some workman turned up and started sanding down the wall outside my room!!! Another guest complained and he made a quick retreat.

The real downside here is the restaurant. I waited 15 minutes before I could get in for Breakfast. The service was cold and very slow and you have to order hot dishes. My scrambled egg and smoked salmon was OK but portion size rediculously small.

It toook nearly an hour to have breakfast - not good enough if you're in a hurry.

“Disappointed”

City Inn Manchester

Feb 5, 2008

Booked this hotel on the back of the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Have to say I was disappointed. Paid £99 for a superior twin having booked three months ago on late rooms.

Plus points:
Good location.
Nice public areas.
Pleasant staff.
Nice bathroom.

Minus points:
Allocated double when we requested a twin. (Room 314)
Carpet was soiled in several places.
Chair and coffee table had marks on them.
Bath mat was soiled on one side.
Skirting board had dirty marks on it.
Flyer on desk offered 'Winter Sales Special' for the month of Jan...it was Feb!
One of the lifts failed on Sun morning resulting in queues to take the other two lifts.

I don't consider myself over-fussy but have stayed in many hotels and these things leaped out at me without me specifically looking for them. Maybe we were just unfortunate, but for a hotel that only opened in May 2007 it was not up to the standard I would have expected.
