“Small, Dirty, and Even Nasty”

Maubeuge Hotel

1 of 5 stars
Los Angeles
Mar 26, 2008

My girlfriend and I were on a 23 day European vacation, and 7 out of the 8 hotels we stayed at were very nice to reasonable as they were all budget hotels. As you guessed it, the Hotel de Maubeuge does not fall into our happy experiences of hotels.

The rooms are small, which isn’t a problem for me at all. As we are not in the room much and it was just the two of us. On a funny note, the bathrooms were so small that my knees touched the walls when I was sitting (I’m 6ft tall). The first room we checked into looked and smelled dirty right from the beginning. As we aren’t that picky, we over looked this. Within the first 5 minutes, we start to really see how dirty the room was. The floors were dirty with spots and stains, there was still hair and other items on the floor as if it had not be vacuumed in weeks. The bathroom walls had mildew. There was a medium amount of mildew that could be seen if just looking through the bathroom door. When looking in the shower, it was disgusting, thick and growing. We’ve now been in the room about 8 minutes, and decided to look at the bed a little closer as we noticed the top comforter had hair. We pulled back the comforter to find 100s of strands of hair, sex stains to include a 5” by 1.5” fresh crusty tracks of who knows what. That was it, we were out of that room. Down to the front desk we went, and requested a new clean room. The guy at the desk couldn’t believe the room was dirty, and I invited to bring him up to show him. He declined, and gave us a new room. Room #2… Almost as bad as room #1, but a little cleaner on all levels. The sheets were still pretty nasty, so we went and requested new sheets and made the bed ourselves. The new sheets smelled clean, but still had hair in them. Go figure. We picked out the hair and made the bed. This stay in paris we never returned to our room until late at night when we would fall right to sleep, and we woke up early and got out.

Thinking we just had a bad room, I had talked to a couple other guests the first morning and ask how they like their rooms. The 2 couples in two different rooms were unhappy with there rooms as well, and said they were quite dirty. I agreed and said our room was the same, but didn’t give them details of just how bad.

Long story short, we are scared by this hotel and had nightmares of it in the following days. Wish I was joking, but it was that bad.

Do not stay here, you will find better quality in a hostel. I’m a camping out doors kind of guy so there isn’t much that bothers me, but this placed step over even my line.

“OK for a 2 star”

Maubeuge Hotel

We stayed 3 nights, in town for the England rugby game. The room was at first a disappointment on account of its very small size, but when you remember this is only a 2 star hotel and take into account the good standard of cleanliness........ well, OK. We had the smallest toilet (room) I've ever seen

Breakfast is disappointing, but again, 2 star standard - about 7 Euros for a croissant & piece of bread, small juice and hot drink. Service good, breakfast room also clean. No teamaking facilities or kettle in rooms. 24 hour reception helpful.

Our room at the front was too hot to keep the balcony doors closed, but therefore too noisy from road noise until about 3.30am for my lighter sleeping wife to sleep. When our friends in a smaller room complained about their room size on arrival, the guy on reception kindly warned them that they really wouldn't want a slightly larger room at the front because of the road noise!

Positionwise, very good, only about 200 yards from the taxi exit from Gare Du Nord and handy for all those restaurants and bars opposite the station. Cost 2 Euros for 15 minutes on their internet computer, compared with 1 Euro at a nearby Internet/Telephone place.

“Basic but clean”

Maubeuge Hotel

Feb 22, 2008

I've just come back from a 3 night stay at the hotel. Having read some previous reviews I was a bit apprehensive so I was relieved to find a clean tidy room. Our room faced the street so it was noisy but we were still able to sleep at night. The bathroom was clean though very small with good towels and a very good hot shower. The room was very basic and not kitted out like in the photographs on the website, however for a 2 star hotel, what would you expect? The location is excellent. We opted out of paying extra for the hotel breakfast. There is an excellent patisserie at the top of the road which sells great croissants for under a euro each.

“Awful hotel - lowest point of our trip!”

Maubeuge Hotel

Dallas, Texas

We stayed in this hotel several years ago, but because it is probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, I decided to go ahead and write a review even though our trip wasn't recent. We booked this hotel through a travel agent in Germany - it was kind of a last minute decision to go to Paris so we didn't have time to research hotels. We realized it was only a 2 star hotel, but we figured we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyway, so it was no big deal. Wrong. This hotel was absolutely awful. The place was a complete dump. The wall paper was peeling off - it just looked like everything was falling apart. They may have remodeled since we stayed there. It was noisy at night. Even though we stayed on the third floor, we could still hear people talking LOUDLY and laughing in the lobby area throughout the ENTIRE night - and these were the people WORKING in the lobby, not just guests - it was like they were totally oblivious to the fact that other people were trying to sleep. We couldn't get any sleep partly because of all the noise and partly because the beds were very uncomfortable - it was like sleeping on cots. We ended up in a room with 2 small beds that my husband and I had to push together. I can't remember if all their rooms had these beds or if we just couldn't get a king or queen size due to availability. The bathroom in our room was the absolute worst. It was filthy and smelled of mildew and we had to keep the door shut tight so we didn't smell it in the room. It would disgust me to even walk into the bathroom, much less take a shower standing in the nasty tub. Concierge services were also quite lacking. The hotel is close to the bus stop and you can get around to the Metro and other areas pretty easily, but don't count on the concierge to guide you. Also, there aren't many great restaurants close by, so it's not like you could just walk out at night and find a nice place to eat within walking distance. I would never stay in this hotel again.

We stayed at this hotel last week. The room was small but very clean, maid was in every day. Lady and young guy we met were very helpful.Older man was of no help, told us to use metro on busiest day of the week to go to Sacre Coeur. When we asked the younger guy he gave us directions and we were there in 10 mins. Bus stop right outside the door and brings you into the centre of Paris. Gare Du Nord station just 5 mins walk. There was a small late night grocery shop up the road from hotel they were very nice. We woul def stay there again.
