“Ok for the money”

Hotel Charing Cross

If you look at internet pictures of the room and lobby, you'll wonder if you are in the same hotel when you get there. The front desk staff is very friendly. When you leave the hotel you have to leave the key at the front desk. If you are claustrophobic, you won't like the elevator, very cramped and only goes to the fifth floor, don't get a room on the 6th, no windows! The location tends to be noisy as it is close to a major transfer point for subways.
Maid service is pathetic at best. Each night when we did our sightseeing and came back to freshen up, no towels, no toilet paper, no coffee, no cups etc. always had to go to the front desk and ask for what would should have been in the room in the first place each day. We had a group of nine in 3 rooms, at check out, we all had mini bar charges added on, though we never touched the mini bars. The rooms have no clock or radio and TV is 6 channels, all french. There is a small closet in the room, no shelving or dresser in rooms, so gets quite cramped with luggage since rooms are very small.

“Great accommodation, fabulous location”

My teenage daughters and I spent 7 nights in this hotel in early December. The location is fantastic, just around the corner from Gare St. Lazare, Printemps, Gallaries Lafayatte and The Opera so we were able to get anywhere quickly or spend hours shopping! With the exception of the female receptionist, who was a little rude, the staff were very pleasant and very helpful, assisting with touring and night out bookings. We had a fairly large room by Paris standards, where 3 of us and our suitcases fit very comfortably. Everything was clean however the bathroom had a slight smell in the evenings from the floor drain, which they could probably fix. Breakfast was great and very filling. Would stay there again next time we visit Paris.

One could not ask for a better location if you want to be near the Department Stores and the Gare St. Lazare is very close. Lots of retaurants and shopping.

The front desk was always helpful and spoke good English. My room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was nicely tiled.

For a modest price it offered all I needed.

“Poor value”

Rooms so small could barely get in one. Carpets last changed in 70's. Water came down wall in one room, but hotel would only bring in a a cot. Great location for train travel in France, but would not stay again!

“Okay hotel in a great location”

I just returned from a 5 day stay here with 2 friends. This was my first time in Paris, so I can't compare this hotel to others in Paris, but can compare it to hotels in the US, so Americans will have a point of reference if they are thinking about staying here.

In the US, this would probably be a one star hotel...comparable to a Motel 6 you would find off any interstate. The room was tiny (I would estimate it to be 10'x20'). It was very clean, but there was peeling paint and plaster in a few places. The towels were thin and there were no washcloths. The bathroom was small but adequate (what's the deal with those Parisian showers?) and there was plenty of hot water and great water pressure. The hairdryer was awful...be sure to bring your own, it's worth the trouble.

The staff was very friendly and helpful with restaurant recommendations and directions. The location was terrific...one block from the St Lazare metro station and only a few more blocks to 2 others, so you had access to just about any line you needed. You were also only a few blocks from Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, 2 of the largest dept. stores in Paris. Also very convenient to a pharmacy, grocery store and a variety of cafes (a word of warning: stay away from the Pub St. Lazare-mediocre food and they tried to overcharge us). As 3 women travelling alone, we always felt very safe in the neighborhood and in the metro station after dark.

We talked to other travellers (from US and England) who are familiar with Paris and they felt like this was a good value for the money, so I'll take their word for it. If you are looking for a charming Parisian hotel with antique reproductions and bellmen and lots of little extras, this is not your place. However, if you are looking for basic accomodations and friendly staff, I would recommend it. I would also say that the photos on various travel sites accurately depict the hotel.
