“Nice enough hotel - very disapointed though!”

Pullman Versailles Chateau

Dec 28, 2007

My wife and I stayed at the now Pullman hotel in Versailles just before christmas this year as the Trianon Palace was closed for refurbishment.

The reception and public areas downstairs are very modern and nice if you like that kind of thing (personally when in Versailles I prefer a bit of French Tradition so its not really mine) and the late night staff who checked us in were very friendly and helpful and even upgraded our room for us.

Stepping out of the lift on the third floor was a bit of a shock as you soon realise that the only part of the hotel that is modern is the reception area! Upstairs we are talking seriously dated and fairly worn and the rooms are exactly the same. The bathrooms are old and small and the rooms have got that definate 80's feel to them.

We had some serious problems during our stay that included me having to phone reception four times from 8:00am - 10:00am in one morning to ask them to stop the workmen in the room next door to us using a loud hammer and drill. I was especially shocked (if not surprised knowing france as I do) that the manager failed to call me back to apologise or make ammends and in general I just felt like the staff didn't really care too much about what was going on. In the end my wife (who is French) got out of bed and went to ask the workmen to stop, having been told by the reception that the work was happening on the street!

If you are going to stay in Versailles stay at the Triannon Palace (even though that is even more modern than this place after its face lift!!). I would stay at the Pullman again if I had to, but only if I HAD to!

“Great experience”

Booked this hotel online directly and got a great deal on a fabulous room. The bed was massive and was so comfortable. There is parking available (fee payable) and the location could not be better - a stone's throw from the chateau. Breakfast was included and was very good. Hotel is top of the range - excellent!

“Very dissappointing”

It obviously wasn't our month for travelling around France. The hotel is very easy to find, and is just a short walk from the Chateau de Versaille, as well as the train station. There is parking in the street, but I wouldn't recommend it. We saw cars parked overnight being towed away at 8.15 am. Use the hotel parking even though it is expensive at 15 euros a night.
The hotel was in the middle of major renovations to the lobby, restaurant etc. when we arrived. We were aware of this and had been assured it would make no difference to our stay, as the rooms were not affected. We arrived quite late at night, having driven from Lyon, but the young man on the reception desk was very helpful and there were no problems checking in. The room was much smaller than we were expecting. As it was the end of August, it was also very hot, even at 10 pm and we found the air conditioning did not work. We asked if we could change rooms but it appeared they all had the same problem. When we spoke to some one about it the next day, we were told it was a problem they were aware of, and would do their best to fix it. When we returned later in the day, the a/c was working but very, very noisey. The room itself was clean and tidy, but we found used cigarette butts on the balcony, even though we were supposed to be in a non smoking room. There was only one robe in the bathroom, one pair of slippers, even though there were 2 people staying. When requested others were bought to the room, but only after a long wait. Our room looked out on to the main road and it was very noisey, although offering a pretty view of the Town Hall.
The position of the hotel to the Chateau was great, just a short walk. Could not try the restaurant for breakfast due to the renovations, but found cafes close by.
Overall, very dissappointing for a Sofitel.

“Nice Hotel”

Stayed here 26-29 July to attend the Swan Lake performances at the Chateau. Conveniently located for the Chateau. Nice room overlooking the Hotel de Ville and its gardens. Nice decor and lovely bathroom, separate wc. Not that impressed with the "My Bed" - it was overly hot and the matress topper was not exactly flat - I felt a bit like I'd roll off if I wasn't careful!! Breakfast was adequate and served temporarily in a large event room whilst the usual restaurant is being renovated. Contrary to a previous reviewer's findings the breakfast staff were lovely and very funny- we had a real laugh about our french and they were very good at teaching us proper french!
If you want to go inside the Chateau turn up at about 4pm when the tourists/daytrippers are leaving, rather than arriving, and you get in for a reduced fee and it is a bit quieter although I fear the Chateau is never really quiet. The Hall of Mirrors was very crowded and is being renovated at the same time.
For dining forget the tourist traps near the Chateau they are expensive and poor quality. Go to the Notre Dame area to the corners aound the market square which are full of restaurants - we had lovely Moroccan food and we found a lovely Thai restaurant on the Rue des Deux Portes. In the main street near the market area there is a fabulous patissiere - we bought some cakes and they were to die for. There is usually a large queue of locals outside of the door - testament to the quality of their bread etc..sorry I can't recall the name.
In France I have never met rude and surly french people until I went to Versailles Main Post Office! They kept us waiting 30 minutes to buy some philatelic stamps. The service in the main post office was truly appalling and needs some serious attitude adjustment - to be avoided at all costs. We left our postcards with the hotel reception and they took WEEKS to arrive home!

The Hotel Sofitel was very handy to get to local railway station and therefore Paris/airports using the train. We had a much better experience of food in Versailles compared to Paris as well so would love to return.

“Ideally location, nice room”

We got a good deal (about 140 Euro for a double) and the room was about the most spacious we experienced in France. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom large and equiped. It is a 1 to 2 minute walk to the Palace so you can roll out of bed and queue up before the crowds! The train station is literally across the street for your trip into Paris. The TI is right downstairs and had the combo tickets that save you time and money, too. Not a lot of character as this is a big chain, but convenient and very comfortable.
