Stayed here for one night and good thing it was only one night. The location is perfect for sightseeing, because it's right in the middle of everything. There are plenty of small restaurants and cafes nearby and the chateau is not too far. Unfortunately, I was traveling for business, so this did not matter to me.

What did matter to me was the fact that the bed was probably as old as the hotel (uneven and hard) and the pillows were about as thick as a towel (useless). I found a lot of hair in the sheets, which I am guessing was from the previous guest. The bathroom was extremely small, but it was very clean and functional. The TV was tiny. There is no Internet connection available and phone use is limited.

If you're a tourist, this hotel is ok. Otherwise, stay somewhere else.

“Charming hotel - pity about the thin walls”

Le Cheval Rouge is a lovely hotel in Versailles. It's an older property, but with plenty of charm. We had a quad room which was large enough for our family of 4 and very comfortable for our 2 night stay.
It's very convenient for the Chateau, just 10 minutes walk away, and the free parking is a bonus. Just outside the hotel is a good market, shops and a good choice of reasonably priced restaurants.
The staff are friendly. All the staff I encountered spoke good English, but if you can manage a little French they will appreciate it if you make the effort.
The only problem is noise from neighbouring rooms. We had a young baby in the next room and the noise in the early evening was bad. Fortunately, the baby slept fairly well so we got a reasonable nights sleep, but noise could be a problem. Even creaky floorboards from the next room were loud.
In summary, a nice hotel that will give you more of a flavour of France than one of the big multi-nationals and it's ideal for visiting the Chateau. But light sleepers might have a problem.
I would stay there again.

“Nice place to stay, but not to sleep”

Stayed here for three nights. Check-in was quick and easy, and the receptionist had no problems checking us in in English after my rusty French proved not to be up to the job!

Room was compact, with everything that we needed for our stay - double bed, en-suite with shower, TV with half-a-dozen French channels plus BBC1, 2 & Sky News (not that we came to Versailles to watch TV, but if you aren't visiting the chateau there's not a huge amount else to do). The room was really well presented, and was a very nice place to come back to after a day out, to relax in before going out in the evening, and to go to sleep in.

Unfortunately, it's even easier to wake up in. If your neighbour has set his alarm for 5am, then the thin-ness of the walls means that you'll be woken up by his alarm at 5am. When he leaves his room at 6am, you'll be woken up again by the heavy clunking of the roomkeys in his door lock, and then again when the neighbour on the other side decides it's time to get up and go for breakfast, etc.

After all that, if you still fancy a lie-in then forget it, because housekeeping will be round knocking on your door before it's even got to 9am, and will be back every half hour until you get fed up and leave your room in the morning (and this wasn't a one-off, it happened every morning).

This is a real shame, as this is a lovely hotel, otherwise well-run, and far better priced than the hotel chains elsewhere in Versailles. If only I could have got a full night's sleep ....

“Hotel du Cheval Rouge was excellent”

A great hotel to stay in if you do not like the big and busy chains. It was quiet, clean and extremely well placed. Walking distance to Le Chateau and Versailles Rive-Droite train station. An excellent place to stay and commute to Paris. The breakfast is great at the hotel and represents a typical french breakfast. Bistro's and Cafe's to the left and right of the hotel made it quite easy to eat dinner in a different restaurant every night. Every Bistro and restaurant provided excellent food. I have no complaints with the service and accommodations provided by this hotel.

“Basic Comfort... But Everything We Needed”

Le Cheval Rouge

We chose the Cheval Rouge in Versailles as we were driving with 3 small children from the Netherlands and needed enough space for the 5 of us, a kitchen, and safe parking. We checked-in with a friendly woman who spoke no English (a little French helps) and parked the car in the secured parking area for the three days. The fact that the drive was easy, finding the hotel simple, and we could park the car for free without worrying about it made the choice simple.

The hotel has an older feel to it (without a lot of charm in the interior architecture), but our room had the necessary basics: two double beds, a cot for the baby, wardrobe, kitchenette (w/fridge, stove, dishes, silverware, etc.), bath w/tub, etc. There wasn't an elevator, but we (well, my husband) didn't mind dragging our luggage up stairs.

The day we arrived we noticed an extensive outdoor market in the square right outside the hotel entrance. One day it had clothing, purses, shoes/boots, accessories, etc., the next it was primarily food (baked goods, fruits, veggies, etc.). We had fun walking the stalls looking for bread/cheese/produce and breakfast goodies. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel for this reason (I think it cost 6 EUR, and there were plenty of interesting and delicious alternatives). Not only was there a great market, but there were plenty of boulangeries and several restaurants right up the street.

It was a 10 min walk to the train station Rive Gauche where we caught the train into Paris one day. We paid 5.60 EUR for a return ticket out of one of the ticket machines (the kids were free). The inbound trip took about 35 min and the return trip took longer... about 45 min. We were a little concerned about traveling with the 3 kids, all their gear and a double stroller in the metro. Really though, it worked out well with a little advance planning. The chateau was also about 10min (pretty) walk away from the hotel.

We didn't need or use the internet or the phone. We had two English channels (BBC) on the TV. The windows opened completely to the car-park courtyard with a small 'garden' in the middle. The view was not unpleasant, and it was very quiet the whole time we were there. Overall the hotel was nice enough (don't expect luxury), the location was great and we would consider staying there again.
