“Basic Comfort... But Everything We Needed”
We chose the Cheval Rouge in Versailles as we were driving with 3 small children from the Netherlands and needed enough space for the 5 of us, a kitchen, and safe parking. We checked-in with a friendly woman who spoke no English (a little French helps) and parked the car in the secured parking area for the three days. The fact that the drive was easy, finding the hotel simple, and we could park the car for free without worrying about it made the choice simple.
The hotel has an older feel to it (without a lot of charm in the interior architecture), but our room had the necessary basics: two double beds, a cot for the baby, wardrobe, kitchenette (w/fridge, stove, dishes, silverware, etc.), bath w/tub, etc. There wasn't an elevator, but we (well, my husband) didn't mind dragging our luggage up stairs.
The day we arrived we noticed an extensive outdoor market in the square right outside the hotel entrance. One day it had clothing, purses, shoes/boots, accessories, etc., the next it was primarily food (baked goods, fruits, veggies, etc.). We had fun walking the stalls looking for bread/cheese/produce and breakfast goodies. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel for this reason (I think it cost 6 EUR, and there were plenty of interesting and delicious alternatives). Not only was there a great market, but there were plenty of boulangeries and several restaurants right up the street.
It was a 10 min walk to the train station Rive Gauche where we caught the train into Paris one day. We paid 5.60 EUR for a return ticket out of one of the ticket machines (the kids were free). The inbound trip took about 35 min and the return trip took longer... about 45 min. We were a little concerned about traveling with the 3 kids, all their gear and a double stroller in the metro. Really though, it worked out well with a little advance planning. The chateau was also about 10min (pretty) walk away from the hotel.
We didn't need or use the internet or the phone. We had two English channels (BBC) on the TV. The windows opened completely to the car-park courtyard with a small 'garden' in the middle. The view was not unpleasant, and it was very quiet the whole time we were there. Overall the hotel was nice enough (don't expect luxury), the location was great and we would consider staying there again.
