“Nice but cramped”

Sofitel Montpellier

3 of 5 stars
Orlando, Florida, USA
Jun 13, 2007

Picked the Sofitel for our stay in Montpellier because it seems to be the best. It is nice and the personnel were all very helpful. But the room was small and they said all the rooms were the same size. It was like a cruise ship cabin! There is a lovely restaurant/bar/swimming pool/spa on the roof and the breakfast buffet was very nice (it was inclued in our room rate thank goodness - not sure if it would have been worth the price otherwise). Nice amenities.

This hotel is a nightmare to find - thank goodness for SatNav! A regular city hotel - clean and friendly. We were given a smoking room but they moved us straight away when we asked for non-smoking room. This hotel is attached to the main shopping mall and their parking is just in the public multi storey with access to the hotel.

“Nice hotel, great location”

My husband and I stayed one night on our way from Barcelona to Avignon and found the hotel clean, friendly, and in a great location. Breakfast was expensive at 20 euros each, but it was good food. The pool looked nice. We would recommend it for a one or two night stay.

“Nice Atmosphere, Lacking Service”

I stayed here one night with my wife on a trip to Barcelona and the South of France. The hotel itself was very nice, in a very nice part of Montpellier. The staff and service across the board however were completely inadequate for an establishment of its class.

To cite specifics: when we arrived back to our room in the evening, we discovered there was no remote control for the flat panel television. when I went to pick up the phone to call the front desk, there was no dialtone. I ventured down to the front desk to explain the situation and was told the phone would be turned on right away and was given a remote control. the remote control did not work, and when I went to pick up the phone to report it, it still didn't work either. I went back down to report it, was told again that the phone would be turned on, and that someone would bring a remote control to the room. the phone was never turned on, but a portar arrived about 45 minutes later, after I'd already fallen asleep, with yet another remote control that still didn't work. in the morning, the breakfast was advertised on weekends from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We arrived at 10:10 a.m. and the majority of the food was put away, but we didn't have any options so we paid the 22 Euros per person for the breakfast anyway and didn't get any sort of service whatsoever. I recommend passing on this establishment - I know I will next time.

“Excellent as always”

Sofitel Montpellier

I have stayed in this hotel 4 times and each stay has been excellent. The staff is charming and most helpful. The rooms are very comfortable if small. I have stayed in both Superior (standard) and Deluxe ( privilege) rooms. Both room categories are exactly the same size and layout. Deluxe rooms have the following extra amenities:

Flat screen tv
Robes and slippers
More bath products
Philipe Stark bath fixtures
Crown molding and more room decorations
free access to pool and fitness center
top two floors with restricted elevator access

The deluxe rooms have the Sofitel MyBed and I am not sure if the superior rooms do or not as I have stayed in a deluxe room the last two times I stayed.

The location of the hotel is an easy walk from the train station. When you exit the station turn to your right and follow the tram line which will lead you right by the hotel. The tram line will take a hard right and start down a hill. The hotel will be on your left as you go down the hill. If you are really loaded you can board the tram in front of the train station and take it one stop which cuts the walking distance in half. Driving is a bit tricky as you need to park in the Polygone P4 parking. Look for the small brown signs that direct you to the various hotels. This will lead you to the parking. The hotel has direct access to the parking lot and will validate your ticket for you at a reduced rate. The hotel also offers easy access to the historic center of Montpellier with the Place de la Comedie only a few minutes walk away.

The Sofitel MyBeds are extremely comfortable. The rooms feel upscale and well maintained. The breakfast buffet is very good and, being on the top floor, offers nice views of the city. The exterior of the hotel is basically a bland glass cube from the early 80's. Dont be put off by this as the hotel was completely renovated in 2002. Check out my photos which are of a deluxe room.
