“Cheap but very basic”

Acanthe du Temple Hotel

2 of 5 stars
sheffield yorks.
Oct 6, 2008

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights on the strength of some very favourable reviews on Trip Advisor.

My view is that most of these were over complimentary. The hotel is quite clean and the staff helpful and friendly ,as most people said, but both the rooms we were offered were quite small and very basic (not a single drawer in one of them). The decor was very much seaside boarding house circa 1970.

The one we settled for turned out to be very noisy during the night with both street cleaners and refuse lorries being very active for long periods.

Since the hotel is fairly cheap, I suppose you could argue that it offers value for money, but I would rather have paid more for better accommodation.

“Good location, decent value”

We thought that this hotel was good value for money.

A good location. The hotel is within easy walking distance of all the main sights in Nimes (Ampitheatre, temple, gardens etc), is relatively straightforward to find off the main one-way system (signposted off Boulevard Amiral Coubert) and is convenient for those who might want to go shopping.

The room wasn't huge but we fitted within it comfortably. It was clean, had decent storage, a nice bathroom and a window with an acceptable view. The hotel didn't appear to have a lift. Breakfast was euros 7.50 and other places nearby were cheaper, but there was plenty of food and a choice of drinks/yoghurt/cheese etc. The service was good and Eric (always smiling) had emailed us within 24 hrs of booking to confirm that we could park our car in the secure garage (euros 9.50 per night).

Place Esclafidous, within 2 minutes walk from the hotel, had 4 lovely restaurants, the nicest we found in Nimes.

“Excellent hotel”

Acanthe du Temple Hotel

Aug 8, 2008

An excellent choice of accommodation in Nimes. The hotel is spotlessly clean and great value. There is an excellent breakfast in the morning. There are only four parking spaces so book in advance, however, there is more than ample cheap parking in Nimes.

“Charming with character”

Acanthe du Temple Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Anglesey, North Wales
Aug 4, 2008

Most of the Hotels in Nimes are 2 star small hotels and usually we like to stay in a typical modern 3/4 star chain Hotel, initialy we were rather dubious, but after reading Trip Advisor decided to book it through Venere and we were definetly not disappointed. A charming small hotel superbly located for all Nimes sights, very clean and welcoming. Decided to have breakfast the 1st day at €7.50 p.p. which was plentiful. Room had a ceiling fan, hairdryer and clean towels everyday but not tea/coffee making facilities. A good Irish pub just on the corner. All hotels in the area were well signposted so it was quite easy to find. Our only complaint was we were woken around 5.00am every morning by the noise of the road sweepers. Took the train to Avignon about 30 mins away, €57 for 3 adults and 1 child well worth a visit. All in all a nice break but eating out quite expensive.

“Great value for money”

Acanthe du Temple Hotel

Apr 28, 2008

At 50 euros a night for a large double room the Acanthe du Temple was money well spent. Booked this place on the basis of the reasonable reviews on TA and was not let down. OK, the wall paper leaves a little to be desired and the whole place is a tad dated, but on a good day, that just adds to the character. And its location means that the old town and all the sights are on your doorstep anyway so no need for sitting in your room wondering what to do. Staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast at 7 euros was perferct and everywhere was very clean. So if you're not too concerend about the decor or don't strive for a room with the latest flat screen TV and monsoon shower then this 2 star town centre hotel is perfect. PS don't be put off be the photos - again, think about character!!

One final thing - NImes itself is well worth a visit. A charming town, easy navigatable, not overrun with hordes of tourists and enough sites, bars and cafes for a few days. we will return
