“Hats off to Laurent!”

Les Vieilles Tours

5 of 5 stars
Washington, DC
Aug 28, 2008

We stayed at Les Vieilles Tours for five nights and had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the Lot region of France. Our first trip from the hotel was to Rocamadour...and Laurent, who runs the hotel with his wife, Cathy, gave us wonderful guidance about how to see this impressive sight with the most pleasure. What he also told us about was the popularity of this site...and having seen it, we were both glad we did and very, very glad that we did not stay in the town itself.
Laurent's advice about where and when to visit different towns and sights continued to be excellent and enormously useful.
Les Vieille Tours itself is located in a splendid area: quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. We stayed in the tour suite which I recommend fully...comfortable bed, modern bath, lovely sitting room where we had drinks with friends who traveled with us. Some of the other rooms, though comfortable, are not as luxurious, but I understand from Laurent that he is in the process of remodeling them.
The food each night was excellent; one of our friends was not a meat eater and Laurent arranged for some special meals.
Finally, there is a lovely swimming pool on site with a super-abundance of fresh, fluffy towels and a nearby shower.
All in all, a wonderful experience.
If you go, don't miss the town of Figeac and the Pech Merle cave.

“Appalled at the poor standards”

Les Vieilles Tours

We originally booked 2 nights in the best available room but due to problems with our itinerary, we found we could only stay 1 night and called 3 days prior to our arrival to inform them. We were offered a suite for the first night. When we arrived and saw the dinner menu, it did not appeal and we advised them we would be eating out
We were taken to a depressing and dirty room in the original stables. The tiles in the bathroom had black milldew, the paint work was dirty and peeling, the bath had black patches where the fibreglass was missing, there was no hook for the shower, no shower curtain, there were hairs in the bath and sink, no soap and the container for the 1 bottle of shampoo was covered in black mould. The rugs at the side of the bed were filthy, the pillows were foam with app 3 cms remaining.
We mentioned to the owner that we had been offered a suite and were quite happy to pay extra. He became extremely aggressive, said he'd already let it to somebody else as we'd changed our booking to 1 night duration and he shouted that we should 'get out' if we didn't like it. We were both extremely tired as we had driven a fair distance otherwise we would have left immediately
I have never encountered such unpleasant behaviour nor stayed in such a dirty hotel. I have no idea why this place has been given a 3* rating when we don't believe it even merits 1*and we were so upset that we have reported this whole matter to the tourist board
I would warn any fellow travellers to be aware of the poor standards of the average room (maybe the suite would have been better) and above all, the attitude of the proprietor

“a little taste of luxury”

Les Vielles Tours is a hidden gem. It is situated in a hamlet, approximately 2 miles from the lovely town of Rocamadour. As the name suggests the property has two towers,we were lucky enough to have a suite in one of them for one night and cannot think of anything which could detract from our experience. The suite had its own living room and a very comfortable bed.Only the sounds of birds could be heard.
From the moment that I booked the accomodation with the owner it was a smooth experience, included in the price was a meal for two at the hotel restaurant. The hotel owner appreciated our poor attempts to speak French, but to assist us in our choice of meal had to hand an English menu. The food was superb, as was the advice on local Cahors wines. The restaurant is small and intimate, all the other guests were French and all ate in the restaraunt. Before taking our meal we had an aperitif on the hotel terrace which overlooks the swimming pool and a beautiful valley.
We booked the hotel as an overnight stay before hiring a gite in the Lot Valley, our experience there made it the perfect start to our holiday and we would return at the drop of a hat

“The perfect place to unwind....”

We dropped by looking for somewhere to stay in Rocamadour expecting them to be booked out at 7.30pm at night, but it was our lucky day! We stayed in a beautifully decorated spacious room overlooking the valley. The views were stunning and it was so quiet we slept the best we had in a long time.
Originally we were only going to stay one night but we decided to stay two and celebrated my husbands birthday there. We ate out on the terrace both nights with the most amazing view and delectable cuisine. Laurent (the owner) even organised a 'happy birthday' note on Grant's plate when we had our dessert.
The pool was gorgeous overlooking the valley and you couldn't help but relax when you were there. The whole place was aimed at making you unwind.
Nothing was a problem for the staff and we were treated like royalty!
We will not forget this gorgeous little retreat and will be back to visit again someday, hopefully soon!

This is one of the best Chateaux hotels we have stayed in over the last few years. From the first contact telephone call we made from the Camargue to finally checking out we were treated as guests, not customers, by the lovely people there.
The rooms are unique, all ground floor in an open and spacious farmyard context. They offer wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, and the swimming pool does the same !
Just off the main Gourdon road out off Rocamadour, the hotel is quiet and isolated, with no trafiic or other noise.
The breakfasts were good but faded into insignificance against the outstanding dinners we had - among the best food we have had in France.
Originally booked for one night, we stayed for three - and will be back !
