“Great cocktails..!”

We stayed here for 3 nights in August on a stay-for-three, pay-for-two nights deal travelling by Eurostar. It is about a 10 minute taxi ride from the station. The bedroom was reasonable large, well appointed and comfortable. The front of house staff were friendly and helpful - most speak very good English but will happily and patiently stay with French if you want to make the effort to speak it.

From the hotel it is about a 600-700mtr walk into the heart of old Lille which has lots of god restaurants and bistros in and in the general area of the main square. The bar/lounge area is fantastic - it is the whole courtyard of the old convent, completely covered over by a very high glass pyramid. The cocktails are superb and they certainly do not stint on the meassures of spirits in the way that some hotels are prone to do. Overall, an excellent hotel, and certainly well priced on the 3-for-2 deal we had.

For lunch, if you like moules/frites, you must try "Aux Moules" in rue Bethune - something of an institution in Lille. (About 300mtr from the east corner off the main square). We thought the best meal we had in the evening was at Alcide, about 50 mtrs down a narrow street from the west corner of ther square - excellent bistro-style restaurant. For a more fine-dining experience try Le Compostelle in rue st Etienne, again only about 100mts from the square in a very narrow street.

“Nice hotel bad bed”

Good location hotel has charm. On third flloor large room but very hard bed and little air through windows. Restaurant lovely but expensive wine, service could of been better for the price we paid.

Would advise not to go to Lille this time of year as lot of places were shut for holiday. Also on Sunday and Monday like we did. 2 days is plenty of time to see what the place has to offer,

“Stifling, disappointing.”

Couvent des Minimes - Alliance Lille

Stayed here for 1 night on a cheapie Eurostar. Having read the good reviews we were sorely disappointed. Our room was very average with hard beds and no English TV channels. The website claims climate control which consists of an old noisy fan in the room. The weather was warm but the room was stifling. Had we booked another night we would have moved hotels. The breakfast is the usual fare but as there is no air con in the public spaces and a glass roof, the sun was blazing down and it was not pleasant. Have stayed in much more comfortable hotels despite the excellent rate from Alpharooms who are always the cheapest. Drinks very overpriced.

Lille is fine for a 1 night break with good restaurants and shopping but not much to do. Beware flat shoes needed, cobbles everywhere.

“Beautiful converted cloisters.”

We have recently returned from a three night stay at this hotel.
The public areas of this hotel are stunning. The conversion from a cloisters is sympathetic and the restored vaulted ceilings are wonderful.
We'd booked two rooms; one benefited from air-conditioning...the other didn't!! This wouldn't normally be an issue in northern France but unfortunately we happened to be there on possibly the hottest three days of the year!! This resulted in hot, uncomfortable nights for two of us. The rooms are clean and comfortable although the beds are rather hard. Tea/coffee making facilities,T.V., a safe and trouser press are standard. The bathrooms are large and the shower was lovely and powerful. Don't rely on the room's hairdryer as it's located in the bathroom and would take an age to dry hair!
The hotel staff are both polite and helpful. They recommended a lovely restaurant (Barbue d'Anvers) and were happy to book tables, taxis etc for us.. The reception staff speak English fluently.
The breakfast offers a range of fresh fruit and fruit juices, cereals, bread and pastries, yoghurts along with bacon, eggs and sausage. They were able to provide soya milk on request.
The hotel bar is a relaxing place to end an evening. The bar staff were attentive but unfortunately the hotel's pianist was on holiday.
The hotel is in a very quiet location but only a short and pleasant walk to the centre of town. It's close to the Citadel and a large municipal park. Lille itself is an interesting place with wonderful architecture. There is an arrray of restaurants and bars, museums, churches and a choice of shops for retail therapy. It's all on the flat but comfortable shoes are recommended as the streets are mainly cobbled.
This hotel was an ideal base to explore Lille and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting the city.

“Great location - shame about the bed!”

Couvent des Minimes - Alliance Lille

Jul 28, 2008

Just returned from a 3 night weekend break at the Couvent des Minimes in Lille. The public areas of the hotel are lovely, and the location is quiet and very central - 5 mins walk to Bois de Boulogne park and zoo and 10 mins stroll to the Grande Place or Musee des Beaux Arts.

Our standard room on the 3rd floor was very hot, and there was no airconditioning - this wouldn't normally be a problem, and wasn't something I'd expected to need in Northern France, but we happened to be there on the hotest weekend of the year and the small desk fan provided just didn't cool the room enough.

The only other problem was the bed - the mattress was incredibly hard and, coupled with the heat, it made it difficult to get a good night's sleep.

However, the service from reception was great, and although I took the opportunity to practice my french all weekend, they were equally happy to switch to English where required.

The breakfast buffet was good, and included plenty of fresh fruit as well as the usual bread, pastries and cereals and a limited cooked breakfast selection.

All in all our stay was fantastic value, booked as part of a package including Eurostar tickets. I would highly recommend this hotel, if it wasn't for the uncomfortable bed, but if you like a firm mattress, you might be ok!
