“Great Location,but.....”

Hotel Churchill

3 of 5 stars
Denver,Co
Sep 29, 2008

KLM Denver....Nice Hotel...but avoid June 21st
The Hotel Churchhill was a very nice stop while traveling in France. The hotel was located right on one of the main streets with shopping and cafes. We found the hotel in a Rick Steves travel guide. The staff was very friendly and courteous. My wife and I have three children, age 6, 9 and 13. We booked 2 rooms adjoining and it worked out real well. The rooms were small but clean and comfortable. Our only complaint was that June 21st is France's beginning of summer festival. There was a zillion people walking the streets and very loud french(grunge music) playing until 3am. The hotel does not have air condtioning so we had to keep our windows open. We did not get much sleep.

We used the hotel as a home base for 3 nights. We had a rental car and traveled around Normandy to see the sights. It was very educational to see the D-Day Beaches and the French countryside. Our 13 year old boy really enjoyed the museums and Omaha Beach.

    • Liked — Great location in town. Very clean rooms and friendly staff.
    • Disliked — No air condtioning. But that was managable. Normandy does not get hot weather often.

“A well run hotel”

Hotel Churchill

4 of 5 stars
Atlanta, GA
Sep 23, 2008

My family stayed at the Hotel Churchill for four nights, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had two double rooms and a single room, and while all were small by American standards, they were plenty spacious. The married owners are veterans of the Hilton Hotel chain, so they know how most tourists expect to see a facility run. The staff were helpful with suggestions on restaurants, and all of their input was accurate. The only staff related snafu was a wake up call that was ordered but never came. According to the owners, 10 bathrooms are scheduled for a complete redo when they close the hotel down at the end of the year. Also, this hotel is not air conditioned, and that does not seem likely to change, so be careful in the summer. The 9 euro breakfast is reasonably priced and offers great variety, but there is a supermarket around the corner if you want to cut some cost or eat on the run. Otherwise, everything you would need in a Bayeux hotel (shopping, restaurants, tourist sites) is in walking distance of the property. I would highly recommend the Churchill to anyone looking for a base to see the Normandy WW II sites and/or Mont st. Michel.

“We love the Churchill”

Hotel Churchill

4 of 5 stars
Stockton, CA.
Sep 21, 2008

A wonderful place to stay for a few days while we visited the WWII invasion beaches. The hotel has no elevator and our room and bathroom were on the small side (by US Standards). The location-on a pedestrian only street-with a car park in the rear was great. We loved sitting outside and watching the people passing by.Breakfast was not included in our room rate, but we ate at the hotel and thought it was quite good.

The staff were great (leaving the hotel to take us across the street to a cafe for a late lunch and sharing stories about the photos from WWII that were on all of the walls).

We did not have time to take the Hotel's minivan tour to Mont San Michel, but it seemed to be popular withthe other guests.

“Very nice but not sure ours was the best room”

Hotel Churchill

4 of 5 stars
Birmingham UK
Sep 15, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Churchill in September 2008 for 4 nights. We really liked the hotel as a base for exploring the beaches and other D-day areas by car. The very ample and safe free carpark at the back of the hotel was easy to use and we never had trouble getting a space. I'm not sure how that would be in the peak seasons because it was pretty full in the shoulder season. Do be sure to check directions because our satnav also sent us to the front door on a pedestrianised street. We did not have Place du Quebec in ours but if you look for the parking near the Tapistry you should be ok.

Monsieur Daniel is wonderful, a real credit to the hotel. We were able to describe for him what we wanted each evening for dinner and he always sent us to just the right places. He is a jewel, and it would be well worth staying there just for his knowledge and experience.

The entrance lobby is very pleasant as is the boutique and so are the stairs. You will use the stairs because there is no lift (elevator). No worry, there are dozens of excellent WWII photos on every wall to keep you interested and amused. That'll slow you down so you're not out of breath.

Breakfast is fresh and tasty, and sufficient. Two kinds of cold cereal (a chocolate muesli and corn flakes), plenty of fresh fruit (no fruit salad), plain yogurt, and a bowl is brought to you with a baguette piece, a croisant, and a pain au chocolat for each person. Jams and honey, etc are on the table or buffet. Fresh coffee, tea, or chocolate brought by the pleasant and competent attendant. More of everything is offered but even I, not a small person, usually found the first round plenty.

Our room, number 206, was up the main staircase to the first floor (2nd to Americans), along a corridor, then up some quite steep and narrow stairs to the only room up those stairs. It is under the eaves and while not small the roof slopes down steeply and my wife and I could only stand under it in about 2/3 the room. There is one very small window high above the double bed, and a larger one in the dormer window. Lighting was adequate (not too much natural light) but I could forsee a problem with air circulation in this room in hot weather. Besides the double bed (quite comfortable) there is a single under the low roof. Good for us to put out stuff but my wife hit her head on the beam. Because of the limited English language programming on the flat screen TV we used our laptop and disks we had brought along. The room was very quiet at night but we noticed we could hear the entry area with the windows open in the early evening.

The bathroom is where this room really could do with an update. Unlike some photos we have seen on TripAdvisor of other rooms, ours had a large but ordinary sink, with taps that work backwards. Push down for on, pull up for off. Eventually you'll find the plug knob behind the tap. Same in the small, sliding door shower cubicle. I'm afraid that the shower hasn't joined the europe wide battle of the showers that we experienced everywhere else in France, Switzerland and Italy this year. It is more like what we used to have in English B&B's a few years ago. I did not think there was sufficient flow to comfortably wash my hair or reliable temperature and I waited until we reached our next hotel. A power shower or a modern shower head would go miles. The bathroom was spacious, and the iron table with plenty of room for everything was a great idea. The only other downside to the bathroom was the toilet paper dispenser. Made of metal and forever losing the end so you have to open it and feed it through again, it was a real loser. I've been more successful in public loos. I've seen photos here of more simple home style ones. Maybe this room is on the list for refurbishment?

So, to sum up: fantastic location, wonderful staff, good nosh, great setting, tough stairs to our room, our room needs to come up to the standards of the rest of the hotel.

Would we stay at the Churchill again? In a heartbeat.

“A Welcoming Small Hotel, Ideally Situated for Tours of WWII Sites”

Hotel Churchill

Sep 14, 2008

The Hotel Churchill appears to be a rather popular hotel, and why not? It's ideally situated, smack dab in the middle of Bayeux, an easy stroll to this pleasant town's two main - and unmissable - sites: the cathedral and Bayeux Tapestry. What's more, the town itself is perfectly situated for excursions to Normandy's countless and compelling D-Day sites, and a day trip to Mont St. Michel is well within reach.

The Churchill itself is a fine, well run hotel. Our two-night stay last August featured a comfortable room, with views of the town's evocative cathedral (especially striking at night). The management at the Churchill is one of the hotel's best features, offering friendly, helpful service. You'll feel welcome as soon as you arrive.

There are several other noteworthy features about the Churchill. The hotel has an attractive breakfast room which doubles as a lounge, with numerous libations on offer. Breakfasts at the Churchill were ample and quite satisfactory, but there is an additional charge. Still, the Churchill provides three-star comfort at reasonable prices. Attached to the hotel is a small and charming gift shop, and this review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the hallways of the hotel, featuring countless framed photos dating from the Battle of Normandy. These were most interesting.

In conclusion, should you be considering a stay in Normandy, do consider the friendly confines of the Hotel Churchill.
