“the perfect place to stay”

Hotel Churchill

5 of 5 stars
roanoke, virginia
Oct 10, 2008

The hotel is first rate and the staff -all fluent in English- are incredibly accomodating. It is charming old private home turned inn; centrally located on the main street the city. We got help with tours, rental cars, directions, places to eat etc. I felt I was leaving family behind when I checked out. Most of the battle field tours pick up right behind the hotel which is most convenient. You can rent a car in Bayeux if so inclined to venture a return to the sites or see more. We did this and found it well worth the extra money.

“Nice hotel, convenient to tours”

Hotel Churchill

Oct 9, 2008

Very helpful staff. Hotel has tours every day to Mont. St. Michel. Battlebus Normandy tours have a pickup a few steps from the hotel entrance. The Battlebus American Highlights tour guide was great but we didn't spend enough time at the American cemetery. No hotel elevator. Standard size rooms, very clean. Breakfast is ok but not worth 9 euros per person by american standards. If you are planning a Normandy and Mont. St. Michel tour this hotel is a convenient location.

“Wonderful and charming”

Hotel Churchill

5 of 5 stars
Frederick, MD, USA
Oct 4, 2008

My husband and I spent 5 nights at the Hotel Churchill using it as home base to see a bit of the Normandy Region from September 1-5, 2008. The hotel is centrally located in Bayeux which is a lovely town to explore on foot. The staff was friendly, professional and were very tolerant of my limited French which I wanted to practice. Breakfast was more than adequate served nicely in a bright and cheerful dining area. Our room was very clean and had a great view of the cathedral. The hotel provides a van with driver who took us to Mont St-Michel. As we did not rent a car, having that opportunity through the hotel was very nice. The hotel also has a large gift shop - the caramels are yummy! We had the best time and felt like we left friends behind when we continued our vacation.

“Great Location,but.....”

Hotel Churchill

3 of 5 stars
Denver,Co

KLM Denver....Nice Hotel...but avoid June 21st
The Hotel Churchhill was a very nice stop while traveling in France. The hotel was located right on one of the main streets with shopping and cafes. We found the hotel in a Rick Steves travel guide. The staff was very friendly and courteous. My wife and I have three children, age 6, 9 and 13. We booked 2 rooms adjoining and it worked out real well. The rooms were small but clean and comfortable. Our only complaint was that June 21st is France's beginning of summer festival. There was a zillion people walking the streets and very loud french(grunge music) playing until 3am. The hotel does not have air condtioning so we had to keep our windows open. We did not get much sleep.

We used the hotel as a home base for 3 nights. We had a rental car and traveled around Normandy to see the sights. It was very educational to see the D-Day Beaches and the French countryside. Our 13 year old boy really enjoyed the museums and Omaha Beach.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Great location in town. Very clean rooms and friendly staff.
    • Disliked — No air condtioning. But that was managable. Normandy does not get hot weather often.

“A well run hotel”

Hotel Churchill

4 of 5 stars
Atlanta, GA
Sep 23, 2008

My family stayed at the Hotel Churchill for four nights, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had two double rooms and a single room, and while all were small by American standards, they were plenty spacious. The married owners are veterans of the Hilton Hotel chain, so they know how most tourists expect to see a facility run. The staff were helpful with suggestions on restaurants, and all of their input was accurate. The only staff related snafu was a wake up call that was ordered but never came. According to the owners, 10 bathrooms are scheduled for a complete redo when they close the hotel down at the end of the year. Also, this hotel is not air conditioned, and that does not seem likely to change, so be careful in the summer. The 9 euro breakfast is reasonably priced and offers great variety, but there is a supermarket around the corner if you want to cut some cost or eat on the run. Otherwise, everything you would need in a Bayeux hotel (shopping, restaurants, tourist sites) is in walking distance of the property. I would highly recommend the Churchill to anyone looking for a base to see the Normandy WW II sites and/or Mont st. Michel.
