“Great basic hotel”

We spent a Saturday night here as a break in the journey between Brittany and Calais. The rooms were basic, but comfortable, clean and had some character. The hotel was centrally located, and not too difficult to find, as it is signposted from a few streets away. We didn’t find it at all noisy; the bar that is located beneath it having closed down.

Breakfast was fresh bread and croissants and was good and there was as much of it as required. The proprietor was helpful and attentive without being pushy.

Overall it is a good simple hotel, very centrally located and at a great price.

One tip - you can park in the underground car park in the square that is about 100m from the hotel, however if you want you get out on a Sunday, all of the entrances are locked. This caused us, and another family, some panic as we had visions of waiting until Monday to get our car out. However there is a pedestrian entrance to the car park near the main car entrance. You have to use your car park ticket as the entrance key to the door and then use the automatic payment machine when inside.

This is a central hotel parking in underground car park is 8 euroes a few yards away. The room was clean and staff welcoming after a long drive.Walking to places of interest and restaurants is easy. triple room consisted of a double with en suite and an adjoining single with shower and washbowl. Bedding was spotless. Breakfast was friendly in the morning giving chance to meet other tourists. Never heard anyone complain about the hotel. So go ahead book it .

“A nice stay”

Hotel de la Fontaine

For the price we paid, we got a very reasonable deal. The hotel can be difficult to find, it's not far from the Republique parking garage, and it's not much to look at from the outside, but I would stay there again. The receptionist is very nice and her English was very good. The room was not terribly big, had a TV and was clean.

When I booked this room, I forgot to consider that I had a train leaving Caen at 6:40 that evening and so had no place to leave my luggage between check out and the train departing (I was very much looking foward to visiting Caen). Fortunately, the receptionist had no problem holding our luggage for the day in their private room while we did our sightseeing. This was a huge help and was very happy that they were willing to do this for me.

De la Fontaine hotel was wonderful. I stayed there two nights in July while visiting the Normandy area. The room was clean, comfortable, had a tv, double bed, private bathroom. There is free wi-fi, if you have your own laptop. It was in a relatively safe area, although you should stop by the tourist information place about 2-3 blocks away in order to have them draw a map for you to get to the hotel. Right near the tram, the buses, restaurants, supermarket. Owners are great, charming and helpful.

The only thing about Caen, is that it is not the city to go to in order to get all the Normandy Beach tours. Caen is a great city, and has a decent enough memorial museum to World War II, but its very narrowly focused. I ended up taking a train to Bayeaux to catch a tour with Battle Bus - IT WAS AWESOME.
