“NIce room and good view...”

Hotel le Cardinal

4 of 5 stars
Middleton, Wisconsin
Nov 2, 2007

We spent one night at the Hotel Cardinale in Rouen on our way to Bayeux. It was about a 15 minute walk from the train station - downhill - and located on the cathedral square. Our room (#10) was a larger than average corner room with a nice view of the Cathedral. The room was bright, cheery, and very clean. The staff was very accommodating.
If you had a car, parking could be an issue. We picked up a rental car in the morning and were able to find a temporary parking place very close so we could load our luggage. Rouen also has a very simple Metro that could be used to return to the train station.
Also be aware that Rouen virtully closes down about 7 p.m. - at least in October. We found the streets pretty quiet in the evenings and you had to look a bit to find a restaurant for dinner.

“Average hotel in excellent location”

This is a tiny 2 star hotel on the very same square the famous Rouen cathedral is located.

I had a problem with reservation, because my email with credit card details was lost and the room with a cathedral view was occupied, so I was only offered a family room with a side street view. That was a pity, because the view on the cathedral square should be marvellous.

Actually nothing was good except cleanliness and great location (not too little, though)

Internet access did not work that day, moving luggage is complicated as you cannot park near the hotel (pedestrian square). Reception closes at 9 PM. Our room was next to the breakfast room (hence noisy in the morning).

Do not miss the "from Monet to pixels" - cathedral lighting show which should go every night until September - this is one of the most surreal events I've ever seen in my life.

“Best hotel in Rouen!”

Our honeymoon in France would not have been the same if we hadn't stopped for a night in Rouen! This little town is magical. We walked into the hotel and luckily they had one room left. We grabbed it and it was a steal for 57 euros a night. It is in the best location, directly across the most beautiful cathedral I have ever seen, even better than Notre Dame in my opinon. The rooms are simple but very clean and large by european standards. The bed was very comfortable. You have a little balcony from where you can see the cathedral. The owner is very helpful and nice. At night, they have a light show on the cathedral and it is simply amazing! Stay here if you go to Rouen!

“Charming Hotel in Charming City”

Delightful hotel located close to the Cathedral in Rouen. Clean comfortable rooms. Large bathroom. Very reasonable room rates. Breathtaking view from our room. We had a room for four people and everyone was comfortable. Nice breakfast. Very helpful staff! Because the hotel is located in the pedestrian area of Rouen, it is challenging to access and we ended up parking a few blocks away. However, this is a minor inconvenience. Rouen is a beatiful city with great shopping and restaurants. Fewer tourists than Paris and very French!

“Good winter or shoulder season hotel”

Hotel le Cardinal

My wife and I stayed in a 2nd floor corner room with one side facing the cathedral. We paid 60 Euros/night for the room. The hotel staff was friendly and very helpful when they were available. We arrived on a Sunday which can be difficult since the hotel is minimally manned on that day.

Our room was relatively small by U.S. standards and I think average by European standards. Previous commenters made reference to the lighting of the cathedral. Indeed it occurs and it is extremely bright. For a minute I thought I was above the Arctic circle but the hotel installed very heavy light tight curtains. They kept the light out very well.

The room was a little spartan in decor but I guess I'd have to say that I wasn't there to go sightseeing in the room. I did notice that there is no air handling of any type for the room I was in so if someone were to stay in the summer, it might be a little uncomfortable. But since we were there in February, it was just fine.
Would I recommend this hotel to someone else? Sure but with the caveat that it would be best during the winter months.
