“Avoid the rooms facing the Cathedrale”

The hotel is reasonably priced and the rooms are comfortable. I stayed here because my other hotel had misplaced my reservation so I did not have my pick of rooms. The rooms facing the cathedrale are quite loud at night. In the summer there is a sound and light show that goes until around 11pm. In the early morning you can hear all the trucks making their deliveries. unfortunatly the room does not have air conditioning so closing the windows is not an option, although that does not drown out the outside noise. The drapes do not help in keeping out the light. I would not stay here again unless I could be guaranteed a quiet room. The hotel owner is quite friendly, however after 9 pm there is no one at the front desk.

“Monet couldn't have asked for a better view”

We arrived from Paris by train on a very hot day without a reservation. The hotel was easy to find. Just look for the Cathedral and there it is. You could not be closer. The only room available was their family room which was quite large with a cross breeze and a fabulous view, a large bathroom but no shower. Even though it was over the cafes downstairs, the noise died out by 11 so it was not a problem for sleeping. The next day they moved us into a room with a shower, which we prefer. Smaller but still with that great view and much less money (not that room #1 was too expensive-both were very reasonable and a fantastic value). The breakfasts were among the best we had on our trip. The staff was very helpful and extremely pleasant. We loved dining out in Rouen. Fabulous restaurants including the one that Julia Child raves about in her biography - La Couronne. All in all, a very pleasant experience.

“Mediocre Hotel in a Good Location in a Mediocre City”

Right next to the cathedral, so central to the main (only?) attraction of Rouen and shopping, dining, etc. Can't beat the location in Rouen, but we didn't like Rouen itself, so our view of the hotel may be distorted.

Great location also meant difficult parking -- we walked 5 blocks from a garage with luggage, though we probably could've been a bit closer. The service was fine. The room was fairly clean by French standards. The beds and linens were tired, which is what we were after a fitful night of sleep. We had a balcony room but the plastic furniture and plastic green carpet made it all feel cheap. The hotel manager on duty during the day spoke good English but no one else (i.e., night clerk) did.

Bottom line: if you have to stay in Rouen, this is a decent option, but we won't be going back and wouldn't recommend anyone go out of their way for it...

“Good Location - Bad Bed”

Hi we are just back from an Easter trip and stayed in the Hotel Cardinal for two nights. It was clean and the breakfast was good - location is perfect too. BUT.. the bed was horrible, lumpy and hard - after one night I wanted to move but knew everywhere would be full so we stayed. Guess sometimes you get what you pay for!

“Modest Hotel - Good Value”

Hotel le Cardinal

The location of this hotel is excellent in relation to the rest of the town. Our room was plain and a very small triple size, but it had a wonderful view of the cathedral. Staff were very friendly and spoke fairly good English. We did have our own shower, but it was my understanding that not all of the rooms are equipped with one. Please be sure to ask. The hotel itself was quiet, but outside it became quite noisy periodically throughout the night from people in the streets. Keeping the windows shut did seem to help.

Additionally, the hotel is a bit difficult to find and parking is a challenge. The hotel cannot be seen from the road and it does not have its own lot. They did provide discounted parking at a garage located at Vielle Tour, which was not too far away; however, the lot was full when we arrived. After unsuccessful attempts to find overnight parking elsewhere, we finally sat and waited at the gate of the Vielle Tour parking garage until a space became available. Fortunately, this took almost no time at all.

Overall, the hotel was modest, but clean with adequate amenities. Although we would have enjoyed a larger room in a more quiet location, the value was excellent and the staff personable.
