“A hotel for non demanding humans - kind proprietors and staff”

Alive Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Somerset, England
Aug 30, 2007

This hotel is basic - yes - with tiny bathrooms yes - but for those not spoiled by aircon etc, and whose priority is to explore the wonderful old town - it is perfect. You can walk to the famous Cathedral in less than 10 minutes. Stacks of cafes, shops and of course, atmosphere. The lady who runs the hotel could not be more helpful - her surname is Angel & she lives up to it. Such a friendly staff. Helped us practise our french with much good humour. I shall return. Oh, and there's easy parking too.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The location - so easy to walk into the old historic town
    • Disliked — Tiny loo - although I am the size of a small continent!

“great value for money and friendly too!”

Alive Hotel

The welcome was wonderful. We hadn't booked but were able to get a room - after driving in circles around the one way system. The price is much better than the other hotels; it is very well situated and the staff are very friendly. The local restaurants were pointed out to me on a map and categorised by food type, there are many within walking distance. Decor is typical for a French hotel in this price band.
The hotel has a small enclosed car park at rear - it is advisable to book this in advance. There wasn't room for us in the car park but a member of staff moved his car from the on street parking so that we could park nearby - free evenings and on Sunday. As soon as a space became available in the car park we were given it.

“Badly needs upgrading”

Arrived at the hotel and they denied all knowledge of the booking which had been made a month earlier. They had spare rooms anyway so we were able to check in. The room was very jaded and smelt musty although to be fair the bedding was reasonably clean. The bathroom was extremely smelly and also cramped.

On the plus side it was a quiet area and the staff were fairly helpful and friendly. If you are on a tight budget then this may be ok for you however I am sure we could have done far better without spending too much more.

“Value for money - but tired”

We stayed here on a short break in Rouen, not our first choice, but other hotels were already booked. On the plus side the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was quiet and the beds clean and comfortable and the hotel was within walking distance of Rouen town centre. Unfortunately the room and hotel decor was very dated and a bit dingy, the room generally needed some attention. The ensuite was small, poorly lit and suffered from mould. Towels were clean and changed daily, though. A value-for-money hotel - but be prepared to make some allowances.

    • Liked — Quiet location. friendly staff, clean beds and linen
    • Disliked — Run down room, small and mouldy ensuite bathroom

“Convenience over 'comforts' wins out”

Alive Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Denver, Colorado
May 29, 2007

I had read a couple of reviews before booking this hotel, and could only find it listed on venere.com, so finally 'bit the bullet' and took it. The price was far less than other hotels in the area and we liked the idea of off-street parking. We had troubles finding the hotel as there were no directions when we booked.
Our room was on the 5th floor and lift only went to the 4th but it turned out okay. There were a large number of teens staying there, so it was quieter where they put us. Room was not the greatest, but I paid for convenience and kept telling myself that. Left the car parked the entire time (3 nites) and walked everywhere. Lots of variety of restaurants nearby and a laundromat also.
The husband made the craissants and when we left they gave us a loaf of bread to take. They were so nice, and they were always trying to be accommodating. (They offered to move us after the teens left, and when the lift broke the last nite, they offered to move us again. It was easier to just stay where we were but when the lift broke the husband did carry down the luggage.)
We were there over Easter weekend so other places charged a premium but this place didn't.
(senior couple) (We spent 13 nites in northern France and the rooms were all small, with the same bathroom (tight!!) but this had the nicest employees.)

    • Disliked — tiny bathroom and glass (opaque, but still...) door
