My husband and I just spent two nights last week (unfortunately not more) at this most delightful and enchanting chateau in Saumur; we had just before stayed near Amboise to visit the chateaux in that area, east of Tours, and then drove west to Saumur to tour Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau... this chateau has been lovingly restored to the highest level of quaity with exceptional attention to detail - if you really appreciate fine taste, this will not disappoint! From the moment you enter the electric gates, you perceive that you have a special experience awaiting you; the common areas (formal living room, dining room, entry hall with professional floral arrangement) exude an refined elegance from days past that draws you in, very relaxing and calming...not stuffy or "museum-like" at all; we also appreciated the fact that there is an elevator for those not wanting to use the (gorgeous)staircase each time you leave and enter... the charming and bright breakfast room on the lower level was a welcome delight each morning and the food and presentation excellent... the landscaping is lovely and the grounds are attractive to stroll...Saumur has great restaurants (they will recommend the best value/quality ones) and is very charming to wander and explore... a great launching spot for discovering Loire wine producers as well of course as visiting the area's chateaux... don't miss this one.. the pricing is fair and totally worth it ... and the host and hostess and their dog are wonderful!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here for three nights in May. The chateau has been restored by its owners and it was truly a labor of love--grand, elegant and immensely comfortable. Our room and bath were spacious and beautifully decorated. The large, well-appointed bath was perfect for luxuriating. We especially appreciated the enthusiastic nightly greeting by their house dog, Uno (not allowed in guests quarters). Breakfast was satisfying and included breads, fruit, yogurt, cereals, hot beverages...

The owners were very helpful and accomodating; suggesting sites worth seeing or skipping, scheduling dinner reservations, and even offering to pick us up from the restaurant if it began to rain.

We highly recommend Chateau De Verrieres.

We wanted a stay in France away from the daily grind of life and to be able to recharge our batteries in luxurious surrounds , and that is exactly what we achieved. The Chateau and the owners welome you when you book, when you arrive and when you leave.Ever attentative but never intrusive , every thing and anything is done to ensure your stay in their home and in their country is a pleasent, fullfilling and memorable experience.
The rooms are just sheer French indulgence, the bathroom as luxurious as could be imagined, the decoration decadent but complimentary, the Chateau oozes charm and opoluence of a bygone age.
Must see when you are there is the Cadre Noir, even if you are not an equine fundi , you will be in awe of these wonderful creatures and the devotion to them. The area is for the very fact you are in the Loire, well provided for by wine farms , which Thierey the owner will only be to pleased to direct you to, Saumur with it's wonderful cafes and restaurants, or just sit in the gardens of the Chateau as time is measured by the turn of the page of that book you always wanted to read.
The Chateau is easy to find , central to everything both by foot or by car.
Must mention the dog, when the electric gates open, do not worry as my wife did, that he will leave the grounds of the Chateau. We will be remembered as that odd English/South African couple who waited for the gates to close behind us before we went on our way thus ensureing the Chien had not got out - why would it, when it's home is the Chateau.

“Romantic & wonderful”

Chateau De Verrieres

Aug 14, 2007

We stayed at Chateau Verrieres in early August, the hotel is very elegant and comfortable and the welcome from the owners and Uno the dog is very warm, they do everything possible to make you feel at home and all really lovely.
Unfortunately I got sick on the way to France from England, so arrived and went straight to bed, but they could not have been kinder and looked after me so well. As a result I got to know our very beautiful room well, it was right over the main door of the chateau with 10 foot double glass doors out to a small balcony and a wonderful free standing bath - I felt like a character from a romantic novel swooning and being ill in such palatial surroundings! We cannot recommend this enough and also really enjoyed Saumur.

Chateau De Verrieres

We stayed at Chateau de Verrieres for 2 nights in July 2007 and had a fabulous experience. All the previous reviews on this place are correct. This place is seriously grand and elegant, and you feel that you are living with a French aristocratic family. It’s the most opulent hotel I have stayed in in France. It has been recently re-furbished to a very high standard in true château style. The hotel sits in beautiful grounds and you would not believe you are in the centre of a town. It is well located just on the outskirts of the town centre and within easy walking distance. As you enter the hotel you see a beautiful grand staircase in front of you and a sumptuous lounge and dining room either side of the staircase. Check in was very easy and you are made very welcome by the hosts who show you to your room. We stayed in Room XVIII on the second floor. The hotel has a lift so there is no lugging of your cases up the grand staircase. Although you can lock yourself in your room at night, there is no key to your room. The hosts want you to feel you are ’family’ and say that there are no need for keys at this hotel. The bathroom was spacious and beautiful, and supplied with big, thick, white towels. This was the sort of place that, when you leave, you would not take any unused toiletries as you feel you would be taking it from a member of your family. Our room was beautiful, well equipped with lovely big bed, coffee/tea making facilities, safe, phone, tv and mini-bar. It was very roomy, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast is taken in a light airy basement room. We did not take dinner at the hotel. Parking in the grounds is very secure with electronic gates. It was lovely to sit out or walk around the beautiful gardens.
While visiting Samur, you must have dinner in Auberge Saint Pierre, in the centre of town. We visited here on both nights. The place has great character and good atmosphere, the staff are very friendly and hospitable, the food is very good, beautifully presented and very good value. Try the briochette of magret du canard or the roast veal. They have some lovely desserts and a good selection of cocktails, They also have a good selection of local wines. You must try their very unusual walnut wine. They suggest it as an aperitif but I think it makes a great dessert wine, especially with their walnut ice cream dessert..
