“Best hotel fof our 2 week stay in Provence”

Grand Hotel Mercure Aix en Provence Roi Rene

4 of 5 stars
Ft. Lauderdale
Oct 8, 2006

This was the most pleasantly tourist oriented hotel that we stayed in . Good sized room, great comfy bed, and nice bathroom with large fluffy towels. Had a mini bar, but we put or own wine in to chill. KUDOS for BBC and CNN,,,it was greatly appreciated. Aix is wonderful, but we stayed here for 2 nights and it was enough IMO. The halls could use a bit of updating, and the carpet in the rooms needs a little TLC, but we were VERY comfortable there, anf that was the most important thing to us.

“Nice and adequate for a week's stay”

Grand Hotel Mercure Aix en Provence Roi Rene

The hotel was booked for us by a travel company providing world wide college alumni group tours - this one for a week's exploration of the Provence (thus we can't comment on the actual costs). For this purpose, it was well located - within easy walking for town attractions and within one or one-and-a-half hours bus ride (or drive) to many of the region's important sites. Having stayed in other European hotels, we found the room above our expectations with a good, firm bed (two twins together to form a king), nice desk, adequate room for storage (though only a few hangers), fairly well-stocked bathroom with separate toilet room (bathroom provided robes and slippers). Maid service OK, sometimes forgot to leave wash cloths but a call to housekeeping quickly solved that issue. Most TV channels in French but also had CNN and BBC in English. Breakfast buffet quite good with choices of cereals, choices of fruit and juices, some meats, scrambled eggs or a cook-your-own egg cooker. Rooms clean and our floor was all non-smoking (as is the restaurant). Reception friendly and spoke English well. Pool a bit cool but once in you are OK.

    • Tips/Secrets: — request inside (poolside) room - others in our group mentioned outside rooms as noisy

“Fine for a short stay”

We stayed four nights at the Roi Rene for a conference, so again we were staying on OPM (other people's money). Our room was adequate--window overlooked the pool, but no balcony. A/C was fine. The bed was reasonably comfortable, except for the divide down the middle (it was two twin mattresses put together to make a king). Carpeting was stained, but otherwise things were clean enough.
The desk staff was extremely helpful--especially Murielle. She booked a TGV ticket for us and helped with restaurant reservations. All the staff spoke English well, and the location is great--three blocks or so to Cours Mirabeau and the old city just beyond.
If I were staying on my nickel, I might investigate one of the hotels in the old quarter, but really, this was just fine. The pool was a nice touch, but very cold for my American thermostat.

“Good selection for short stay”

We got this Hotel through the tourist office. Our room was standard but good size, tv, mini bar, street not too loud (slept with window open). Bedlinen clean, Bathroom clean but worn off, with primitive plastic curtain (2 star level) but towells very good quality, even 2 bathropes and flip-flops for going down to the (outside and heated) pool. There is in-the- house parking (payed 14 Eur extra) but first class service to help with luggage. Breakfast was a deception. Beside the good service and the possibility to jump in the pool between your visits to town, it was conveniently located within short distance to the main museums and attractions. The Hotel is ok for a short stay.

“Worn out hotel, but good location”

Grand Hotel Mercure Aix en Provence Roi Rene

Old hotel needs to be renovated. Hallway smells of stale smoke. Seems to be popular with businessmen. Small rooms. Toilet stall is in separate room opposite of shower room/tub. Buffet food is ok. Bathroom and fixtures is also older. Good location for walking to main streets.
If you stay at this hotel, expect a 2 or 3 star quality hotel room. But room was fairly clean and staff was helpful. English was not a problem at the front desk. The hotel was supposed to have renovated the rooms Dec 2005, but no renovation has started yet.
No English channels on TV.
