We stayed in Hotel Medieval for two nights after booking a room the night before (we got real lucky to get a room as the theater festivel was in full swing) We got a double with shower for 76 euros per night.

Rooms were nice except for dim lighting and a briefly noisy neighbor across the alley. (It was only a daytime issue but get a courtyard room if you can't stand any noise.) Above-average room size and big closets.

Hotel has nice character as it was an old cardinals Mansion once. Breakfast service was average.

Front Desk service was above average for Europe as they were helpful and friendly.

No Elevator available but this only is an issue for disabled people as hotel only had 4 floors. Adds character in a way I think.

Parking is available in a nearby lot but driving in Avignon is a nightmare beyond anything I ever experienced. It is a pedestrian city that is very car-unfriendly (a good thing for tourists) so take the train or bus here.

I stayed at this hotel for three days from December 14-16. I took advantage of the Bon-Weekend en Avignon promotion which runs through March 2008. Anyway, back to the hotel--the location is about 5-10 minutes from the Avignon Centre Sncf station. It is extremely close to the Palais des Popes--a few minutes up a street in the back. The room was standard size--I stayed in a single; I found it to be a tad small. There was an ensuite toilet and shower and the hotel provides for a free hair dryer if you ask for it. The main reason to stay at this hotel is the great service at the hotel by the personnel. When I first arrived at the hotel Andre greeted me enthusiastically and asked someone to carry luggage to my run. Feeling famished, I asked Andre for a restaurant suggestion. He suggested the Les Caveau au Theatre. Then he helped make a reservation over the phone and gave me a card of the hotel, which enabled me to recieve a free apertif. There is also Mike, an Englishman who helped me with whatever inquires I had, such as where the laundromat was. He was also very friendly and charming. Only negatives about the hotel are the lack of restaraunts and the size of the room.

A friend and I spent five nights here in October. We arrived at about 8.00 on a Sunday night after having rejected the hotel at which we had booked as being too dingy, dirty and smelling of cigarette smoke. Michael could not have been more helpful and was able to accomodate us. The hotel is not easy to find but once there it is surprisingly easy to find one's way around Avignon. It is a charming city and well worth a visit. It is convenient for Aix, Arles, Nimes and the Carmargue all of which are well worth visiting.
The hotel is very old and quite charming. The Staff are very pleasant and most helpful. I hope to return to Avignon for a holiday and if so would certainly stay at Le Medieval

Hotel Medieval

We stayed here, choosing Avignon as our base to visit a limited part of southern france.
Location: Avignon is a major citry in southern france, takes 1-1.5hrs to drive from Marseille (hired car). It larger compared to other towns such as Nimes, Arles, but smaller than Aix. We were able to visit the towns previously listed, including Carpentras, Isle D'l Sorge, Fontaine de Vaucluse, St. Remy during our 5 day stay. Avignon has a number of shops, a beautiful park garedens, lots of restaurants including some Michelin recommended and a michelein star one.

Hotel: This is in an old building, ground floor is reception and dining area, with a common room/library. I believe there are 2 further floors. The reception service was fantastic, English speaking and very courteous booking restaurants. This is a 2 star hotel.

Room: We asked for a quiet room and were therfore given a room facing a inner courtyard. The room is typical of European rooms, single room (small) with a double bed. OK mattress. A safe is included, cupboard space, a small table and two chairs. Our room had a kitchenette which has a stove and fridge. We were able to use the fridge. There is a powerful airconditioner, which is noisy at night (but u get use to it) and also a heater bar. In september, we had to use the air-con one night and was good. The room decorations are very simple, and the lighting could be improved in the room ( maybe being in the courtyard we lacked natural light ) - more lamps would have been good. Room cleaned daily - well cleaned.

Bathroom: The bathroom is ok size, toilet located in a small corner and shower average. Water always hot, pressure poor, and under a timing system where you had to depress is again after 1 minute (guess it saves on water). Sink as well and toiletires provided everyday.

Car Park: no car park for this small hotel, but we were able to park at the big Les Halles car park( massive 7 storey). You get a discount which turns out to be max of 7 euros/24 hrs.

Breakfast - we tried b/f one morning. we asked for it to be brought to our room. A selection of baguette and criossants, juices, coffee, jams for 7euros per person. If you have it downstairs, you can have some more including options of cereal too.

Price: we paid 63 euros per night (including tax) for a double. There are a lot more expensive places in Avignon, but being on budget we thought this was a great place and would recommend again. Servce at the reception was exceptional ( very impressed - always willing to help).

Stayed here for three nights in May. Hotel is in nice spot, a few minutes walk from the Palais des Papes down a quiet small alley. We got a taxi here from the TGV station, which didn't cost too much. Might be difficult to find if you do not know the area. Rooms were a reasonable size. Quite old furniture though, but comfortable and the bathroom was larger than most we came across in Europe. There was a small kitchenette, however the fridge did not work. Which was dissapointing because we were wanting to use it. The reception staff were really lovely. Liked having a chat and advised us on where to go and things to avoid in Avignon. Despite the rooms being a bit old and drab, the price was reasonable compared to other hotels.
