“good for one night wouldn't stay longer”

Hotel le Medieval

Sep 29, 2008

We stayed at hotel medieval for one night. I would recommend the hotel if you are just passing through avignon for a night but I wouldn’t want to stay longer then that. The location is very good. And the price is right. Easy walking distance from the train station and close to shopping, restaurants and sights. Also the staff are quite friendly. The hotel common areas are nice but the room is not that welcoming. The décor is outdated and because of the dark flooring and dim lighting the room just didn’t feel that comfortable. Also the bathroom, though it was clean and had a bathtub, had a funny mildew smell. I think just from dampness. I had to keep the door open while I was in there because of the smell. In terms of food we ate at o sole mio which is a pizza place down the street. The two of us shared a huge pizza and salad, both were very good and affordable. To visit the palais des papes we went on a Sunday and it was free which saved us close to 20€. I don’t know at what dates they allow free entry but worth checking out.

“Great reception handy location”

OK I'll be honest, tried to stay at the Hotel D' Europe but the only affordable rooms had gone, ran around panicking that I'd left it too late and all rooms were gone (French Bank Hols) found Medieval by chance in this Maze of a town.

Met by delightful front of house manager with the most English of accents on his perfect French.

Very amenable and helpful as was his opposite number the next day.

Room was fine, breakfast was a little disappointing, I should have gone to a local bar as I usually do.

“Very pleasant staff, room disappointing”

Hotel le Medieval

Aug 13, 2008

Extremely pleasant staff with excellent English and manner, fantastic location right in the centre of the beautiful city of Avignon. The hotel itself it in a really lovely building that was once a cardinal's palace. The courtyard and entrance are really 3 star, or perhaps even more. The room itself was a real disappointment. Very 70's decor. The air con was extremely noisy, and we couldn't really keep the window open because of the noise from the apartments opposite - loud TV and throwing up. Not ideal. If the owners could just update the rooms they'd have a really splendid hotel.

“Fabulously Helpful Staff”

A friend and I needed a room for only one night as we were returning from the South of France on our way to Geneve. Michael was extremely helpful and friendly on check in and asked if we'd like to see the room first. It was small as is usually the case for 2 star European hotels, but clean and had ample closets and the bathroom was large by European standards. There is no lift and we were on the 2nd (European) floor. We decided to have the breakfast and it was much larger, a bagette, croissant, cereal, yogurt, coffee etc and the attendant was pleasant. If you know Avignon, Hotel le Medieval is located on a narrow street only a few short blocks from the main square Place de l'Horloge (with lots of overpriced tourist restaurants, near the carousel) . You should eat at a really wonderful restaurant L'epicerie on Place Saint Pierre. Ask for directions. We felt Hotel de Medieval was a very good value.

We stayed in Hotel Medieval for two nights after booking a room the night before (we got real lucky to get a room as the theater festivel was in full swing) We got a double with shower for 76 euros per night.

Rooms were nice except for dim lighting and a briefly noisy neighbor across the alley. (It was only a daytime issue but get a courtyard room if you can't stand any noise.) Above-average room size and big closets.

Hotel has nice character as it was an old cardinals Mansion once. Breakfast service was average.

Front Desk service was above average for Europe as they were helpful and friendly.

No Elevator available but this only is an issue for disabled people as hotel only had 4 floors. Adds character in a way I think.

Parking is available in a nearby lot but driving in Avignon is a nightmare beyond anything I ever experienced. It is a pedestrian city that is very car-unfriendly (a good thing for tourists) so take the train or bus here.
