“A beautiful bed and breakfast experience”

La Banasterie

Jul 23, 2008

'La Banasterie' is a brilliant bed and breakfast located in the heart of Avignon. We had a fantastic stay there - our room was spacious, quiet, clean and charming. It is the kind of place where no detail is missed - from the yummy chocolates on arrival to the generous continental breakfast.

Located around the corner from the 'Palais des Papes' in the middle of the old city, there are heaps of great restaurants nearby. Don't even TRY parking near the hotel, go straight to the parking at 'Les Halles' just 200-300 metres away. Very happy with our stay and we'd recommend it to anyone.

“Belle Banasterie”

La Banasterie

Jun 7, 2008

On arrival we met the owner who gave us a choice of rooms as there was another one available. We chose a room on one of the upper levels, after deciding the room on the top level might be too warm and a little too dark. The building is located in the centre of the old part of the city (it is an 11th century building), and as such is a warren of rooms and staircases which we thought charming and very Provencal, although those stairs to your room may not be best tackled after a few bottles of wine, late at night! The room was on the smallish side, but perfectly adequate and comfortable and most certainly clean. The bathroom was spacious but unfortunately there was no proper shower, just a period style shower attachment at the side of the bath which in the heat was a pain showering twice a day with!
Breakfast was always lovely - although not mad on the coffee (we are coffee buffs) - and gave us the chance to chat to the owner Jean-Michel (rather interesting and gentle man).
The location of this place is FANTASTIC! Down a narrow street at the back of the Palais du Papes, it is very central and means you can easily walk around Avignon from there and we also found it quiet despite being so central - although be prepared to be woken by the bells ringing!
We enjoyed our stay and thought it the ideal and typically french style of accommodation. The living room area is comfortable and relaxing too. I would say that I think there is potential for it to be uncomfortably hot as there is no air-conditioning that we could see.

“Perfect experience: charming room + location, location, location”

La Banasterie

ROOM: We stayed in the Quazequotal (sp?) room on the upper floor. There is a bed in one room, with a second twin bed in an adjacent "sleeping porch". The room was absolutely charming with plenty of space. We also had a private outdoor roof-top patio. We had also considered Le Meridiene, and were very glad we chose this property instead. The breakfasts were charmingly presented and suited our tastes.
GUIDE: Our host and hostess were very helpful in making recommendations about options for guides while we were in the area. We ended up working with a woman named Laurence who was fantastic. She met us at the TGV (train) station and absolutely enhanced our stay in Provence. We would highly recommend her. She is a bit more expensive than some other guides, but we felt this was reasonable given her professionalism, knowlege, reliability, and comfortable car. She is a personal friend of the owners of La Banasterie, so you can get in contact with her through them, or she is listed with "Privateguidesineurope.com" .
RESTAURANTS: Our favorite was "La Forchette" (sp?)--translation to English is The Fork. A reservation is definitely recommended. It appeared that a number of locals dine here.
LOCATION: Could not be better in our opinion. The B&B is on a charming street. Parking is some distance, but that is because Avignon allows very little parking within the walls of the city.
COOKING CLASS: We took a "hands on" cooking class at Le Meridien hotel. It was very enjoyable.
ITINERARY: We were on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Provence. Day one, we arrived mid morning on the TGV from Paris. Laurence (our guide) met us at the train station, took us to La Banisterie to drop off our luggage, and then on to sight see around St. Remy, etc. The next day we spent in Avignon exploring the area. Our cooking class was that evening. Our final day, Laurence met us at the B&B and took us for some more sight seeing in Provence before delivering us to to TGV back to Paris. Having our guide pick us up and return us to the train station was very convenient.
TRAIN: Note that the TGV station is a few miles outside of Avignon. There is another train station in Avignon that services the slower trains. We found it faster to arrive via TGV and arrange transportation (guide, taxi, etc.) from the TGV station.

“We loved La Banasterie, can't wait to return!”

La Banasterie

Jan 22, 2008

We stayed at La Banasterie in the Trinitario suite, which was wonderful - with comfortable king-sized bed and a great shower.

The whole place is beautifully decorated (and atmospheric, with candles lit at night). It is on a quiet street yet very close to the main sights, the owners are very helpful (great restaurant recommendations) and it has good breakfasts. Can't ask for more!

3/3 found this review helpful

My wife and I and 2 other couples stayed at La Banasterie for four nights in early October. In all respects we were completely satisfied with our accommodations. The location is perfect, just a few minutes walk from all of the major sites in Avignon. The host was very helpful but not intrusive and the breakfasts were wonderful. The rooms are well furnished, quiet and exceptionally comfortable. We also appreciated the free internet access.
I would strongly recommend La Banasterie for anyone visiting the wonderful town of Avignon.
