The requirement was for a hotel within easy walking distance of the Palais de Festivals – but also for a decent hotel at a reasonable price compared to the La Croisette hotels.
Hotel Montaigne fits this quite nicely. The rooms are quite comfortable, the staff is friendly, and breakfast is fine, though far from impressive.
Facilities are somewhat limited. At the time of writing, internet access is only available in the lobby (but wireless and free of charge), and only French language TV channels are available in the rooms. There is a fitness centre next door and a late pizza delivery service across the road as well as several cafes nearby – room service is not available and the hotel has no restaurant.
Parking outside the hotel requires the purchase of parking ticket during working hours, but the hotel has underground parking available at €8 per night. The capacity is limited, though, so you might need to book this in advance by contacting the hotel.
The area of the hotel is not the most interesting around, but you are within easy working distance of the town centre with all its shopping and restaurants as well as the Palais de Festivals. Do not expect a room with a view, but generally there is not much noise unless a large freight train is waiting to be passed by a passenger train in the nearby station.
If you are looking for a comfortable hotel to stay while attending a conference in Cannes or as a base for exploring Cannes and surroundings, you will probably not need anything that cannot be offered from Montaigne. The only thing I missed during my stay was in-room internet access, but when asked about it, the receptionist said "sorry, not yet". There is hope …
