I have stayed in numerous hotels of different quality throughout the world. While not a high 4*, I would definately rate the hotel in the four star level.
We arrived in Nice to end our three week vacation throughout France and Switzerland. This stay included one night on Aeroplan points, one night SPG and one paid night in a classic room.
On arrival, we were quickly served at the front desk, they coordinated the three reservations and within minutes were up in our room with our luggage. As a nice SPG gold treat, we were upgraded to a Superior room with a nice view of the sea.
In the room, upon our arrival, we had the afore mentioned tomatoes and olive oil. Actually, since we had three reservations, we had this treat each night!
As for the room, we must have been in an updated room. The black and red Zen style room was small, but very nice with the small niceties (i.e. the reading lights, recliners and table set on the balcony, and little things like a dim light in the bathroom). The only negative was the purple and brown in the hall...maybe they had not yet been updated. The pool itself also has seen a few better days.
As for the hotel, no it is not wonderful on the outside, but even then, it fits with the area. Of course, with many hotels the outside does not make the hotel (the Four Seasons in Toronto is nighmarish...though much better a hotel that the georgeous Royal York).
As for Service, it was impecable. From the Bell Staff, to the front desk, to housekeeping bringing a bed for our son, to the pool staff...everyone was great, responsive and dealt with my broken French (or my wife's better french).
Now, the only reason why we might not return is that we probably could not afford the 500-700 Euro a night for the same room. But I'd be more than happy to burn through my next set of SPG points.
I guess the best complement was that after a horrible experience in the Geneva Crown Plaza and a great experience in the Le Meridien Nice, I will be changing my hotel preference back to the Starwood Chain (where I was platinium for several years before switching to ICH hotels and Priority Club).
