We had booked a 3 resort stay over 2 weeks and had enjoyed our first 2 hotels which were true 4 star rating, then we arrived in Nice. Le Meridien is a dump. How it has a 4 star rating must be on its city location alone. On checking in to room 455 we were horrified at the less then basic condition of the room. It was dirty with mildew and mould on the walls, it was small dark and smelly. When I went to seek an explanation I was told that my travel agent had booked the “Classic” room and should have known that these all faced inwards and had not been refurbished. I demanded to be moved and was given 3 choices: 1/ Another Classic room higher up that may be brighter. 2/ A Superior room for an extra €100. 3/ A deluxe room for an extra €200. I asked would this extra money cover my 5 days stay and was told “Yes”. I asked to see the rooms before committing and viewed all 3 types. The entire hotel corridors smell of mould. The Classic was brighter but still a dump. The superior was better than the classic and had a balcony. The Deluxe room was what I would have expected on arrival but had an adjoining door to the next room and was the only one available. We accepted the Superior room. The room had some old stains on the furniture, carpet and walls and when opening the bathroom door in the mornings it smelled of mould. The final insult was that they extracted €500 on my departure claiming that the upgrade was €100 per night. Even a basic room in a 1 star hotel should be clean and reasonable comfortable. The Meridien had no explanation as to why it expected its guests to stay in squalor.
The staff were very good and the breakfast facilities were also good.

“Disappointing”

Le Meridien Nice

2 of 5 stars
West Sussex
Oct 1, 2008

I stayed at the Meridien Nice for two nights on business. The reception area, bar and restaurant area are nicely presented and the staff were excellent - even helping with my woefully inadequate French - they were really tolerant and I must just highlight Odile who was lovely and spoke slowly and didnt get annoyed when I didnt understand the first time.

The rooms were something else though. They seriously need some updating. The bathroom was particularly poor with peeling paint, badly replaced tiles and worn taps. The bedroom itself was dated with at least one electrical point not working (this seems to be a particularly French problem I have to say)

I was amazed when I saw the list price of this room was €610/night!!!!!

The position was excellent; just across the road from the beach and within walking distanc e of the old town so just about perfect.

“Expensive, but stylish”

Le Meridien Nice

Sep 22, 2008

We stayed here for four nights to escape the miserable British weather. Fortunately we were not disappointed -- either by the weather, the hotel or Nice itself.

When we arrived we were ushered towards the VIP check-in desk, and then shown to a superior room with its own terrace and sun-loungers. Whether we got some kind of fre upgrade is not clear. But the room rate posted on the back of the door was over 900 euros per night; suffice it to say that we were actually paying less than half this.

The best thing about this hotel is its location. It is right in the centre of Nice, next to the beach, a couple of minutes from the Old Town and near the New Town district. This means you can walk everywhere.

Also great is the roof terrace and swimming pool. OK so you have to pay 10 euros for a sun lounger, but as far as I'm concerned it's no big deal.

The hotel is expensive but we used it as a base, eating elsewhere at all times including breakfast. But I would definitely stay there again.

“Great position and some great rooms but expensive”

Le Meridien Nice

Sep 8, 2008

My wife and I have been visiting Nice for a short weekend break in September for a few years now and last year, as our usual hotel was fully booked, we tried the Meridien. Our first evening was so memorable that we chose to return this year. That evening, we'd arrived quite late having not eaten, so we ordered drinks, omelets and cheeses on room service. Our room had a huge balcony (more a terrace really) with two sun loungers and a table with two large chairs, looking across the neighbouring gardens to the old town and the sea. From these gardens we heard music, which was apparently a rehearsal for an open air concert later that weekend, and our late dinner, which was excellent, was served on this terrace around midnight. We'll remember the magical atmosphere of that evening for a long time.

That room, which was on the side of the hotel on the 7th floor, was sold as "garden/sea view" and so we booked the same again this year but we were given a room on the 5th floor looking straight out over the sea - a great view but not as interesting as last year's. Although nice in some ways the room was much smaller and had a balcony only about 2 feet deep, with nothing to sit on and only a small door to access it. We had our late dinner again but this time inside the room - not nearly as memorable. The rooms seem to have been refitted since last year in a rather stark style (you may like it or not) but this room lacked almost anywhere to store our stuff; no drawers at all - for clothes or bits and pieces - and only a few open shelves, mostly above eye-level.

All in all this seemed a much inferior room to the one we'd had last year, but Ann on Reception assured me it was in the same category. Apparently "Garden/Sea View" means one or the other - not both. Ann, who had checked us in, was helpful and checked carefully whether any other room was free that she could move us into but there weren't any. However, the next morning, she phoned to tell us one had become available and we moved into that for our second night; this was on the 7th floor at the side again, almost identical to last year's. Apart from the view and the large terrace, this room is better also in having more places to store ones belongings, so I really don't understand how it can be considered to be in the same price category.

Ann and the other staff were all very helpful and professional and in all other respects, we were very happy with our stay, once again. The price is pretty high - more than we usually want to pay anywhere and even worse for us given the poor exchange rate (Euro/Pound) these days.

My wife uses a wheelchair and this hotel does have some drawbacks for a wheelchair user, although the staff always do their best to make it work as much as they can. The Reception area is up an escalator from street level. The only way there in a wheelchair is via the lift that is reserved for the hotel porters and starts off inside the locked luggage storage room on the ground floor. This doesn't cause a problem at all - the porters helped immediately everytime we needed to use this lift. From Reception, the public lifts can be used for the rest of the hotel. Sadly, the pool and main restaurant on the roof are not accessible; the lifts stop one floor below the top and there is quite a long flight of stairs to get to the roof. Even if my wife had struggled up to there there are varying levels that would made using a wheelchair difficult, once there.

The private beach - though expensive - is good but the only way down to it is via a flight of stone steps. My wife struggled down and back up as there is no alternative but we don't blame the hotel for this; it's just the way Nice is - all the beaches are the same. There is a wheelchair-accessible public beach close by but we like the service and comforts of the private beach!

So, overall, if you are given a good room and are not disabled, this hotel has a lot going for it. My rating reflects the inconsistency over the room categories the difficulties for disabled guests, and the price, but apart from these, I'd rate it excellent.

“Unreasonable hidden extras”

Le Meridien Nice

Stayed in deluxe room with balcony overlooking park and beach. Clean and refurbished - quality as expected for price and star rating but nothing special. Glanced into some of the standard rooms which had not been refurbished and would not recommend them.

Breakfast good. I usually went around 9.30. People who went earlier told me it was a bit of a scrum at that time due to numbers - it is all self service buffet style.

No tea/coffee making facility in room.
Extra charge for using hotel gym which is very small.
Overpriced spa treatments.
Overpriced minibar contents eg coke or orange juice 6.5 Euro, mini bottle vodka/gin 9 Euros
Small pool that was clean and OK most of the time as not crowded, but I suspect they intentionally accomplish that by charging 10 Euro per sun lounger per day or 8 Euro if after 1pm. Really adds to the costs for a family. No place to put clothes and towels if you don't hire loungers.

These sort or mean aspects of the Hotel had the effect of making me not wish to spend any more in the Hotel than necessary, whereas if these things had been free, as in most other quality hotels around the world, then I would have been inclined to have dinner, spa treatments etc at the hotel. Instead I spent that money elsewhere.

After I left, I remembered that the only other time I'd experienced this kind of penny pinching was at Le Meridien, New York - so I won't book a Le Meridien again. I am sure one can get better value and attitude at other 4 star hotels.

Good location, but make sure you wander to the old town and not stay in immediate area.
Beach stony and uncomfortable and difficult for little children to get into sea as it has a steepish drop over stones. Better beaches a short bus ride away - eg Villefranche. (Use bus when possible as taxis are ridiculously expensive - eg 35 Euro from airport to hotel which is about 5 miles - 4 Euro on good clean bus with suitcase storage area).
