“Great location, but average hotel”

Mercure Nice Centre Notre Dame

We stayed here for 4 nights in room 409. This was my second stay and I last visited in 2004.

The positives:

- good location

- great bed

- parking next door at 10 euros per night

- room overlooked the garden

The not so good:

- the service, I think the people in this hotel thought they were the guests. When we checked in I had to ask for someone to help with our luggage, the front desk clerk looked like he couldn't be bothered. When my husband asked about using the Internet they pointed to a terminal in the corner which you had to pay for but then we were told that there were two free Internet terminals upstairs. When we checked out, the porter watched us drag our luggage through the lobby and load it into our car

- the breakfast was un-appetising, the hot component was unedible, the eggs were runny and the bacon and sausages were grey (no wonder they never needed replenishing).

- the bathroom was a little tired and the L'Occitane toiletries from my visit in 2004 were long gone

- we had problems with our parking ticket everyday and had to go to reception just so we could get our car out. Each day we'd say, "So this will definitely work for the rest of the stay?" We were always assured it would, there were no apologies, it was like we were inconveniencing them

- they overcharged us for breakfast, but quickly rectified it

This does not feel like a four star hotel.

“Reliable Mercure Hotels”

Mercure Nice Centre Notre Dame

We stayed 3 nights at the Mercure Notre Dame. It is a typical Mercure style hotel that is centrally located. The room was modern clean and had good amenities and it was a reasonable size with a decent ensuite bathroom. We got a special rate booking though another Mercure Hotel In Uzes at 129E per night. The hotel charges 10E per night to park your car in the underground carpark next door to the hotel which we thought was very reasonable. The hotel has a nice rooftop pool and some nice amenities however we like to get out and explore so we spent little time in the hotel.
The hotel was quite full so we moved to the Mercure Grimaldi which is closer to the Promenade for our last 2 days stay in Nice and France. Both Mercure hotels in Nice were good, Notre Dame has more features and it newer, the Grimaldi is older but the rooms are bigger. We preferred the larger rooms and the Rue Grimaldi location next to a restaurant/cafe/shopping area however both hotels were well located within walking distance to tourist sites.

“Good location, poor breakfast”

Mercure Nice Centre Notre Dame

Only had to stay one night and got a good deal at EUR 110 at hotels . com for a double room. The location is good - only takes 5 minutes to walk to the beach and shopping streets. The hotel itself was nice and the room had all the requirements we needed - bathroom seemed a bit worn, however, this is quite typical for French hotels. On the top of the hotel is a swimming pool and a fantastic view over Nice. The hotel is rated four stars, however, I'm not sure everyone would agree, though we found it nice with exception of the breakfast. PLEASE do not pay EUR 15 per person for their breakfast....it totally sucks! There was no eggs when we dined there and no good selection of bread at all. Moreover no wine or champagne which is rather common when paying that much. When paying EUR 15 you would expect a good buffet, however, it was really poor. We felt ripped off and would suggest finding a cozy café eating breakfact there instead. Otherwise the hotel was great and a good alternative to the more expensive hotels located at the beach.

“Fabulous roof top pool outweighed negatives”

Having been ripped off by our taxi driver I was not in a good mood when I entered our room and so my initial response was one of disappointment. The bathroom was unmodernised and fairly shabby and the paintwork in the room was a horrific throwback to the 80's with sponge effects in shades of apricot and ochre. Our room faced out onto the street and wasn't double glazed.

The room itself (apart from the decor) was fine with modern fittings and funiture and a reasonable size considering there was an extra pull out bed for 2 persons in the corner plus flat screen TV.

I cheered up enormously when I saw the roof top pool and sun loungers
and fabulous view. Towels were free and during the weekdays we had the pool and roof area more or less to ourselves. With a child who likes to swim and us liking to sunbathe, we did spend a lot of time up there which was very relaxing. A few steps down from the pool was a bar with very friendly staff where you could order drinks, ice creams and light meals.

The hotel also has a wonderful garden although we never saw anyone in it; another place to sit and relax in.

The location is excellent, just off the main shopping street with a Spar supermarket nearby (which sells cold drinks), an internet cafe behind the church (50 cents for 15 minutes), plenty of good restaurants nearby (much better food than those in the typical tourist areas), a great boulangerie (right out of the hotel, right into the main street and then 2nd turning on the left), 10 minutes walk to the sea, flower market, old town etc.

The airconditioning was one of the best I have experienced in a hotel, effective and not noisy. The rooms were a bit noisy - lots of hooting cars in the mornings, you could hear the water and flushing in other rooms, breakfast was fine (nothing special).

We booked through one of the pop ups on this site www.otel.com and considering we paid only £100 per night for the 3 of us with breakfast for peak season (last week of August) for such a good location and free facilities of pool and sunloungers, this was remarkable value for money and overall we were very impressed and decided the noise and the shabby bathroom were minor in comparison.

One thing we didn't expect was to be "attacked" by a jellyfish in the
sea - my husband still bears the scars 5 days later on his back and all along his arm! Luckily we were near a first aid post and they sprayed some stuff on it, added some cream and bandages and the pain subsided an hour or so later. He says it was incredibly painful. That's when we reverted to the roof top pool!

“Good, solid hotel with helpful front desk”

Mercure Nice Centre Notre Dame

We booked this hotel short notice for a weekend city break in Nice. The hotel itself is central with a short, easy walk to the coast, flower market (worth a visit!) or shops. We found it to be clean, comfortable and ideal for what we were after. The roof pool and terrace is smallish, but absolutely fine and never seemed to be overcrowded. Views from there not breathtaking, but ok nonetheless. Lovely garden area on 1st floor which seemed to be missed by many guests.
When we got there, because we had booked very short notice, there was a mix up with our room. This was dealt with pretty quickly (many thanks to Dorothee on the front desk who went out of her way - excellent language skills and very helpful and friendly), whilst we enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine! We were upgraded - room not huge but big enough, clean and perfectly fine. Service staff were efficient and discreet.

If you want a honeymoon special hotel or an amazing boutique hotel, the Mercure Centre ND may not be for you. But if you want a clean, solid, well-situated hotel for a stay in Nice, it is spot on. We thought so anyway!
