Summary: Tremendously letdown after all the positive reviews on the board. Old and nasty room with little service. Good location for Promenade des Anglais and the train station. Old Nice and Parc du Chateau are 15-20 minutes away. Make sure they confirm that you will get a room on the upper floor before you confirm your reservation.
Location: Good location for the Promenade des Anglais. It is between 5-10 minutes walking from the sea. Take "Nice Direct" bus number 98, get off at the Meyerbeer stop (it doesn't actually say Meyerbeer but that's what the street is so ask the driver) after you see Hotel Negresco on the left. Cross the street and the small street is Meyerbeer. Walk straight for a couple of blocks and it becomes Rue Gounod. The hotel will be on your left and you cannot miss it. Alternatively, you can take bus 99 to the Nice train station and the walk will be a couple minutes more. Either way, the bus ride is no more than 20 minutes max.
The hotel is about 15-20 minutes walking to Old Nice and 10 minutes to Place Massena which is very acceptable. There are some Pizzerias nearby. The sister property, Hotel Splendid, is just next door.
Room: I booked about 6 weeks early and checked in during the morning. However, I don't understand why they could only give me an uncarpeted ground floor room that is very dimly lit with paint peeling off. The room size is good but everything else is old. The bathroom has a tub and shower and is ok, but there is no curtain nor the half glass so when I took a shower, water would go everywhere no matter how hard I tried to keep it dry. For the rest of the day or night, the entire bathroom is disgustingly wet as there is no ventilation. The blankets on the bed were very old as well. We did ask for another room and was shown to one on the second floor which is slightly better furnished, but it was half the size of the first one and didn't even have a window so we settled for the original room.
The next morning before we got up, since we are on the ground floor and the kitchen is nearby, the smell of greasy bacon came streaming in. How is that for a wake-up call?
Service: I was extremely disappointed that we were not offered a better room despite the fact that we were probably the first one to check-in that day, and the day time manager hardly cared. I have been to various countries in Europe several times and know what to expect from European hotel rooms. This was a huge disappointment. The front desk also never mentioned that we could use the facilities at Hotel Splendid although I knew that before I checked in. It was very much like "here's your key, now you are on your own." He did let us use the car park when we picked up our rental car on the last day for free.
Price: The room was about 90 Euros a night which was ok. However, the room condition made me feel I could have spent less money at Ibis and still got a better deal, or spend another 20 or 30 Euros to stay at Mercure right on the Promenade. I was glad I was only there for 2 days.
