We had a wonderful room on the 5th floor of the Gounod - was large with sitting area, king size bed, storage for all our things, and a very clean and well maintained bathroom. We had two doors that opened up to Juliet balconies - with views of the Splendid Hotel next door (we also used the pool there - small, but just enough to take a quick dip, especially since the ocean is a short walk away!) as well as some other residential buildings.

Had breakfast everyday at the hotel - it was included with our rate - nothing fancy, but they always had pastries, eggs, yogurt, cereal, coffee, tea, etc. - just enough to get you started for the day.

Hotel staff was helpful in recommending restaurants - but since you are just a short walk away from just about everything, we ended up walking most of the time and eating wherever it suited us.

I would definitely stay there again if I were to return to Nice.

Got the 99 bus direct from Nice airport to the Train Stration 4euros each. Rue Gounod is accross the road from the station & approx 10-15 mins walk to the hotel, & a few blocks from the Promenade Anglaise. 20+ minutes walk to the old town. The area was quiet & we felt safe. Lots of bars/cafes/restaurants in the vacinity.

Our room on 5th floor had no balcony or view to speak of but was a good size. Plenty of storage, comfortable bed, personal control air con, mini bar & TV.
Very nice bathroom with bath & shower cublicle - very clean.
Good standard of buffet breakfast of cereal/yogurt/eggs/cold meat/cheese/sausages/bread/pastries & preserves.
Hotel staff were friendly & helpful.
Gounod visitors may use Hotel Splendid facilities next door. Small pool/jacuzzi/sun beds on the roof as well as restaurant & bar. This was a good experience & we would stay there again.

We appreciated our comfortable room in this graceful old hotel but a short walk from the Promenade des Anglais. Very well run with a friendly staff. We really enjoyed walking the 10-15 minute walk to the Flower Market and open food market to buy cheese and baguette and strawberries-to-die-for for breakfast. The old town in Nice is still amazingly beautiful, with its surprising colors. Don't miss the Chagall Museum.

I booked the Gounod based on the reviews on Tripadvisor, in particular in reference to the description of a "suite". It's all true - the location is great, the services are adequate for a 3 star hotel and from the outside it looks like a nice old French hotel and not a modern box. Unfortunately our "suite" did not live up to my expectations - we had a twin room and a single room plus ONE not two bathrooms and a toilet (extra) Room 201 by the way - I assume there must be bigger and better suites in the hotel itself but I didn't want to fuss on arrival as the whole trip was a birthday treat for my dad. So if you are booking a suite make sure you know the details in advance. So much for my assiduous use of French for all correspondence and communication. I think if you use English you are better off! The breakfast room is also not very romantic and the background music can be a bit irritating.
Otherwise Nice is lovely - expensive of course - but well worth a visit.
