“Average Hotel - Great Position”

Three star centrally located hotel with nothing too much to offer or to complain about either.

Staff are pleasant if not too informative, and although the rooms are fairly basic, you do get a bath and shower, a small TV (which shows BBC World and occasionally CNN), plus noisy (and not always effective) air conditioning. I should add that all comments refer to Room 107 - I did not see the others, but all seemed identical, although the hotel boasts a few with balconies facing on to the street. One point though - fellow guests complained about the rooms on the top floor, and so avoid those if you can.

Walls are paper thin, which - if your hearing is good - can lead to some interesting conversations!

Beds are not too bad - a double bed appeared to be two single beds bolted together however - with no pillows (in 107 anyway) but the usual European bolster effort.

Breakfast is pretty basic, but at 5 euro, is on par for what 5 euro will get you on the streets anyway, so do not bother going shopping for early morning treats.

Service is relatively efficient, although on Sunday, room service was absent (in 107 anyway), which may have simply been an error.

Basically, at the Harvey, you are paying for a basic level of comfort, plus an enhanced position in Nice itself.

At the Harvey, you are minutes away from the seafront, yards away from the restaurants and shops, five minutes from the magnificent Place Messena, and 15 minutes away from both the Old Town, and the Railway Station, where the one train can put you in Cannes, Monaco, or indeed Italy, in less than 30 minutes.

Perhaps there is better value in Nice, but having looked at a few others in the same area, it is much of a muchness.

Basically a hotel to sleep and breakfast in - which given the wealth of treasures around you - is all you want anyway.

“Great location, but paper thin walls unfortunately”

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. Please see my pros and cons listed below. I cannot fault this hotel in terms of its location and friendly hotel staff. However I would be inclined not to stay there again as I am a light sleeper and noise levels were an issue.

PROS
1) Excellent location. 3 minute walk to the Promenade des anglais, 10 minutes walk to the Cours salaya and old town. Plenty of restaurants and shops just around the corner.
2) Easy transport links. 20 minute walk to the train station. 3 minute walk to the No.98 bus stop which takes you direct to the airport.
3) Helpful hotel staff. Reception staff all speak extremely good English and are very willing to provide advice on Nice.
4) Functional hotel room. The double bedroom was a fair size, was adequately clean and had good storage.

CONS
1) Hotel room walls are paper thin. It was very easy to hear what the people next door were saying, their television as well as when they were running a bath. Outside noise was not a problem however as windows were pretty sound proof.
2) No house keeping service in the evenings (specifically in our case no access to towels).
3) Minimal staff in the evenings. I was under the impression that the man on reception was the only member of staff.

MISC
1) Rooms come with a bath or shower, so if you want either you will need to put in a request.

“horrible service”

Hotel Harvey

Aug 3, 2007

I had my first taste of the french don't like american here. And I had spent alot of time in France over 10 years ago... 2 out of 3 of the concierges were nasty and unhelpful. One was ok and offered some help. Room was less then charming. Maids were very nice.

“Lots of other hotels giving much better value for money”

As other travellers have already suggested, this hotel has got a star too much. Essentially worn-down rooms, furniture about to fall apart, not very helpful staff. First impression when entering the room is getting completely wet. Essentially water leaking down on the loor, so everytime entering you get wet, not to mention anything you leav in the area close to the door. When asked about this issue they didn't see it as a problem at all... As others have mentioned rooms smelled like potatoe cellars. Well, the hotel must have read that review, now the smell was a strong smell of "artificially clean air". Terrible. Other travelers have mentioned noice from the street. Well, I can tell them that getting a room not facing to the street is probably worse: a 1 square meter "backyard", and here the windows are not sound-proof so currently I have to survive a russian move from one of the neighbors. The lack of real backyard also means very little light, so the room is rather gloomy. Very thin walls between the rooms as well, so not the place to talk about secrets! :-) I have been to Nice several times before and stayed at many nice hotels in the same price range. So essentially, no reason to stay at Harvey, lots of better ways to spend your money in Nice!

“Excellent Value for Money”

If you want a budget hotel in a great location then this is the place. I just returned from a few days in Nice at the Harvey. Being a female travelling alone I did a lot of research before booking as I wanted an area where I would feel safe. I mainly relied on Trip Advisor reviews and so glad I did. This is not a fancy hotel but I found it clean and pleasant and had everything I needed. If you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel you may not be happy as there is no lounge, just a breakfast area, but I just wanted a place to base myself for seeing the area at a budget price. My room was in the back with no view but was very quiet and all I needed. Bed was comfortable. Fresh towels every day. A/C worked well. Fridge and safe in room. The staff were without exception very helpful and friendly. The ladies working the reception spoke English and were paricularly nice and went out of their way to help. You can't wish for a better location, right in the heart of the best area for restaurants, close to the flower market, just a minute's walk to Promenade des Anglais, about 10 min walk to bus station and 20+ min walk to rail station. I paid for continental breakfast at the hotel most mornings and filled up on juice and coffee which was good but you might get bored if staying longer. Only negatives: If TV is important - I had problems getting BBC World News even after staff came to fix it. Never got CNN at all. There was a tiny tub, and shower hose on the wall, but no shower curtain in my particular room, so having either a bath or a shower not so convenient, but I managed. There is a bidet. Shower gel and soap provided. I borrowed a hairdryer with no problems. I would definitely stay there again.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Location. Comfortable room and bed. Quiet. A/C worked well. Great value for money.
    • Disliked — Not able to get CNN as advertised. BBC News not reliable. No shower curtain. Limited breakfast selection.
