My wife and I stayed at the Plaza for 3 nights in April. Having read negative comments re standard rooms on Tripadvisor, we opted to upgrade to a Deluxe room, paying €155 per night B&B.
The hotel is ideally located, just a short stroll from the sea and the old town. The hotel has probably seen better days and better clientele, but the public areas seemed generally fine.
Our 5th floor Deluxe room was reasonably spacious, comfortable and clean. The “Deluxe” bit was the balcony, with 2 sun loungers, table & 2 chairs and electric awning, with a lovely view across the small Albert 1er Park to the sea. It was a real sun-trap and we made considerable use of the balcony during our stay.
TV had 2 English language channels - CNN & Eurosport. No tea/coffee-making facility and no bathrobes/slippers, which one might expect in a “Deluxe” room.
We didn’t see into any other rooms, so we can only comment on our own.
Breakfast is served in the basement - a reasonably well-stocked self-service buffet. However, the “hot” food - scrambled egg, sausages, rashers - was never better than tepid.
We didn’t have any other meals in the hotel, but the rooftop terrace did seem to be reasonably popular at lunchtime. A 3-hour “happy Hour” in the hotel bar didn’t seem to entice many takers. It was generally very quite, often empty.
Eating Out: We ate at
Rest. Villa d’Este, Rue Massena - buzzy Italian eaterie, inexpensive.
Rest. Luc Salsedo, Rue Maccarani - short table d’hote menu, but interesting, enjoyable food.
La Maison de Marie, Rue Massena - good seafood.
A couple of other places recommended by a knowledgeable acquaintance, which we didn’t get to try this trip: Bistrot du Port, down by the port, and Bistrot d’Antoine, Rue de la Prefecture, in the old town.
Airport Transport: we got ripped off on the taxi ride from the airport. The airport bus (98) stops just about 50 metres from the front door of the Plaza, runs every 20 minutes, drops you at the terminal door and costs €4. Just check whether your flight is departing from T1 or T2, the bus stops at both.
