We stayed at the Best Western, Le Riviera for 3 nights and, on the whole, found it an ideal base for the things we wanted to do. We arrived at 10 a.m. and, although check-in at the hotel was not officially until 2 p.m., the receptionist helpfully checked if our room was ready, which it was so we were able to check in, freshen up and begin our exploration of Nice. In general, all the staff we dealt with were polite and helpful. There is also a free safety deposit facility available at reception which I would definitely recommend for keeping valuables, passports, etc safe.
Our room (502) was clean but rather cramped for two of us. It was also at the front of the hotel which meant it faced the street making it a little noisier than we would have liked. There was a fridge but it was not working which was a shame as it would have been a handy facility to have. The TV also did not have a remote control. The air conditioning worked efficiently though.
Having read other reviews saying the breakfast was poor, we had brought some food with us just in case. However, I have to disagree about the breakfast. It was not extensive but it was a perfectly good, basic continental breakfast – fruit salad, croissants, bread, ham, cheese, fruit juices, tea and coffee. Our own food came back with us uneaten. Admittedly, I would not have paid the 10 euro charge for it had it not been included in the price of our room. If you like a cup of tea with your breakfast, I would suggest taking your own teabags as there is a coffee machine which also gives hot water. Teabags are provided but are probably not as good as the ones you are used to.
As far as hotel location is concerned, this may not be the place for you if you want to go to the beach every day as it is a 20-30 minute walk away. As we are not beach types, we found it excellent for getting to the old town (20 minute walk) and the main shopping street (15 minute walk). Best of all, was the fact that the hotel is 10 minutes from Nice train station giving full access to the whole Cote d’Azur line and beyond (Paris, etc) if required. If you stay at this hotel, you can also catch the airport express bus 99 from the airport to the station for 4 euros (the taxi costs 30 euros one way) and only have to drag your suitcase about a hundred yards to get to the hotel and the reverse on the way back to the airport. Buses run every 15 minutes, have plenty of room for luggage and take the scenic route so you can take one last (or first) look at the stunning Cote d’Azur.
Taking into account cost and location, I would say this hotel met our needs very well and we would go back perhaps with a room upgrade next time around.
