“Cheap, central and newly refurbed”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

Oct 7, 2008

Booked this last minute, 1am the same day as flying to nice and took the cheapest within walking distance to the centre of Nice. This turned out to be very near to the train station with large car park (easy to park but very expensive 21 euro for 20 hours) over the road. Hotel much better than expected after reading the reviews here. Our room was reasonable size, air con worked ok, tv worked, no probs with hot water, plenty of towels etc. It also looked as though it had just been refitted out (except loose bath hand rail) Staff friendly, and we were happy with the overall experience. We only stayed overnight as this was just a landing pad before heading down the coast. The area around the train station was mildly edgy at night, but absolutely fine unless you're the type to walk about looking lost and not aware of whats happening around you.

“Locked in the lobby alone”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

1 of 5 stars
Connecticut
Sep 12, 2008

I had an early flight from the Nice airport and needed a place to stay the night before. Consequently I had a conversation with the receptionist about how early the buses ran to the airport. They didn't start until 8:00 am, but if I needed a cab they would be able to call me one. However, when I arrived in the lobby the next morning at 5:00am to catch my 7:30 flight, there was no one at reception.
I had never seen any indication that the desk had limited hours - not on the hotel website, and not even posted in the lobby. I had wanted to inform the staff of a clump of hair I found in my towels, but there was no one to speak with. I gave up and decided to simply leave so that I could still catch my flight. But the automatic doors wouldn't open. I WAS LOCKED IN THE HOTEL.
Not only was this a huge inconvenience for me, but also a potential fire hazard. Heaven forbid there had been some kind of emergency, because everyone staying in the hotel would have been trapped.
While I did manage to catch my flight, my stay at this hotel made my morning far more stressful than it needed to be.

“Close to the train station, not so close to beach”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

4 of 5 stars
Zurich, Switzerland
Sep 4, 2008

This hotel is very well located if you think of making use of the train station. It is about 4 minutes walk to the train station where you can catch trains to Cannes and Monaco. But it is not very close to the city centre and the beach of Nice. It's about a 15 minutes walk to the city centre and about 20 minutes walk to the seaside promenade. If you decide to just stay in Nice and not visit other cities in the region, then I would recommend to rather stay at a hotel which is better located in the city centre.
The hotel itself is nice, the rooms are small but clean and the bathroom was very new and big enough for two. The breakfast is nothing special but okay, but I would not pay extra for it. If you don't have it included, then I would rather recommend to spend the money in a cafe nearby or get a sandwich somewhere instead of the breakfast at the hotel. The people at the frontdesk were very nice and gave us a lot of information, maps, etc.

“Exceptionally Helpful Staff”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

4 of 5 stars
Calgary, Alberta
Aug 19, 2008

We arrived in Nice from Paris at the TGV station and were so pleased that the hotel was a very close walk away. The problem we had was with the central Best Western reservation desk in the United States. Long story short, we arrived and our room reservation for 5 nights in Nice had been cancelled without our knowledge. Being in the peak travel season in July, they did not have a room for the first 2 nights but was willing to give us our original room rate for the last 3 nights. Immediately, Norbert and the other lady (sorry, I forgot her name) receptionists phoned around Nice and found us a room at another Best Western hotel but it was about 6 tram stations away. We went to the other hotel and came back to the Riviera for the last 3 nights. They upgraded us to a larger room and Norbert was very accomodating and cared about our stay in Nice. The location was great since we took a few day trips along the Cote D'Azur so being walking distance away from the TGV station was a treat! Thank you, Norbert, for your great hospitality!

“Good value, good location!”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

Jun 19, 2007
4/4 found this review helpful

We stayed at the Best Western, Le Riviera for 3 nights and, on the whole, found it an ideal base for the things we wanted to do. We arrived at 10 a.m. and, although check-in at the hotel was not officially until 2 p.m., the receptionist helpfully checked if our room was ready, which it was so we were able to check in, freshen up and begin our exploration of Nice. In general, all the staff we dealt with were polite and helpful. There is also a free safety deposit facility available at reception which I would definitely recommend for keeping valuables, passports, etc safe.

Our room (502) was clean but rather cramped for two of us. It was also at the front of the hotel which meant it faced the street making it a little noisier than we would have liked. There was a fridge but it was not working which was a shame as it would have been a handy facility to have. The TV also did not have a remote control. The air conditioning worked efficiently though.

Having read other reviews saying the breakfast was poor, we had brought some food with us just in case. However, I have to disagree about the breakfast. It was not extensive but it was a perfectly good, basic continental breakfast – fruit salad, croissants, bread, ham, cheese, fruit juices, tea and coffee. Our own food came back with us uneaten. Admittedly, I would not have paid the 10 euro charge for it had it not been included in the price of our room. If you like a cup of tea with your breakfast, I would suggest taking your own teabags as there is a coffee machine which also gives hot water. Teabags are provided but are probably not as good as the ones you are used to.

As far as hotel location is concerned, this may not be the place for you if you want to go to the beach every day as it is a 20-30 minute walk away. As we are not beach types, we found it excellent for getting to the old town (20 minute walk) and the main shopping street (15 minute walk). Best of all, was the fact that the hotel is 10 minutes from Nice train station giving full access to the whole Cote d’Azur line and beyond (Paris, etc) if required. If you stay at this hotel, you can also catch the airport express bus 99 from the airport to the station for 4 euros (the taxi costs 30 euros one way) and only have to drag your suitcase about a hundred yards to get to the hotel and the reverse on the way back to the airport. Buses run every 15 minutes, have plenty of room for luggage and take the scenic route so you can take one last (or first) look at the stunning Cote d’Azur.

Taking into account cost and location, I would say this hotel met our needs very well and we would go back perhaps with a room upgrade next time around.
