“Good value, good location!”

Best Western Hotel Riviera

We stayed at the Best Western, Le Riviera for 3 nights and, on the whole, found it an ideal base for the things we wanted to do. We arrived at 10 a.m. and, although check-in at the hotel was not officially until 2 p.m., the receptionist helpfully checked if our room was ready, which it was so we were able to check in, freshen up and begin our exploration of Nice. In general, all the staff we dealt with were polite and helpful. There is also a free safety deposit facility available at reception which I would definitely recommend for keeping valuables, passports, etc safe.

Our room (502) was clean but rather cramped for two of us. It was also at the front of the hotel which meant it faced the street making it a little noisier than we would have liked. There was a fridge but it was not working which was a shame as it would have been a handy facility to have. The TV also did not have a remote control. The air conditioning worked efficiently though.

Having read other reviews saying the breakfast was poor, we had brought some food with us just in case. However, I have to disagree about the breakfast. It was not extensive but it was a perfectly good, basic continental breakfast – fruit salad, croissants, bread, ham, cheese, fruit juices, tea and coffee. Our own food came back with us uneaten. Admittedly, I would not have paid the 10 euro charge for it had it not been included in the price of our room. If you like a cup of tea with your breakfast, I would suggest taking your own teabags as there is a coffee machine which also gives hot water. Teabags are provided but are probably not as good as the ones you are used to.

As far as hotel location is concerned, this may not be the place for you if you want to go to the beach every day as it is a 20-30 minute walk away. As we are not beach types, we found it excellent for getting to the old town (20 minute walk) and the main shopping street (15 minute walk). Best of all, was the fact that the hotel is 10 minutes from Nice train station giving full access to the whole Cote d’Azur line and beyond (Paris, etc) if required. If you stay at this hotel, you can also catch the airport express bus 99 from the airport to the station for 4 euros (the taxi costs 30 euros one way) and only have to drag your suitcase about a hundred yards to get to the hotel and the reverse on the way back to the airport. Buses run every 15 minutes, have plenty of room for luggage and take the scenic route so you can take one last (or first) look at the stunning Cote d’Azur.

Taking into account cost and location, I would say this hotel met our needs very well and we would go back perhaps with a room upgrade next time around.

“Ideal location”

After reading some reviews, I was a bit worried about the location. However, I wanted somewhere near the station, as I was travelling with my 70+ mother and didn't want too far to walk back in the evenings,as we planned to take train trips along the coast each day.
The room was small ,but adequate, and I was pleased with the modern bathroom and the automatic shutters on the window. We were on the sixth floor, overlooking the road, and apart from the traffic and train noise, the hotel was very quiet inside - perfect for what we wanted (just somewhere to sleep) and we would stay there again. There are 2 lifts, which we never had to wait for and we were satisfied with our choice.

“Room comes with its own man”

To be fair, we picked this hotel because we could get a triple room near the train station and did not expect much. Our expectations were met - it is not much. When we arrived, the woman at the desk was charming and sweet and efficient. We proceeded to our room and found a MAN in our bed, much to our dismay!! This fellow was a "work"man and had a light fixture off the wall in the bathroom and apparently needed a break. His cigarettes and snack were on the desk. The one of our party who speaks the best French proceeded downstairs to protest this development and request a different room. A new person was at the desk and was rude and not willing to deal with the matter. In the meantime, the startled worker was gathering his things, a chamber maid arrived and changed the pillow case. The workers got into an argument. Eventually, the nice lady (manager on duty, perhaps?) showed up, joined the argument, and then asked if we had a problem. When told that we found a man in the room, sleeping, to be a problem, she offered to have the room put in order and provided us with some colas in the lobby while we waited. We were only staying one night and needed the train station convenience, so we stayed.

The breakfast was stale and meager and seemed purchased from a supermarket - packaged croissants, for instance, instead of fresh baked. Most of the area was set for a tour and we were admonished not to sit at a pre-set table. The baked goods for the tour sat out for hours on individual plates - I hope the poor tour members got better baked goods elsewhere during their trip!!

In fairness to those who mention the neighborhood, it seems safe. If you have traveled Europe by rail, you will find what you expect. Yes, there are "adult-oriented shops" but I've seen them all over Europe near the stations and ports. They did not seem inordinately randy. No "clientele" were observed. This area is not the tourist area, but more for the transient traveler.

Also, it will be interesting to read the future reviews of this hotel, as the whole thing seems to be under random renovation. Perhaps it will get spruced up, and then it may have some charm.

“You can find much better”

To start with this hotel does not look like a hotel seen from the outside. When we arrived we had to leave our luggages since it was early for check in. There is no luggage room available and these had to be left in the breakfast room which seemed unattended. The lift to the rooms merely has space for one person and a large luggage and most of the time was out of order. The rooms were okay, just a small problem with the space since the wardrobe was too small and no drawers were available. The bathroom was comfortable and not small, probably the best thing in the room. The staff was really friendly and ready to help. The location wasn't bad either, just a 15 minute walk from the promenade, 5 minute walk from the train station and 10 minutes for the restaurants.

I will not recommend this hotel to anyone and in particular to families with children. I did not feel safe in the area or in the hotel. There several XXX-rated enterprises right near the hotel. We were absolutely disappointed and shortned our trip to just one night. Brochures and pictures of the hotel that I found on the internet misrepresent it completely.
