My daughter and I have just returned from staying 4 nights in the Univers Hotel. We were given the choice between 2 rooms when we arrived so we chose the quiet room at the back, which was quiet apart from the plumbing noises from the adjoining rooms.
Our beds were comfortable but there were no shelves or drawers in the room, only a wardrode, so we had to live out of our suitcases. There was a tiny TV on the wall with French channels but it did have BBC world news.
There was no shower curtain and the bathroom did get rather wet, but nice soap and shower gel was provided each day.
The lighting in the stairs was dangerously poor and I would recommend people take extra care when walking up and down the stairs if not using the lift.
Breakfast was OK and saved you finding somewhere else to eat. Cereal and milk, tinned fruit and yoghurt, toast, butter marmalade or jam, ham, cheese and croisants, coffee, tea, orange or apple juice. The cereal dishes were strange and only teaspoons were provided and things did keep running out. Don't leave it until the last minute to go for breakfast or everything will be gone!
Now definitely the best thing about the hotel was the position. Very central and right on a tram route. Easy to get to the beach and the old town and the train station.
But I would recommend it to people and go back there myself. Next time I would take a travel kettle and tea and coffee as I needed a cup when I got back to the room after doing so much walking during the day.
