It is a shame the reviewer below had such an aweful experience at Hotel Rex. Personally, my fiance and I enjoyed our time at Nice tremendously, mainly because we had such a great time at Hotel Rex.
Yes, the door is not exactly on the main street, you have to walk up a flight of stairs, through a little bridge and up another flight of stairs to get to reception. However, this created a cute quaint atmosphere, and it enabled the hotel to be central to all amenities without having the noise of the main street directly in front of the hotel (seriously, it gets so busy at night you would NOT want to sleep directly above the street). When we arrived, I had a suitcase which I was dreading carrying up the stairs, when we walked in the door, we met this nice lady (mariel i believe), who offered to carry my suitcase up BOTH flights of stairs, and into our room. She was the person in charge whilst Thierry was away that week.
Next thing, my camera charger stopped working (and since it uses AA batteries, i just asked reception whether they had a spare charger I could borrow). The man behind reception when Marial was away could not help but he insisted his son take me to the nearest electronics store so I could buy a new charger!!!! His son was so accommodating, but I had to refuse the help as I felt they had been far too nice already.
When I asked if we could use their fridge to store our water and fruit, they were happy to oblige, they even offered to let us use their internet for free in the evenings when it was not too busy!!!
The BEST service we received was when I asked if there was a laundromat nearby so we could get out of our smelly clothes, and rather than pointing out a place, they just told us to leave the dirty clothes with them and they will get the people who do their laundry to add this (at no extra charge)... we came home that day with all our laundry dry and folded on our bed, could not believe the length they would go to!!!!!
Finally - we were wanting to travel up to Paris and could not find affordable accommodation. Murial proceeded to stay up with me, gave me a Metro map for Paris and even looked up a few places she knew in Paris for us to book!!! I just could not thank her enough, and feel as if we were staying at a friend/relatives place instead of just a hotel...
So overall - sure the place is a little small with not the best view, but you have everything you need, a comfortable bed (with ample space for two suitcases by the way), very simple but cutely decorated walls, a small bathroom (but then again, most of europe has small bathrooms anyway)... a tv and even a little fan for the warm nights which luckily we didn't have to use. For 60 Euro a night, for such a great location and fantastic service, i would thoroughly reommend this place to anyone, and this was by far the BEST place we stayed at throughout europe, even though many other places were bigger or nicer, Hotel Rex provided the best value for money and experience you just cannot find in big chain hotels.
We stayed their 3 nights, and wished it was longer because Nice is a beautiful place, very easy to walk around and nice for a day trip to Monacco. I would certainly stay here again if I was to return to Nice.
