“The best service we ever had!!!”

It is a shame the reviewer below had such an aweful experience at Hotel Rex. Personally, my fiance and I enjoyed our time at Nice tremendously, mainly because we had such a great time at Hotel Rex.

Yes, the door is not exactly on the main street, you have to walk up a flight of stairs, through a little bridge and up another flight of stairs to get to reception. However, this created a cute quaint atmosphere, and it enabled the hotel to be central to all amenities without having the noise of the main street directly in front of the hotel (seriously, it gets so busy at night you would NOT want to sleep directly above the street). When we arrived, I had a suitcase which I was dreading carrying up the stairs, when we walked in the door, we met this nice lady (mariel i believe), who offered to carry my suitcase up BOTH flights of stairs, and into our room. She was the person in charge whilst Thierry was away that week.

Next thing, my camera charger stopped working (and since it uses AA batteries, i just asked reception whether they had a spare charger I could borrow). The man behind reception when Marial was away could not help but he insisted his son take me to the nearest electronics store so I could buy a new charger!!!! His son was so accommodating, but I had to refuse the help as I felt they had been far too nice already.

When I asked if we could use their fridge to store our water and fruit, they were happy to oblige, they even offered to let us use their internet for free in the evenings when it was not too busy!!!

The BEST service we received was when I asked if there was a laundromat nearby so we could get out of our smelly clothes, and rather than pointing out a place, they just told us to leave the dirty clothes with them and they will get the people who do their laundry to add this (at no extra charge)... we came home that day with all our laundry dry and folded on our bed, could not believe the length they would go to!!!!!

Finally - we were wanting to travel up to Paris and could not find affordable accommodation. Murial proceeded to stay up with me, gave me a Metro map for Paris and even looked up a few places she knew in Paris for us to book!!! I just could not thank her enough, and feel as if we were staying at a friend/relatives place instead of just a hotel...

So overall - sure the place is a little small with not the best view, but you have everything you need, a comfortable bed (with ample space for two suitcases by the way), very simple but cutely decorated walls, a small bathroom (but then again, most of europe has small bathrooms anyway)... a tv and even a little fan for the warm nights which luckily we didn't have to use. For 60 Euro a night, for such a great location and fantastic service, i would thoroughly reommend this place to anyone, and this was by far the BEST place we stayed at throughout europe, even though many other places were bigger or nicer, Hotel Rex provided the best value for money and experience you just cannot find in big chain hotels.

We stayed their 3 nights, and wished it was longer because Nice is a beautiful place, very easy to walk around and nice for a day trip to Monacco. I would certainly stay here again if I was to return to Nice.

Hotel Rex

Reading the mostly positive reviews for the Rex leaves me quite perplexed. There must be a second Rex Hotel in Nice and I ended up staying at the wrong one.

Positives
- Location. Yes it was ideal. Just around the corner from Place Massena. Right on Rue Massena which is a gigantic pedestrian walkway filled with shops and restaurants. Also an 8 minute walk to the beach.
- Price.

Negatives
- No actual Rex Hotel building at street level. Just a door. Through it you go and up a flight of stairs to a courtyard. When I say courtyard I’m being nice. What you’re looking at are the backsides of various apartment buildings with laundry draped all over the railings and tiny decks filled with bikes, BBQs and boxes. You walk across this bridge to the Rex’s facade, through two flights of stairs, to a door that leads to the Rex front desk. (It’s in the narrow hall way right across from room #1. It is manned from 8 to 8 only.) The day we arrived, the door was locked with a note stating to call this number and I'll be right over. Not an easy task when you don't have a cell phone, and all the pay phones dont work with Canadian credit cards. Your hotel room overlooks the lovely courtyard?? mentioned earlier.

- Rooms are postage stamp size. Even though we were there for 3 days (mistake) could not unpack the suitcase, because there is really no room to put things. Had to keep it upright and along the wall in order to walk around the bed.

- Bathroom has a sliding louvered door. Once that door is shut, there is not enough room to undress to take a shower. No where to hang your clothes. Cant put them on the W/C because there is no lid, can’t put them on the vanity because it just a sink. You need to get undressed in the bedroom before going into the bathroom to shower. Oh yes, since many of the courtyard windows overlook your room, you have to shut your windows in order not to be seen. Shutting your windows for any length of time, immediately raises the room room temperature by 10 degrees because there is no air conditioning. But they do give you a fan, which needs to run 24/7 to at least maintain the stifling temperature in your room.

- We tried to stay really busy all day sightseeing, trying to delay returning to our room until as late as possible because it wasn’t a happy place to be.

- I could go on and on but I wont. Normally, when on holidays, you are hoping that the days drag on in order to make it last longer. Not with this leg of our trip. We were constantly hoping it would end in order to move on to our next destination.

Not sure how they were given 1 Star, but to me, this place is just one step up from a youth hostel or the seediest hotel in the most run down part of you own home town.

Stay away.

“Hotel Rex--great on a budget!!”

My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Rex in July 2008. We were traveling on a tight budget and chose the hotel based on its location. Location was excellent--walking distance to nightlife, beaches, train station, etc. Room was basic, but clean and safe. The staff were fabulous and extremely helpful, friendly, etc. Definitely worth the price we paid!!

“Prime location, clean rooms & great price!”

Hotel Rex

My boyfriend and I chose this little hotel after reading the reviews on tripadvisor.com and were pleasanlty suprised with the room, location or price. Hotel Rex is small, I think only housing 7 simply decorated rooms and very clean bathrooms. Rooms are small and with only a wooden sliding door to seperate the bathroom to the bedroom, however, it is in the heart of Nice, walking distance to the old quarter (which is a great place to eat and get lost in day or night) and close to supermarkets, shops and cafes. Unexpectedly, on the second last day of our 3 night visit, we arrived back from a day trip to monte carlo to find all our belongings had been moved to a different room with no explanation. A little concerning, but nothing missing. Other than that, was very happy with this hotel for the rate. No breakfast option, no air-con, no bar fridge and no safe. But extremely clean!!!

We stayed at the Hotel Rex for 5 nights having chosen it from Trip Advisor recommendations.
On arrival you are faced with 2 flights of stairs but the staff rushed down to carry our cases for us and again on departure.Any request or query was dealt with efficiently and in a very friendly way.
Our room, though not overly big ,had a comfortable bed, it was serviced well each day and the fan was much appreciated.
Our one concern was the size of the bathroom, even by European standards it was microscopic ,and could pose difficulty for larger guests.
For closeness to all types of transport, nearness to a wide range of eating places and the cost this hotel would be hard to beat.
