“Lovely hotel in Saint Laurent Du Var”

Holiday Inn Resort Nice - Port St Laurent

We have just returned after staying for 7 nights at Holiday Inn in Saint Laurent Du Var. What a fantastic place! The hotel is located just 5 minutes from airport. The hotel has a free shuttle bus to drive you from/to the airport, but remember to give them a call and order it to come. The hotel has a nice reception and the staff is friendly and speaks English very well. The rooms are big and very well equipped. There’s WIFI in the rooms but it’s too expensive – 10 EURO for 1 hour.

It’s a great hotel situated on a beautiful promenade with various restaurants. The beach promenade is very different to the hectic beach in Nice town centre. It’s far more relaxed and cleaner.
The hotel has a private beach and pool area, which is excellent and by the way ideal for families with young children, as it is safe and secure, but remember to say that you stay at Holiday Inn or else you will be charged 17 Euro in entrance fee instead of 7 Euro. In the weekend the pool area is very packed by local residents.

Cap 3000, one of France's biggest shopping centres is only 5 minutes away. We enjoyed the Lafayette Gourmet which is a Gourmet food store.
The rail station is only 10-15 minutes walk away and you can get trains to anywhere along the Cote D'Azur.

We have had that best holiday ever and would recommend the place and the hotel anytime.

“Not fulfilling its potential”

I'll be brief this time, as I've written twice previously regarding this hotel.
Pros: minibus shuttle to and from airport, effective front desk service, swimming pools ideal for families with young children, spacious and clean rooms that can accommodate four- a rare commodity on the Cote d'Azur, flat-screen tv in room, decent bathrooms with separate toilet, balconies facing the Med if you pay for a sea view room, a wonderful barman originally from Turkey (when he's on duty), vast choice of restaurants for eating out within walking distance, safe area for families, peace and tranquility, fantastic shopping within walking distance (Galleries Lafayette and best shopping mall on the Cote d'Azur), relatively cheap parking with plenty of spaces underground at 10euros per night, bus and train connections within walking distance, ideal location as a base for the whole area between Cannes and Menton-on Motorway in 5 mins if need be, decent sun lounges on Cocody Beach, taking breakfast outside in a relaxed atmosphere, meal in hotel restaurant right on the beach (hit or miss-just like the hotel itself), hotel bills are generally correct and altered according to guests' demands.

Cons: young and eager barman from France that closed bar just after 11pm so that he could finish work, breakfast that hasn't changed in 7 years- awful bacon and scrambled egg, tomatoes with herbs that nobody seem to eat, potatoes, only one fruit juice, unable to cope with peak activity (sounds familiar?), lack of servicing tables and clearing used plates, uneven supply of food and replenishing dishes, no distinction (apart from price reduction) between locals and hotel guests on Cocody Beach, guests not made to feel special or valued (barman from Turkey an exception), uninspired seating area in bar, children of hotel guests have to pay pool attendants for pool toys and to play table tennis.
So, in deciding whether this hotel's for you- balance the pros and cons. This year we had an upgrade to a suite (best room in the hotel) -rack rate £300+ per night. We paid £160 for a sea view room without breakfast. The hotel could have a lot going for it. In fact I could make it a thriving establishment, given the right staff and six months to show them what needs to be done.

Spent 10 nights here with my wife. On arrival at Nice airport, first problem was that the Info phone in the terminal did not work, so I had to contact the hotel on my mobile to arrange for their shuttle bus to pick us up. Not the hotel's fault, but the bus was sent to terminal 2 while we waited at terminal 1. After about 40 minutes the bus eventually found us. Check in was smooth, however, and we were allocated a room on the fifth floor, from where you get a really superb view.
It's true that only about half or less of the actual building is the hotel, the rest being private apartments. This means, however, that the property and gardens are kept in very good condition and I had no complaints about the look of the place.
My first impression of breakfast was that it was quite ordinary with, as has been said before, the hot food fairly unattractive, poor in choice and tasteless. There wasn't a great choice of cold food either, and only one type of fruit juice was on offer. So, if you didn't like orange juice, that was too bad.
It seems such a waste of a restaurant that the hotel only serves breakfast there and for the rest of the day it's closed. I'm sure they must be capable of doing even a light lunch menu, though I suspect they must have some agreement with the other eating places in the area that they don't offer this.
Our only major problem was that we had several days of interrupted power to the room with no electricity and no air conditioning. This included two nights when the hotel's only solution was to give us a torch! No offer was made to move us to another room and no compensation was offered for the inconvenience this caused even though we put up with bits of the ceiling being dismantled and the electricity being unreliable for days. It still wasn't resolved when we left.
For this reason I would say that while, in general, the staff were perfectly friendly, reception staff at least, did not seem to want to go that extra yard to make our stay more comfortable.
My overall impression was that the hotel seemed more eager to cater for the corporate events that took place there every day and this left the ordinary guest feeling somewhat of a second-class citizen.
While our stay here was pleasant enough, this particular Holiday Inn simply does not come up to the 4 stars you would expect from the Intercontinental Group. It's not an establishment I would wish to return to.

“Good location, clean rooms.”

Holiday Inn Resort Nice - Port St Laurent

Just got back from nine nights at the Holiday Inn based in St Laurent du Var.

Hotel just what you would expect of a holiday inn - rooms quite large, clean and well equiped.
Maid service good and as soon as anything needed replacing it was done before we even needed to ask - e.g. light bulb went over the shower.
Did not eat in the hotel as there is a wide selection of restaurants nearby.

A great place to eat was Le Paradis Marin - fantastic food and a great menu.

Another restaurant (with green fringed chairs) serves a fantastic Paella (seafood and meat mix).

The location of the hotel is good for restaurants and bars (not as many of these) but it does get busier Thurs-Sat, some nightclubs and late night bars.

The airport is visable from the hotel and if I had been told my room would face the airport and I could see planes starting to take off I would have cancelled my booking. However, it really was not a problem - rooms are sound proofed and it did not affect my opinion of the hotel at all.

Places to go in the local area - Antibes is a beautiful town - we went there by train (the station is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel). Lots of bars and restaurants here, we ate at a fantastic Chinese. Last train back to St Laurent was at 12:15 and takes just 10-15 mins.

Villefranche is also gorgeous with a lovely beach and lots of restaurants on the sea front.

I really enjoyed my holiday here and would return to this area of France again.

“Good location but average hotel”

Holiday Inn Resort Nice - Port St Laurent

I went there with my wife and two kids (4 and 2) in June 2007 because the hotel is near the airport and by the sea. We did not want to hire a car and preferred to travel by train and bus. Free shuttle is handy but you must call them using the phones in the terminal. The hotel itself is deceptively small. From the photos one would expect the hotel to have hundreds of rooms but it occupies only a tiny portion of the complex, the rest being used as commercial units and private apartments. The room was comfortable and clean but the air conditioning unit could use with an upgrade. Breakfast was ok but the hot food was average. The bacon rashers and omelettes were not very appetising so we stuck mainly to the fruit, pastries and toast. The service was very good. The restaurant is used only for breakfast so if you want to eat in rather than out you are stuck with room service (limited choice and high prices). This is understandable in a way as there are loads of restaurants on the beachfront. Hotel staff were friendly but not overtly helpful – they did not go the extra mile for the customer. The hotel receptionist gave me the wrong phone number for the airport and when I informed her of this she protested that it was the only number she had. Any customer-oriented staff would have said “sorry sir, I will get you the right number”. But that’s down to management. In the end, I had to ask her for the phone number of the operator who gave me the correct number. Another time, I asked the evening manager for some teabags. He looked puzzled and said he did not have any but I insisted that there were some in the backroom as I had been given some a couple of days before. I persisted and he eventually found some - reluctantly. In short, whenever I asked the staff for something I often felt that I was bothering them. The swimming pools are not part of the complex, although you would think so from the photos. As another reviewer said, hotels guests pay 7 euros per adult per day. We did not like this formula at all as 1) you had to pay a daily fee which sucks and 2) the pools tended to be full of people not staying at the hotel. There was also little or no security in the pool, the lifeguards usually being too busy chatting to their buddies with the result that people were using the pools without paying and you had teenagers taking over the kiddies pool and frightening young children. As for restaurants, they all serve pretty much the same things – fish, pizzas, pasta – simple food such as mashed potatoes, carrots and chicken would have been nice for the kids. I often say to my wife that if we opened a restaurant on that boardwalk, we’d be making a fortune catering for families (loads of people were in the same situation). There is a shopping centre nearby, which was handy. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. I don’t think this was value for money. At least we made the most of it and the weather was great but we won’t go back.
