We found Villa St. Maxime via TripAdvisor after learning that we had two extra days in Nice. We were fortunate to be traveling in the "quiet" season because we had no difficulty getting a room. We were excited to arrive, and hoped that our experience would live up to all of the fabulous reviews.
Well, my first impression was that the lovely photos I had seen on the Web site can only begin to do this place justice - the villa is much nicer, if that is possible. The golden Cote d'Azure sun bathes the interior walls in warm light and I was constantly drawn to the windows, balconies and terrace to let my eyes rest on the undulating hills that fall down to the shimmering sea. Off to the left rises the historic walled city of St. Paul de Vence, which serves as a special canvas for changing hues of the rising and setting sun. Palm trees wave in the breeze, and my brain keept checking with my eyes to make sure I wasn't imagining what I was seeing. It is that good.
The fabulous setting is outclassed only by owners Ann and John. American expats whose great taste is reflected in an impeccable selection of contemporary art and antiques, they are warm hosts whose company we looked forward to throughout our stay. Several times we found ourselves torn between great conversation with them and the call of unexplored towns and shops. Finally climbing into the car for sightseeing, shopping or dinner, we were always armed with great recommendations, directions and advice.
We stayed in the Maxime Suite and loved it. After having previously stayed for several days in a cramped hotel room in Nice, we were thrilled with the ability to have some extra space in the split-level adjoining areas of the suite. The lower level has a balcony with retractable sliding doors that extend the living room into an open air retreat; the "upstairs" is a king-sized bedroom with an adjoining massive bathroom with double sinks, double tub, six-headed shower and heated towels. The view from the suite's balcony is probably the best of the villa. My husband was delighted to discover that the lighthouse from the Cap d'Antibes, some 15 km distant, casts a faint pulse of light on the bedroom wall at night.
I know other reviews have mentioned this, but perhaps the nicest touch is the thoughtul way that John and Ann always have just the right offer of drinks, coffee or wine before dinner. A 'digestif' cart awaits you as you return from dinner - with liqueurs and bottles of water to cap off your evening. And a leisurely breakfast in the sun on the veranda is sooo good.
We left relaxed and rejuvinated.
Is it possible to be "homesick" for a place where you spent only a couple days? I know we are already looking forward to returning. My husband jokingly asked if I am writing a bad review - so this "hidden gem" stays hidden a little longer...but we appreciated Ann and John so much we couldn't bear to do anything but tell the glowing, raving, happy truth.
We envy you your stay there. When you go, say hello for Tom and Julia!
