“Over rated restaurant, poor hotel, lovely location”

Oustau de Baumaniere

Aug 6, 2008

The room and grounds were pleasant (but a mile away from the main restaurant and hotel reception - you need to drive between the two!), and in fact right next door to Cabro D’or (the buildings are spread out around the town, not really an ‘estate’ as they claim to be, as there are other hotels and buildings in between). A very cheap, old and sagging mattress on our bed meant not a great nights sleep. But it was quiet and peaceful. Not great value for EURO 320 a night (without breakfast)

Dinner on our first night was amazingly expensive. More than EURO 200 per person for the food alone (3 courses, and not much food!). And not very special. Compared to other two michelin star restaurants this one is not that great. Lunch at the Cabro D'Or was much better (despite only having one michelin star) and better value for money at around EURO 100 (2 people, 3 courses, with wine). But be warned … you need to book and you can only get a table from 12.30-1.30!!! Even though it was empty and we were staying in the hotel we were turned away from lunch at 1.50pm. Really rude! Room and pool service averaged out at EURO 150 for two (without wine - just a couple of salads and a shared dessert)! Really, they need to get some perspective. They are a hotel with a couple of OK restaurants. But they seem to think they are really very very special. The menu at the hotel says they have the best dessert chef in France, and they are very good. But the rest is pretty mediocre. I have no idea how they can charge what they charge (a one egg starter, on some salad, EURO 56 ... and that was the cheapest appetiser you could buy!!!!!)

The best thing about the hotel is the location. Breathtaking countryside and stunning village.

Service in the hotel was patchy. Mostly pleasant staff, but some are awful! When we arrived at 4pm (after a long journey) we struggled to get anything to eat. You would imagine a 5 star R&C hotel to be able to have some kind of room/pool service available. The hotel staff were not very helpful on this first instance, despite my wife being 5 months pregnant and with low blood sugar. They could only find cheese and fois gras to feed us (neither recommended if you are pregnant) and a few olives. They seemed amazed that you would need to eat in the afternoon (we had missed lunch, not a french thing to do clearly) and were pretty strict that you must fast from 3pm until 7.30pm! Not a great first impression. Luckily the service improved a bit. But overall we we would not recommend it.

“True romantic and luxury experience”

Oustau de Baumaniere

5 of 5 stars
Paris, France
Jul 19, 2008

We had organized a family reunion there (wedding) of around 20 people and were thrilled at the idea of spending time. At the end of the week-end, we had enjoyed a true unique time and timeless experience that "outperformed" our expectations. Both the location, the rooms and private house we had booked (La Guigou) and above all the gourmet meal we had on sunday in the magical and almost "religious" restaurant, were oustanding.
We felt like owning a Provencal Mas with a beautifull garden, even in the fall, and had a great breakfast on the terrace right in front of Les Baux.
Very professional, considerate and discreet staff.

“Great place marred by poor reception”

Oustau de Baumaniere

4 of 5 stars
San Francisco, CA
Jul 16, 2008

All was great here until checkout, when the desk staff first insisted on charging me for a package I had already paid for in advance, and then insisted on adding breakfast charges that the payment had already covered. After I dug out the emails and produced the web-based itinerary, they finally relented. The attitude that the customer is wrong is characteristic in some European businesses, but it was a disappointment to encounter it here and surprising that the reception staff seemed completely unaware of the pricing and marketing offered on the website. It was an unpleasant 45 minute end to an otherwise terrific stay.

Travelers should also be aware that the hotel has two sites, one around the main restaurant, and another one down the road in a converted manor house. This second site is by no means inferior, but it is some distance from the main restaurant so after dinner there you have to make your way back by car or on foot. Some hotel materials referred to a lovely path, but staff seemed unaware of this and pointed us toward the main road. It would be nice of the hotel to offer a shuttle service, but no mention was made of that.

The additional charges to use the new spa are very steep, even by European standards.

“Not Bad- Wonderful!”

Oustau de Baumaniere

Jan 29, 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

I was online today and I have to say - very confused about the reviews that I saw. I have stayed at Oustau this summer and the food was amazing, the rooms spectacular and the staff a joy.

Perhaps people are expecting a Marriott type of clean and shiny hotel where everything is the same and you know what you will be getting when you book. Oustau reflects the charm of its spectacular location with its pool, it rooms (some even have fireplaces big enough to walk into) and its AMAZING restaurant.

When I was there last, it was the beginning of fall and the poolside was beginning to wane and the countryside was getting quieter, as the tourists had left. Nevertheless, the restaurant menu had been changed to a more fall-focused offerings and everything was so scrumptious that I had to hold myself back from licking the plate. We were there for five nights and although we had planned to eat in the restaurant only one of those nights, ended up eating 3 times.

Lunch was great too. One of the days was uncommonly hot, and we asked the waiter if the chef could make us a salad (as there wasn't one on the menu that worked for us). What came out can only be called perfection in salads. There were fresh tomatoes, prosciutto and artichokes. It was what I would have eaten at home but presented and flavored in a way that would be hard to mimic.

I think that the charm of Oustau is that they are not trying to hard to be perfect. It has a homey approachable feel and yet it is still a top quality hotel with top quality services and amenities.

I also want to mention that for the first time ever, I tried the new spa on their secondary property. I got a manicure and a pedicure, which (even with my daily flip flop wear and tear) lasted for over a month! What a wonderful investment.

On our last night, the chef, Sylvestre made sure that we had everything to our liking. This special touch from one of my favorite hotels in the world was the cherry on top of a perfect stay. You have to admit that there are not that many 2 star Michelin restaurants where the chef is so invested that he cares what each of his diners think,

I don't just recommend this hotel - I swear by it! I would send anyone I knew to it in complete confidence that they would have the type of experience that I did.

Truly a gem.

“Amazingly Comforting”

Oustau de Baumaniere

4 of 5 stars
Suresnes, France

My previous stay at legendary Oustau de Baumaniere was back 8 years ago. My partner and I are just back from a 2-night cebration stay.

Reading some of the previous reviews, I wondered if they all regarded the same place.

Travelling in luxury hotels is my thing. This place is certainly not the most modern, the most luxurious, the hippest, the coolest, the hottest, the grandest, the remotest. Neither it is the best appointed, the most staffed, the best featured. However, it is one of those where I feel SO lucky to stay, where the scenery is so pretty, that I just feel wonderful and relaxed. Enjoying the minute.

First of all, the main buildings dates back from the 16C. Second, it has been operated by the same family since the early 50s. It improved, expanded, got modernized on a regular basis. This is just to explain that no two rooms are alike, and no business feature should be expected.
Once this said, all famous (really famous) people, not wannabees, have flocked to Baumaniere for the last 50+ years, and they loved it. Here, this is old-world money ; there is no one to be impressed by too much, too young money, if I can make this point.

SETTINGS : At the bottom of Val d'Enfer canyon, it is only a 5 minute walk to the old village of Les Baux. A steep walk, though ! Beautiful view over the village, up left, and Val d'Enfer down towards Arles. All rooms must have a nice view. Beautifully manicured grounds and gardens, included the car park, concealed behind the shop. Fairly large swimming pool, not heated in winter.

ROOM : we were staying in room 4, in the main building. Nice decor, with french windows opening onto a pretty large private terrace, with loungers, chairs, and a table. Surronded by the old village of Les Baux, sweeping view over the rocks and bushes of Val d'Enfer. Design of the room updated, aiming to the scenery outside. Old tiles on the floor. Decent amenities included ample storage and LCD TV set. Clear downfall however was the bathroom : although everything was perfectly working, the style was 20-year-old, and cheap. Separate toilet and Porthault bathrobe far from making it up. Rate was 270 euros. Not cheap by any standards, not a rip-off, expecting all the above. Spring and summer are 30% more expensive.
We visited room 7, at the other end of the same building : 20% more expensive, 100% better although the terrace a less than half the size of #4's, with a really breathtaking bathroom. We have booked it for for next stay in august.

BREAKFAST : we ordered room service. A continental fare, billed 21 euros. Homemade breads and croissants are extremely good. Yogurt, fruits, and freshly squeezed orange juice. They refill whatever you request.

CHECK-IN/OUT : smooth and quick. They request a deposit of 50% of the stay at reservation, which is quite rare in France.

SERVICE : smiling. Dedicated. Not always overly efficient. My request for a DVD player could not be met on the first night. Although I gave them a reminder the next morning, it was not there in late afternoon, and it tool a whime to get it - at last.
I wanted to order a cake from the restaurant to take away for a New Year dinner. They prepared an amazingly tasty chocolate only cake, that they prepared in a bow with ice for travelling, at a fairly reasonnable price.

RESTAURANT : the place is actually a restaurant with rooms available. It has been famous for decades. Featuring 3 Michelin stars for 30 years, it has only 2 since 1989. I have been to most of 3-Michelin-star restaurants in France, and many in Europe.
I must honestly say that we enjoyed a very, very good dinner. Not up to Ducasse, for sure. Just damn good. The signature crust leg of lamb being not my liking, they obliged and prepared it in a slightly different way. Starter of egg and truffle was amazing. Pre-starter of leek-foie gras-truffle ravioli was just out of this world, and left is speechless.
Mind the previous reviewer, the guy with a chef outfit who can be seen in the dining room is the owner, not the chef. He used to be the chef, but he hired one some years ago.
Service is caring and smiling and helpful. No attitude here. Not stuffy. They want you to spend a nice time.
Talking of spending, the place is really expensive. Dinner for 2 with 2 glasses of Prestige champagne, half a bottle of reasonable wine set us 440 euros, and that was not with the most expensive fares. You sure pay for the ingredients (truffle, foie gras), the service, and the place. We felt it was expensive, not a rip-off.

OTHERS : they have a shop. Now, that is a big joke. It is not a signature shop. More like a designer shop, unrelated to the hotel and what you find in it. What is the point of buying here things that can be found everywhere (Bed Bath Beyond) at a fraction of the price ? None in my opinion. On top of it, it is horrendously expensive. Who wants to pay a ridiculous $330 for a bathrobe, $150 for an electric pepermill, and $50 for a lavender sachet ?

You'll understand I love the place. Nowhere close to a bargain, I think I get my money worth. And I can't wait t return and enjoy it another time.
