We were seeking a place to stay that would enable us to have quiet time and also have sufficient proximity to some places of note to enable us to be 'tourists' as well. The staff at the hotel were most helpful in recommending restaurants and cafes in St-Remy-de-Provence, and also tried to find a cooking course but we had left organising that too late. The restaurants that they recommended were excellent.
The breakfasts were good - with local fruit and yoghurt.
The location is excellent - being only one street away from the main village. Parking is complex in these small villages and driving on the 'wrong' side of the road is a challenge. The fact that we could just walk to the local restaurants of our choice, the post office and other shops, such as the wonderful organic fruit shop, added to our sense of relaxation.
The rooms that surround the back garden are more expensive (I think) than those that are along the side entrance. Having a veranda to sit out on in the evenings was great, but I am not sure of the price differential. The garden was beautiful with ancient fig trees from another era and wonderful climbing roses.
Staying in St-Remy-de-Provence was good insomuch as there are places around that are great to see, with a wonderful emphasis on Van Gogh and his time spent there. Seeing the views that he saw and recalling the resultant paintings made our time there very special.
St-Remy-de-Provence is surrounded by many olive groves and we thoroughly enjoyed tasting the various olive oils and the vinegars.
The only improvement at the hotel that I could identify would be to have wireless access to the internet in the rooms. The only place that wireless was available was in the office area, although it is noted that there was a computer for communal use provided for guests. However, some guests would benefit from access in or around their rooms, enabling work to continue (while on holiday!). Perhaps this would be the need of only a few people, but I did note while we were there that there were about 5 guests who regularly sought to use the computer.
A hire car is necessary if you are to maximise to region and at least 5 or 6 days would be the minimum to enjoy the village and surrounds. There is a wonderful organic fruit shop and a weekly produce market, and a huge supermarket - all worth a visit. There are no gluten free biscuits/bread, so if you want such items, then you should bring them with you.
I would certainly recommend this hotel to others, but would suggest that they check the various prices for different rooms and determine whether they would want their own veranda or not.
