It was like visiting the warm and welcoming country home of your artist friends. The property has a cozy, understated sophistication- it is neither overly-designed (though the hand of an architect and landscape architect shows in parts) nor too chintzy or thematically "provencal".
We'd reserved a mid-sized room but asked to see any other available rooms when we arrived. We were shown one in the largest category and took it. An unbelievable STEAL at 112 Euros.
Tall hedges provide privacy for the spacious terrace. We had dinner there on one of our evenings in, complete with wine bought from an area vineyard and plates, utensils and candle lanterns borrowed from the hotel. The bathroom with double sinks, separate WC, and shower/tub was all newly renovated with windows overhead and ample overhead light and side sconces by the mirror. They also offered really, really wonderful organic bath and beauty products. The rooms do not front any busy streets but it has around-the-corner proximity to the centre-ville which proved very convenient.
The room was on the dark side. French doors offer the only light and with the lush landscaping and of course, the fig trees, it's just not quite enough. Typical of construction in this area you have thick masonry walls that add to that "heavy" feel. At any rate, the room was immaculate and housekeeping, efficient and conscientious. The interior is complete with real plasterwork with all the texture that so many try to accomplish with faux painting techniques on drywall. It is not overly-furnished, but it has all you'll need. (Well, unless you need a refrigerator or a television. If you have baby formula, medication etc, I wonder if they wouldn't be able to provide one if requested?)
Everyone we encountered at Sous Les Figuiers was wonderful, not just professional-though they were at that-but genuinely friendly and helpful. This was true of so many we encountered in St. Remy. The Wednesday market there is terrific-pick up some picnic items and after lugging home the handmade blankets, pottery and crepe-spreading rake-thingy you couldn't live without, borrow some utensils and such from Figuiers and head out onto the Van Gogh Trail and continue up into the Alpilles without ever even bringing the car out of the ample (by provence standards) Figuiers lot-fantastic!
We never tried the pool nor reserved breakfast, so can't comment.
I'd spent a university year in Aix a decade ago and this was my first time back in that long. St. Remy and Figuiers gave my husband his first taste of Provence and me my first warm welcome back to the region. We have paid so much more for hotels that have offered so much less (Le Prieure in Villeneuve-les-Avignon comes immediately to mind). The hotel is not top-down perfect in every single way but we weren't disappointed. Quite the contrary, a comfortable backdrop for our visit, it's many assets as well as it's unique charm became an invaluable element in the making of so many happy memories of our time in town.
