“average hotel at good location”

Best Western Hotel Carlton

Jul 1, 2008

I stayed one night with my wife and two small children in this hotel. This hotel is really average as there are some smallish problems but also some positive points (e.g. large bathroom).

I rate it better than average because of its excellent location. It is in between the old center (5-10 minutes walking to the lake) and the railway station, easy to reach from the highway (across the post office).

The problems are the old early eighties style of the standard room we were staying in (the superior rooms are more modern). The room was not worn or so, just its style did not fit my taste. One problem related to this were the brownish tiles on the floor of the big bathroom, it was impossible to judge whether the floor would be clear.
When we checked in we were not treated overly friendly. I asked for a non-smoking room, which I did not get because the maid had supposedly gone. When the extra bed we had asked for was also missing, I requested another room. I did get a non smoking room but only having answered whether the other room did really, really smell (it did). The maid had put the bed in before I managed to use the elevator up to the third floor. This elevator may appear a problem if the hotel is busy and you are on a high floor. It is dead slow, and only fits two people.

Luckily the rest of the staff were fine, it had good parking, as said its location is excellent, and the room rate was acceptable. In particular if you take a superior room, you will have a good stay.

“Convenient”

Best Western Hotel Carlton

3 of 5 stars
Zurich, Switzerland
Apr 7, 2008

We stayed here for a stop over during our trip back home from Italy to Zurich and booked on the spot via telephone two superiour rooms.
We had #106, a large coner room with twin beds facing the street with a double door towards the hall-way, and #100, a newly renovated but small room with king bed facing the back yard. The bathroom was large, i.e. nearly as large as the room was. (98 € plus 14 € for breakfast)
Reception staff was kind and gave us a choice of rooms. They also recommended their own (sheltered and locked up) garage, which even was 9 € only (the public garage is 12 € which is next door, too).
We had a night cap at the hotel bar which was operated by the night receptionist. Breakfast next morning was nothing special and had a slow, slow service.
Would I stay again? Yes, but those hotels in the centre of the old town might be an option for a different experience.

“Convenient location within walking distance”

Best Western Hotel Carlton

3 of 5 stars
Basel, Switzerland
Apr 1, 2008

We spent 2 nights over Easter weekend in Annecy at this hotel.
It is very convenient to the train station, visible across the square from our balcony. The location is only a 10 minute walk from the old part of town with the restaurants and canals. The room and bathroom were clean and in good condition. We were in room #605 which had a balcony. The room, although a triple, was laid out in such a manner that there was not much extra space. Reception was helpful with dining recommendations and let us use the breakfast room for card games when the snowfall got heavy outdoors. Parking is in the hotel garage but getting there is a tight fit, although the spaces were roomy. I might mention a few complaints about the plumbing: the wall mounted shower head (there are 2) sprayed out as if the nozzle needed cleaning. Our friends' room had a shower control knob that could barely be turned and, probably because it was a holiday, was not fixed, although reported, during our stay. Also, the hair dryer hose was old and deteriorating so that much of the hot air leaked out before the hose end. Minor issues that did not much affect our stay. We booked on-line at the Best Western website and paid 120 Euros which seemed like a good value.

“too old”

Best Western Hotel Carlton

Mar 27, 2008

I've been to Annecy several times, and always had to stay in this hotel (as our company booked it for us every time). What can i say? it has a wonderful location (just in the centre, opposite the railway station), but it's an old fashioned hotel with the old furniture and bath. The rest is more or less fine.

“wonderful experience”

Best Western Hotel Carlton

The location of this hotel was very good for both the station, the town and the lake.
We went with French Travel service and you do tend to get a better service with them e.g. the best rooms for the price that you pay. We had a very spacious, clean and comfortable room, with a large balcony, giving views of the distant mountains. The bathroom was also very spacious.
Breakfast was good, but the staff did struggle to replenish items when numbers of guests overwhelmed them..
The bar had a limited stock, but was fine for our needs.
The staff were all very friendly and recommended restaurants on request.
Our air-conditioning broke down, but was repaired very quickly on request.
I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the beautiful town of Annecy.
