“The perfect city experience base”

Stayed in 2x2-bed apartment with wife, bro and sis-in-law for 10-day trip to Rugby World Cup.

Come the end of the trip we all agreed the apartment was spot-on.

Was a bit worried by an earlier posting complaining about fleas, but we found the flat to be very clean, superbly equipped and best of all, the location, amounted to perfection. Other people we spoke to also loved their apartment.

The only downside was first arrival by car. Finding the car park is impossible (and I mean that) unless you pull up close by on the street and speak to reception. They will give you a very good hand-drawn A4 map, plus access key. The car park is six storeys down and fully secure - 100 per cent vital in this frenetic, crowded, but exhilarating city.

The staff we met all spoke English and all always helpful.

As for the flat, it was clean, airy and practical. Unlike a lot of these types of places, it was even comfortable and homely once we'd settled in. The kitchen was clean, modern and had one of those cool "grill" microwaves for a quick pizza!

The location, if it's the Lyon sight-seeing and gastronomic experience you want, is unrivalled. Place Terreux is a few blocks north, Place Republique on the doorstep, Place Bellecour just to the south. Over a footbridge takes you to the fascinating alleys and 'bouchon' restaurants of Old (Vieux) Lyon.

Lyon is not an obvious tourist city like Paris, Barcelona or Rome, but believe me, if you like a bit of history, amazing eating and drinking of Beaujolais or Rhone wines, plus some impressive Gallo-Roman sights and some excellent shopping, you'll love the place.

By the way, the foyer at Citadines has very tasty coffee, a big screen TV and internet access. Brilliant !!

We've decided to stay with Citadines again in other cities.

This location offers studio and one bedroom appartments. The location is great. There are a number of restaurants near the hotel and you are around the corner from a bridge to Vieux Lyon. The only downside is the lack of AC. It was warm during our stay and with the windows open it was quite noisy at night. While there was some advantage to a studio over a hotel room it doesn't offer much extra space. If you have an option, request a room on the courtyard side as it would cut down on the noise.

“Best location!”

For a good value and a great location, the Citadines can not be beat. We've just returned from 4 nights there with our 4 children (all under 7 years). We paid 107 Euro for a 1 bedroom apartment-- which is an excellent rate, although I found out later that we could have gotten the same apartment for just 85 Euro had we booked through the tourist office-- so try that first!
The location was perfection; good (child-friendly) bouchons were literally at our doorstep, shops were around every corner and Place de la Bellcour, one of Lyon's largest and most vibrant squares was just a few blocks away. Plus, the outdoor market, which is a fantastic sight, even if you don't buy anything, is also just around the corner. We all easily walked to the Old Town (just over the river), too.
The property itself is basic and clean. If you are planning on eating anything there, wash the dishes and cutlery when you get in your apartment (ours had been previously used and not washed). Don't pay for the breakfast-- it's 8 Euro per person and very modest. There are boulangeries close by with better breads at 1/4 the cost.
Overall, the Citadines is an excellent place if you are fairly self-sufficient. If you are looking for all the bells and whistles of a luxury hotel, look elsewhere, but you will pay.

“Hot Hot Hot”

Citadines Lyon Presqu'ile

We visited Lyon in June 2003 for the Confederations Cup football, and the Presqu'ile Citadines proved to be in a great location for exploring this fascinating city.

The summer of 2003 will obviously go down in History for the extreme heat, but it is ridiculous in this day and age that a hotel like this does not have air-conditioning. We got through about 4 litres of water a day - each - in absolutely stifling conditions.

The bathroom had no external window or ventilation and was an ordeal.
There was no option but to keep the apartment windows open permanently - the entertainment value of French street culture wanes after about 2am.

However, things were not all bad. The staff were excellent and most helpful with directions, local information, and most importantly an electric fan for the room (though we could have used six).

The surrounding streets are full of great shops, restaurants and bars, and the French still have a great public transport system (when not on strike).

I would recommend anyone to pay the extra and take a 1-bed apartment rather than the studios, although the sofa-bed was one of the most comfortable we have come across, and our impressions of room size may not have been helped by the heat. As seems to be common with "Aparthotels", the kitchen surfaces and utensils could have been cleaner.

We certainly did no cooking, but this kind of accommodation is ideal to come back to with the morning croissants or lunchtime sandwiches.
