We have spent a considerable amount of time in Europe and most of it has been in small, upscale inns that we've ferreted out from the huge numbers available--usually very much to our satisfaction. Gasthaus Hackteufel, though not what we'd consider to be "upscale," offered a great location, a restaurant with a reputation, and very attentive pre-arrival e-mail communications. Upon arriving (don't let the narrow, pedestrian-laden street/passage turn you off) we found the staff to be the equal of the more expensive places we've enjoyed. Everyone was well-trained, spoke perfect English, and anxious to help in any way possible--including giving us excellent directions to the public car park a few, very short blocks away. And you'll need to move your car ASAP, as there's no way another sizable vehicle can negotiate the lane with you parked there! The non-smoking room was HUGE, with a brand new bathroom that was equal to anything we have at home. Cleanliness, nice bedding, even (silk) flowers in the room announced loudly that these folks take pride in their innkeeping. We'd recommend Hackteufel to anyone visiting in the Heidelberg area. Walk to everything, and then some.
