I recently spent 5 nights in the Hotel Hackteufel, in the center of old Heidelberg, and had a very enjoyable stay. It's a well-run small hotel with up-to-date, tastefully renovated rooms. (I stayed in the top floor room, #12, which was spacious with sloping open-beam ceilings, skylights, and a view of the castle and rooftops of Heidelberg. Room #8 is also interesting--a suite with its own little patio on the next-to-top floor. Some rooms that face the street might be noisy at night when the street is thronging with people, if you are early to retire.) The staff was friendly and helpful to me, and I don’t speak a word of German. The location is great--literally a stone's throw from the old bridge--right in the middle of the popular block between the bridge and the central plaza next to the Heiliggeistkirche. The restaurant is also excellent and is popular with local residents--try the game-stuffed large ravioli, the best dish I had anywhere during my stay in Heidelberg. A good brewhouse is next door, and many other restaurants are nearby. (The Goldener Hecht across the street dates to 1717 and is mentioned by Goethe.) Best of all, they have a new wireless LAN which worked fine with my laptop (3 euros for 30 min., 5 euros for 60 min.) ----
