“Great Place to Stay”

Flair Wortz Zur Weinsteige

Do you like "traditional" Hotels? Don't like Corporate Hotels? Well this one's for you!
Our son is on a University work placement in Stuttgart so we decided to visit him over Easter. I contacted a German colleague who recommended the Wortz to me. I rang and spoke direct with the Hotel, confirming prices and dates, their English was excellent.
Don't be fooled by the outside appearance of the Hotel or it's positioning in relation to S/U Bahn tracks. We had a room at the front and were never troubled by any noise from traffic or trams. We arrived late and were greeted by the owner, again good English. First impressions are "wow" fantastic carved ceiling in reception and like stepping into an old world building. Ok it's all mock historic architecture inside, but hey I told my colleague I wanted a hotel with character and we got what we wanted.
It was a bit of magical mystery tour to our room, up winding stairs and through doors off corridors, but we weren't disappointed when we got to the room. We asked for a three bedded room (two adults and 14year-old) and were greeted by a large twin bedded room with a substantial occasional bed. Yes the room was dated and rather eclectic with very '60's floral carpet and huge dark oak wardrobe, but that added considerable charm.
Large, clean bathroom and a entry vestibule into the room all add to a comfortable bolt hole whilst we were in Stuttgart.
Breakfast was excellent, a choice of typical German/Continental fare plus eggs cooked to order. The restaurant , like the reception, had beautifully carved wood panels and stained glass windows.Even the meat/cheese cooler trolley had carved panels!
We ate in the Hotel one evening, a good and not so good experience. Firstly the menu was typical of the area with lots of local dishes. The meal itself very well cooked and presented. I don't know if we chose a busy evening or if there were problems in the kitchen, but we had to wait about an hour between the starter and main course. If you speak little German just ask the MD to translate, he was great and very helpful. As for the wine list, you're talking telephone directory! In my job I travel abroad and eat out quite a lot, but I've never been confronted by such a wine list, even in Paris! So I just asked for the MD's recommendation, saying we wanted something reasonable but not expensive. The €24 local white was excellent!
Could say a lot more, but suffice to say we'd book again.
As to Stuttgart; like the rest of Germany, great public transport, buy your ticket/pass from the hotel.Do go to the Mercedes museum even if you're not a car buff, it's a good social history museum as well as the cars.Aim to arrive there early as it gets busy. Shopping is good, but we struggled to find restaurants which were open over the Easter holidays.

“A carpenter's dream...”

I'm a little surprized of the last review, but it just goes to show how two people can have totally different opinions on the same place. The only bad things I can say is that the decor has probably not been updated since the 70's, and there is not an elevator (we stayed on the 4th floor). As far as the goods go...all the colums, ceilings, interior doors, counters, etc were hand carved wood. The detail work was incredible! The staff was so attentive both at breakfast and at dinner. Our room faced the street, but the sound-proof windows made it completely quiet at night. Our bathroom was floor to ceiling marble with two sinks. We went with another couple who stayed in the back building, so they had their own patio and view of the koi pond. It's a 10 min walk downhill to the city center, and we took the subway/train back to the hotel each time we went exploring. We had dinner at the hotel the last night we were there. The dinner was very pricey, but all four of us agreed that the food and the recommended choice of wine were unbeatable. If you want a hotel full of ammenities, then this isn't the choice for you, but if you looking for something to give you the feel of Germany, and a helpful staff, then I would highly recommend the Flair Wortz Hotel.
By the way...the Mercedes Museum was a wonderful experience.

“Disappointing”

Flair Wortz Zur Weinsteige

Nov 24, 2007

The parking facilities (garage) were full of garbage and cost 7 Euros per night (nobody announced it in advance).
The hotel room is ready to be renovated and the windows did not close tightly, the interior is made without a lovely hand.
The street makes noise the whole night.

But the breakfast was wonderful!

All together it is too expensive!

“Fine hotel”

Flair Wortz Zur Weinsteige

Nov 20, 2007

The hotel is very beautiful and warm welcoming.
The staff was just fine.
The room which was facing the street was noisy, so perhaps a back room would be a better choice.
Location is about 10 minutes walk from the main square. A tram station is just around the corner.

There are few hotels that have the kind of hospitality found at the "Flair." To say it offers personal service is an understatement. You will want to hug the proprieters every time you pass the desk.
As for the hotel itself, it is situated right on the main road coming down into Stuttgart, and it exudes the old world it has stood upon since its creation.

In the front building, you will find ancient, gorgeous woodwork, inlayed throughout... though you may find the rooms a wee bit stifling, as they're sealed against the noise of the passing traffic, and you will find the insulation from your neighbors a bit lacking, as you hear them through the walls in the WC.
In the rear building, the rooms are well-appointed, but they lack the history of the front.

The restaurant was not open for dinner during my stay, but the breakfast was more than adequate. This is not an upscale hotel. It is not a business hotel. It is, however, a unique experience, and a trip back in time well worth taking.
