Tucked away about a kilometer from Berchtesgaden the hotel is not easy to find but once you've found it it's in a pleasant location with views of the mountains and Eagle's Nest. The downside is that it's a bit of a walk from Berchtesgaden if you've walked there (downhill) to have dinner.
We found the staff friendly and helpful and there are plenty of pretty walks right on the doorstep.
Smoking is strenuously discouraged by notices which may antagonise smokers and breakfast was the usual substantial meal served in German hotels.
Our main complaint was the evening meal (which, to be fair, the owner warned us about). Unless you are familiar with and enjoy Bavarian country food don’t reserve evening meal - thin soup, lots of sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, sausages. But there are numerous restaurants in Berchtesgaden and we will certainly stay at the Rosenbichl if we visit the area again
